Artists see that their product may not be as good as other artists, so they may be discouraged to do something (ie worrying someone else’s cake is better than theirs)

However, the consumer sees two cakes/products and is excited because holy shit two cakes!

Let's say that you are planning to give a $10 gift to your friend, but before buying, you are told that one of his other friends is going to gift him something worth $100.

You may think: “Why should I even bother gifting him something so cheap, when he is already going to be gifted something quite nice?”, and you may decide to not gift him anything. Your friends end up happy because he was gifted $100

Meanwhile, had you given him your gift, he would have ended up really happy because he now has two gifts, even if one was quite cheaper than the other one.
