It is not a homeless encampment. It is an open air drug camp. Call it the right thing. These are places for drug users to find drug dealers and get high. Many of these people do have homes, just don’t want to use at them. They are centers for crime, violence and death. And that is simply what the data says, not my own opinion. People who support these things just support drug dealers and the harm that they bring.
Handing out needles is not to stop the drug problem. It is to stop disease transmission.
Do you think these people are going to pay for HIV and HepC treatment? No. The taxpayers are going to eat those costs. Your insurance costs will go up.
The city council’s plan is idiotic, but don’t get that confused with needle programs which have good evidence proving they stop disease transmission.
I used to be a heroin addict for a period of 8 months, another 8 months, and 3 months. In Minnesota there is a law that pharmacies have to sell needles regardless of what the pharmacy believes they are being used for. Some times the pharmacy followed that law, sometimes the cashier took things into their own hands and denied the sale. One time there was a police officer waiting for people to buy needles then bust and search us in the parking lot. I got real lucky that time as he had to leave for an emergency mid search.
Anyways, denying the sale of needles never stops a heroin addict from shooting up. They will use the bleach trick and share a needle. They will not give in and call it a day. They will get high. I believe in arresting drug dealers and fighting addiction but stopping clean needle exchanges only spreads aids and hep c
