That's why you should study chess instead. You waste your entire life staring at a board, but at least you can flex being an IM at the next family function
I get that university CAN be good for your career but only if you're studying something profitable. Like something that can pay your student loan back easily.
correct. reddit hates to hear it but the reality is a large majority of college degrees are completely worthless and have no market value. I worked in student affairs a few years and would tell them "job hunt now" realistically what jobs exist, where are they, how many are there?
universities lie out their ass about pay and opportunities. there will be some fringe shit, that maybe 20 jobs exist for, and thousands of people going for it.
I hate the idea that a higher education's existence should hinge on the fact that there is a market for it. Markets change, profitability adapts, knowledge is forever. Should philosophy grads be warned that jobs are limited in that field? Yes. Should these degrees disappear because of that? Absolutely not
I've never used my degree. But I wouldn't exchange the time I had in college, in and out of the classroom for anything. Much less doing what I would have been doing instead, working a minimum wage job full time.
I mean there are still some degrees worth going to university for. And it can be especially useful if you want to change your career after college. But yeah, it's not that big of a thing.
Similarly, I see barely any benefit to pushing for a masters. The extra years spent on a masters are like the most vital period of someone's career wasted.
The significance of placements is also exaggerated a little too. My uni makes it seem like your career will be a failure unless you get a placement. That's not true, it might not be as easy to get a job straight after uni but it's not gonna have that big of an impact.
100% a good degree can change your life. However, many as said are useless.
Depending on field though you are correct masters and doctorates are often not worth it. The issue is you now cost more and companies don't want to pay proper wages. Not enough education they don't want you. Too much, they don't want you.
I know but Reddit is full of people writing post that they don’t find jobs anymore nd there are a lot of memes about them struggling like other majorsÂ
Because they’re not skilled. They thought a degree alone would be enough to get them a job without doing their due diligence. Dozens of new grads clueless about building software. They can’t write code, they don’t understand how the systems work. It’s gotten especially bad since most of them have their hand held by AI.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve interviewed someone that talked a huge game but during their coding challenge they completely broke down on basic coding concepts because they didn’t have Copilot or Claude to help them.
Just don’t blame everyone else when you majored in something with no market value, then can’t find a high paying job, demanding everyone subsidize your poor decisions.
Do you start every statement with “I might sound too woke but”? You can say your opinion without needing to have a disclaimer. We’re presumably both adults.
The reality is no one “deserves” a job. The job you get is the job you prepare and work for. The whole concept of a “living wage” is pointless because no one has ever been able to define what a living wage is, it’s a nebulous term with no real meaning.
Critical thinking is present in most majors, especially ones that are highly marketable. If it takes 4 years to learn critical thinking then you’ve probably got bigger problems on your hands.
The community has decided that this IS an antimeme!

Student loan? Ha 🇪🇺 Ha 🇪🇺 Ha 🇪🇺
EU? Take 🇬🇧 me 🇬🇧 back 🇬🇧 PLEEEEEASE
Would you rather need to gift your infos to the government to goon or having your chats monitored 24/7 by an AI?
I never said EU was perfect but it's better than nothing, despite what Farage and Johnson would have you believe
It was meant to be more of a "would you rather die or be thrown off a cliff" question tbh
Oh im an idiot I thought you were supporting brexit srry mb

I mean if universities didn't lie out their ass about job opportunities and pay i'd have no problem having higher studies for whatever.
However, education is expensive. You are taking on massive debt for something you might not ever be able to get equal value from.
yeah fair, I'm also from a country where they are more honest and where education costs around 1k a year
Psh that cheap i'd get a degree in everything
Alas, In my country education is hellaciously expensive
Things can have value beyond their marketability.

I don't get the opthalmologist
dad saying philosophy has no scope, sarcastically
This is fucking hilarious considering my sibling has specialization in philosophy. We make fun of them a lot.
They're working as a university teacher right now. That's the only things you can do if your specialization is in a subject in my country.

philosophy
Today’s philosophy majors are tomorrows Starbucks baristas
tomorrows starbucks baristas are yesterdays time travellers
At least according to Reddit its als Computerscience majors nowadays
CS is a marketable degree, especially if you’re skilled.
