I never found her funny; it just always felt like she was opening her mouth just to hear herself talk. She was annoying, vapid, & embarrassingly pro-Lottie when Lottie herself would look at her like she was the weird one. Ultimately, I’ve always disliked her, but when she started feuding with Shauna I was inclined to take her side. Where Mari is like a thorn, Shauna is a massive cactus. But then there was a scenario where I genuinely felt like Mari needed to get a grip.

The group was mad that Jackie called them out for the attempted gang rape/murder. You can always say that Jackie could have gone back inside, but ultimately the people who were inside acted insane without remorse & sided with Shauna who was pregnant by Jackie’s boyfriend despite them getting furious that Jackie slept with a newly single Travis. They aren’t the bigger people. They didn’t want to check on her because they got called out. Mari is the one who jumped in snarky as ever to say Jackie should be outside because “they’re all so crazy.”

Despite this however, she is the one to say, “Well it’s not like she needs it.” About Jackie’s sweater, then instantly tries to take it off her corpse. I’m not saying that it isn’t valid to want to use valuable materials in the winter, but at the same time Mari is the one who started to open her mouth again & made the situation worse before Jackie died. It doesn’t sit right with me that she doesn’t even think of how she insulted Jackie in hopes of her going outside. She has no tact when trying to make a point about having an extra resource in the winter. She instantly just wants to take her jacket off her corpse without any sort of respect for her body either. Like Jackie is a coat hanger!

She was right when she called out Shauna for being a hypocrite, but Mari is not the right person to do it. She was the most vocal one to rally behind Shauna because she was sore over being called out. She isn’t some innocent bystander. She was a direct instigator who was smug about it too. Then she suddenly feels like she can just grab the jacket off Jackie? Again she can be an advocate for Jackie’s jacket to go to the team but trying to snatch it off her instantly & saying, “not like she needs it,” after she mocked her right before death? That isn’t helping your point! You aren’t securing that jacket for the team by giving Shauna a reason to start beating you up.

She didn’t deserve to die obviously, but my God, she has the self control of a hungry street dog & wouldn’t stop talking. Unfortunately she drew the infamous card & while I’m happy she cursed Shauna before she went out I wish she could have learned to STFU sometimes because my good god.

  • I’ve always enjoyed Mari because she feels like one of the most realistic characters. She is very immature and not very nice most of the time…which is very teenage appropriate.

I think she says a lot of mean things, and yes, it’s pretty insensitive to Shauna to want to grab Jackie’s jacket, but I think in that specific instant she’s ultimately right; they’re in a life or death situation, trying to make it through winter - somebody should have used the jacket for sure. Maybe not Mari necessarily, but someone.

Yeah I agree with you- she was immature and said/did some silly things, which was very in character for her. I've always thought she was a bit younger than Lottie and co, which explains a chunk of the follower mentality she has as well.

Her development in S3 was great- she really started to grow up and mature through the season. Everything that happened with coach really resonated with her. There's an argument to be made by the end of S3 that she was the main leader against Shauna/Lottie's craziness instead of Nat, which made her death even more impactful.

That is a respectable take too! I just think like this; even if she is right, if I’m on “Team Take Jackie’s Jacket”, I wouldn’t want Mari to be the loudest advocate.

Because all she’s doing is irritating Shauna, then she’s also just taking the jacket off the corpse. Mari already mocked Jackie before she died & as hypocritical as it would be for Shauna to be mad, she is still going to get mad. So even if we did secure that jacket, Mari’s methods would have helped build resentment in the team & in the long run we would have even more difficultly functioning as a group.

Yes, that’s a fair point. If I thought we should use Jackie’s jacket, I would have definitely sighed and been annoyed that Mari brought it up first, because she had definitely not learned anything about tact at that point!

Fr. then grabbing it off her corpse was just crazy. Like, you aren’t helping our point!

  • Why not just mark the post as spoiler rather than putting the spoiler text for each paragraph

Fair enough! I’ll switch it up :3

Much easier to read, thank you! Lol

Of course! I kind of just…forgot to use the spoiler tag. I’m so smart. 🤓

  • Mari was a character that loved to mess with people, but not hurt them. The plane scene where she messes with akilah and then quickly says she's joking after realizing akilah took her seriously is an example of that. And in the wilderness that basically became her defense mechanism (all the girls had one in some capacity). And after Jackie's death and consumption she did feel remorse and guilt but she didn't express it externally but rather internalized it and it manifests as defensiveness, judgment, and emotional hardening rather than sorrow or apology. She became Lottie top glazer in S2 because she had to use the wilderness to make sense of what was going on and what she was feeling. And the jacket scene is a good example of both her and shuana grief clashing, they both blame themselves in Jackie's death but one wants to just move on (Mari) and one wants to hold on (Shuana). So when she tries and takes Jackie's jacket and Shauna pushes her Mari lashes out and says "Now you're her protector? Too little too late" I always interpret that scene of Mari saying they failed to protect Jackie, they failed her and Shuana having more concern for her frozen corpse then when she was freezing to death is just sad and wrong.

So yeah Mari just like every character in this show just coped with the endless trauma of the wilderness in her way by being snarky and talking shit. I don't know what fallouts may have happened prior to s3 to sour Shuana and Mari situation to the degree that it got too but as Natalie put it "probably was just dumb girl shit" that could have been easily solved with a conversation.

  • Misty was right when she called Mari a brat lol. She's not the worst person in the world or anything, but she was a jerk and liked to agitate people. She's one of those people who just always has to get a word in.

I think she's an entertaining character, but I definitely wouldn't say I like her particularly.

  • Hated mari, selfish, stupid, immature and 0 character development

I knew girls like Mari in high school and they either instigated conflicts or were the first ones to start flapping their gums to escalate things. I so wasn't sorry that Pit Girl turned out to be Mari. She stabbed Coach Ben in the back after he pulled her out of the pit. He could've left her there. Ratted him out in about 2 seconds. Karma.

  • Mari was never portrayed to be a sympathetic character. They teased it momentarily when she was stuck in the cave with coach. But she could have supported him more during the trial and chose not to do so.

True! That testimony was kind of crazy though. Definition of, “look at my lawyer dawg I’m going to jail😭🙏🏼”

  • OP I agree with you 😭 … I’ve never thought Mari was “girlboss” or even really that funny… she’s always stuck out to me as a mean girl and I really think people just like her because her actress is so pretty.

The characters themselves even reference Mari just being straight MEAN before the crash. I do agree with her in some scenarios, like when Shauna spat in her food, but overall she really wasn’t the best one to challenge any of the girls, because she was so unlikable.

Mari has always been such a mean girl idk how people could like her. she doesn’t even have redeeming qualities imo

She’s for sure no where near as bad as Shauna or anyone else out there to be honest. I wouldn’t say she doesn’t have redeeming qualities because she’s not pure evil. She just doesn’t have the kind of likability that the other characters have.

Still funnily enough, Jackie gets labeled a Mean Girl by many fans of the show & the characters in it. I don’t think that fits, as while Jackie can be self-centered, she isn’t an intentionally antagonistic, rude, bully who enjoys hurting peoples feelings at every waking moment.

Mari is more accurately the Mean GirlTM trope, but she just isn’t that popular amongst her teammates or schoolmates. It’s harder for people to recognize her as the Mean Girl imo because she doesn’t have that kind of social clout that Jackie does. I think that since Jackie was so popular, people assumed that she was a Mean Girl because it is part of the criteria (but not the end all be all) of the trope.

Yes, exactly. Jackie isn’t a mean girl, that is just projected on her because she fits the aesthetics of the archetype.

Shauna is objectively worse in behavior, even before the crash…but shauna is pathological so it makes her a more interesting person. She also has some redeeming qualities. I can’t think of any redeeming qualities for Mari, or any interesting ones. She’s boring & snotty.

i don’t hate her or anything, i don’t think she deserved to die, but she is one of the least interesting and most annoying characters imo.

That is completely fair. I think it sucks as there’s something to be said about how a lot of the POC characters can be one-note in this story or side tracked for the white characters.

Yeah, that’s true. We have basically just Tai and Travis and Travis didn’t get an adult timeline. Although I like what is going on with Akilah and I look forward to her development next season.

I’m also curious about Lottie, is she white? Neither her younger or adult character seem white to me

I agree. I went to school with (too many, if you ask me) mouthy, instigating girls like her and wasn't sad to see Shawna spit in her food or see her end up as Pit Girl. Especially after how fast she turned Ben in after he'd rescued her from the pit.

  • no because the minute she went “so now you want to protect her? too little too late” i was like “i hope they eat you next”. fuck mari’s two-faced ass fr.

The thing got me was just like sure, Shauna is a hypocrite. But you were literally smugly smirking as you said that Jackie should be the one going outside. You don’t just rally behind someone then try & call them out. Especially when your egging on resulted in someone leaving & dying.

    EXACTLY!!! exactly.

  • mari is enjoyable and i was very sad when she died but it's very clear she was always a jerk. coach ben even says that she was awful pre crash, so the situation is obviously exacerbating her worst traits. you're meant to side eye/ dislike her in the situations you listed
