• "Even jeans would have been acceptable, but the values in the Peaky Blinders series are against Afghan culture," Saiful Islam Khyber, a spokesman for the Taliban government's provincial department of Vice and Virtue in Herat city told the BBC.

    "Department of Vice and Virtue"

Oh my god, you get imprisoned for wearing a suit??

For aping decadent western culture i think

I do wonder if it at all has to do with imitating British culture, given the various occupations of Afghanistan by Britain.

Not really, fundamentalist among religions and institutions are just that much of a hardass.

Aren't the values against pretty much every culture? They're violent criminals

It's a deep subject that involves an understanding of the Baradar deal and the Border Wall. The one between Afghanistan and Pakistan, that is.

But the deep take is that, the Taliban is being used to allow Afghans to stabilize their own country. The humiliation of the Outsider leaving (US in this instance) is one mimicked on history (Napoleon's installed Egypt comes to mind). It gives the native people unity and a sense of pride, having gotten rid of 'the bully'.

I meant the Peaky Blinders are violent criminals, and violent crime is pretty much against the values of all cultures

From what I’ve read the Taliban are the least violently criminal leaders of Afghanistan since the fall of communists. The leaders the United States propped up were, by many accounts - child rapists, heroin addicts, and murderers. The Taliban are a step towards greater civility in many respects. Not big on educating women though. That much is true.

I meant the Peaky Blinders, not the Taliban

Only happened after educated individuals took reigns in leadership and begun diplomacy.

Before, Taliban was like any other Islamic fighter,  closed-off from outsiders, guerilla, motivated throwing bodies for Allah, calling martyrs, and bombs.

In a way, that's something the Western influence did right.

Weomen get fined for showing hair so what's new

Why do you say imprisoned. That is not what happened

On the one hand this is bad, but on the other arresting people for being cringe isn't the worst thing for society.

Tell me what France and EU countries do with the hijab... Not imprisonment but a fine, same but different type of oppression.

  • Well, I guess unhinged policing of the dress of not only the women but also the men is one way to move towards gender equality within the framework of the Taliban ideology. Baby steps, baby steps.

Enough men should KNOW IT and feel annoyed

If only men were allowed to wear jeans and Ts in a formal meeting, they would.

We know enough, you won't see much men wearing skin tight pants with their crotch bulge/ass exposed.

That's Southeast Asia for you, the tight ones
