Actually, yes, it's a lot of studies coming out that AI is making it so people can't think that their brains are rotting and that they can't read or write. The effects are already being felt and they're very bad. So chances are they really cannot think for themselves.
I mean the logical conclusion is smart phone-->wearable augmented reality devices (glasses, whatever)-->direct neural interface between machine and brain, possibly non-invasive if the science gets better.
