Humbug is just a perfect album in my eyes, and I think they really finessed their sound in that era. I always refer to it when recommending to new fans.

  • Perfect album. Absolutely no fat to trim off it. Coupled with some great B-sides, it was just all in all a great era.

  • Tranquility base. Hotel + casino. Mark speaking, please tell me how may I direct your call? 📞

  • and ur right. its easily a no-skip album

  • Humbug was the album in which they realized that they had to evolve their sound, wpsiatwin and fwn are incredible but very similar to each other, Humbug came to break that sound to continue evolving, Even the following albums sound different.

  • I don't quite get why people don't choose AM as the best album, maybe a little mainstream but I think the quality there makes a solid list of unskippable songs that I haven't felt in their other albums

I think people are scared to say it’s their best because of the mainstream-ness. But I always argue that it went mainstream for a reason. Because it had banger after banger haha. I love that album as well, but I still think it’s not their best.

  • I personally think TBH+C is the best since I'm really into sci-fi/story albums. Humbug is amazing though

  • It’s not humbug obviously, it’s Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino 😈 (all time favorite album).

  • Cornerstone is the best off of humbug

  • What does humbug mean?

A humbug is a hard kind of candy, sort of like a lollypop without the stick. I think it refers to how hard or tough life is, something that’s reflected in the album itself: there’s a lot of dark themes

Also popularized by Ebenezer Scrooge’s frustrated exclamation, “Bah Humbug.” Charles Dickens used it as a way to show Scrooge’s disdain and dismissal of merriment.

Humbug itself is an old term for something that’s a hoax, false, or deceptive.

I always took it to mean grumpiness/moodiness but I have heard of the candy too

It's the name of their third album and I thought it was just nonsense but it's meant to mean like imposter apparently

  • existit ergo est.

  • As third albums go. This has got to be up there with the best. I always find myself going to Tranquility Base, maybe it’s because at the time I was trying to find my dark side I don’t know. But I always feel like Potion Approaching was the best song from Humbug, fuck me take me back to hearing that song for the first time again.

  • Well, I’m so in love with every and all of them albums I can’t choose the winner atm. But I can remember last september with Humbug being my favourite. Ouch.

  • Fwn and TBHC are their best albums imo. Humbug is their worst

I agree the first two you mentioned are their best albums, but I think suck it and see is BY FAR their worst album. I don’t think Humbug is bad, I’d put it at a solid 3/4th place.

No I do 100% agree! Humbug is a great album, but just their… least best XD

Wondering what makes you think Sias is SUCH a bad album? I don’t rate it high personally but songs like Hellcat and That’s where you’re wrong are proper bangers imo.

Honestly, I’ve gone on 500 word rants trying to justify/explain it. I think the most concise way to put it though, is I just don’t like the genre that suck it and see is in. I much prefer the near-grunge ascetic of Humbug over the alt-pop vibe of suck it and see. I still don’t think it’s a bad album, I think it’s actually a pretty good album for the genre it’s in. I just don’t really like that genre of alt music, or maybe I’m just picky about it, either way, I prefer their other albums quite a bit more.

You'll go back to Humbug when you're older and understand why people love it.

That could be true. I am only 17 but I have been listening to am for 6 years now.

I don’t hate humbug at all and I can definitely understand why people love it. It’s just their album that I enjoy the least
