all the shadows in the craters are being cast up and to the left.

I have no idea what it is or isn't, but if it is a shadow, its going the wrong way.

    Where?

    parent
    104 points SadisticSnake007

I think it that big black box just sitting there.

    parent root
    89 points PantsDontHaveAnswers

    Menacingly.

    parent root
    15 points mattriver

For those still looking, it’s this cube shaped thing, casting a long shadow.

    https://preview.redd.it/9z01n12xbo9g1.jpeg?width=1312&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5f8a9eff36fb045ff23d79f1a7245d7ddb7910a

EDIT: But if you look at the surrounding terrain, you can see that the shadow is part of a large crater.

    parent root
    5 points JJ8OOM

    Oh yes, that’s aliens.

Debate settled, nothing more to say.

    parent root
    13 points 8ad8andit

If you look at the other shadows closely, you'll see that they point in a different direction than the apparent long shadow coming off the cube shaped thing.

In other words, the cube shaped thing is not casting a long shadow. It's an optical illusion.

And before people start insulting everyone on this sub for being gullible, etc, keep in mind that posts like this are made by bots sometimes, in order to confuse and discredit the sub, and get everyone arguing and insulting each other so that we can't have meaninful conversations that connect us and actually get us somewhere.

    parent root
    24 points Outlandish-man

That is also casting a shadow

    parent root
    14 points Woazzaaa

A shadow on the opposite side of all other shadows visible in the shot ?

    parent root
    4 points gavo_88

Is that because the shadows on the right are lower in the craters and the one on the left from the box is above ground?

    parent root
    2 points Wild_Obligation

Source of light is the right side.

    parent root
    -2 points Mountain_Proposal953

    No other shadows…

    parent root
    6 points arto64

It’s not a box lol it’s just the edge of a crater, it’s very clear.

    parent root
    1 points mattriver

Yeah, I think you’re right. The whole thing is just part of the shadow on that large crater.

    parent root
    2 points arto64

If you look at some of the other carters they have the same pattern.

    parent root
    3 points Airk640

That thing is resolvable to the curve of the horizon. Ball park the size of a small state.

Yeah that's definalty an optical illusion or every amature astronomer with a walmart quality telescope is in on the cover up.

    parent root
    22 points PowerfulYak5235

i think it's an optical illusion and it's just like a dune type feature in the landscape, you can see a similar shape to the right of it, but lit from the other side, if a 100km^3 cube was sitting on the surface of the moon it would be pretty difficult to hide from the public

    parent root
    6 points Outlandish-man

An optical illusion with a shadow?

    parent root
    13 points Jbots

The whole thing is a shadow. Look at the other craters. The light source is coming from the bottom right. Wouldn't make sense if it were a protruding box.

    parent root
    -17 points ParkkTheSharkk

    Wrong

    parent root
    10 points Shaernobill

the "cubes shadow" comes from a ridge on the surface, not the "cube" which itself is a shadow. the "shadow of the cube" would not align with the direction of the other shadows, which - additionally to a non cubed shadow shape - shows it does not belong to "the cube" (for that shadow light needs to come from total different direction)

    https://preview.redd.it/vgk4dzayoi9g1.png?width=1520&format=png&auto=webp&s=07abfdcaa6377424af3c065f71e91f9c3038885f

    parent root
    5 points ARCreef

Exacrly. The cubes shadow doesnt have the same angle as every other shadow. Its a cool optical illusion though.

    parent root
    6 points Skullcrusher

Seriously though, pause at 3:20 and watch in the bottom left. It's the big black cube with a shadow.

    parent root
    1 points arto64

It’s not a big black cube, it’s the shadow on the edge of a crater. I had to try really hard to ignore the crater and see the “box”.

    parent root
    2 points Silver_Jaguar_24

Riiiight. Wrong my dude. Try again. Cube with a long shadow. The shadow falls into a crater on the opposite end from the base of the cube though.

    1. The telescope doesn’t zoom in. It’s a recording with someone zooming in
    2. Literally nothing.
    parent
    28 points Zealousideal-Rip-574

My friend, they’re using a dslr camera with a telescopic lense which absolutely has zoom. I do it with mine all the time when imagining the moon. You can tell it’s on a tripod the way it shakes when they adjust the camera after zooming. It was very familiar to me since I’ve seen it so many times in person with my rig.

Thx for sharing your knowledge - this is the cool part of Reddit

    parent root
    4 points Leading-Box-8435

Let's not forget that it must be motorized to compensate for the Earth's rotation. I've been using the telescope for years, and an object as close as the moon goes damn fast at those magnifications!

    parent root
    -1 points HoldEm__FoldEm

Massive object? What, the crater and shadow? You see the same type of shadows throughout the video

    parent
    12 points L1QU1D_ThUND3R

I agree. Initially I thought it looked like a cubic object casting a large shadow toward the lower left. But once you compare to shadows of the surrounding craters, you notice it’s in the wrong direction. I think what we’re seeing is a long ridge line casting a showdown towards the upper left (same as the craters).

    parent root
    0 points admajic

All the shadows are casting toward the bottom left of the image even the 3 craters go check again.

    parent root
    2 points Megatippa

At the very beginning of the video, the largest Crater in the middle with three smaller craters in it has an interesting shadow on the right side. It's just the shadow of the ridge at the end of the canyon, but if you use your imagination it kind of looks like an AT-AT. The "shadow" is cast in the wrong direction though, so you have to really be looking for something. I didn't realize what we were supposed to be looking at until the very end of the video

    parent
  • 3 points phunkydroid

If that were a real object, it's shadow is pointing the wrong way. It's probably just some odd geography and shadows causing pareidolia (if it's not just a fake video).

    parent
    1 points admajic

But all the shadows are casting towards the bottom left of the image

    parent root
    1 points phunkydroid

The shadows and highlights in all of the craters and the terminator on the moon all show the light coming from lower right corner.

That object and it's shadow are just from the rim of that large crater.
