Which, the unnecessary sexualization of female characters in video games is its own topic but I was referring more to the specific concept of high defense armor being especially skimpy.

As for especially skimpy stuff... there were non-mmo games with such, but they are quite older. Need to put some thought into it to get out of recency bias.

Go look at fantasy artwork from the 70's, 80's and early 90's. That's where you'll see the most typical examples. Even the covers for a lot of D&D modules were pretty racy, especially anything involving drow elves.
It's fairly prominent in gacha games. Usually the common and low power outfit for a character in such gachas might be a full body outfit or suit of armor, while the rare and more powerful versions actually lose clothing and basically become bikinis.
If you'll read the whole conversation you'll see I did remember the works of Frank Frazetta and other similar artists from the time. I just hadn't seen any bikini armor lately. But as other chatters have pointed out, the trope is still alive and well.
I wish more games took the equality approach, sometimes when playing a dude, I don't want practical armor, I wanna dress up as a beefy warrior or wizard wearing nothing but skimpy furs and robes, as close to heroic nudity without making the game Adult Only rating
Ill always appreciate Final Fantasy XIV for this, for being an MMORPG willing to give men low level martial gear like the subligar bottoms (why yes they do come in leather too, and there are WAY better shirtless barbarian fits later in the game) 😂
I’m fine with ecchi when it’s at least somewhat realistic. This one is just way too much. It feels like it’s trying way too hard with the borderline nudity at almost every scene , and the girls are absurdly easy.
At some point it just hits you that the whole thing was clearly written by horny dudes, and that completely kills the immersion. Women don’t act like this in real life and they don’t just throw themselves at you for no reason (unless you’re a millionaire or something).
i hate to break it to you but characters dont act realistically in virtually every anime. im sorry you wont be able to get immersed in any anime ever again
