The American Heart Association said Pearl Jam’s “Even Flow” has the right beats per minute for CPR. It’s more relevant for us and more positive than “Another one bites the Dust”. So now we can mumble through CPR and save someone’s life.

  • So the person dies while I try to figure out what Eddie Vedder was singing?

“Well, the person died because you didn’t maintain 100 beats per minute, because you were busy looking at the album notes” (for you younguns, we used to have to buy the CD and look at the little booklet inside to know what Eddie Vedder was saying.)

I never owned the CD, so to me the lyrics to Evenflow are still one of life's great mysteries.

    Bigfoot, Stonehenge, and Eddie Vedder.

Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again Oh, feelin' maybe he'll see a little better, set a days, ooh yeah Oh, hand out, faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar, oh yeah Oh, dark grin, he can't help, when he's happy looks insane, oh yeah

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Someday yet, he'll begin his life again Life again, life again...

Kneelin', looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read, ooh yeah Oh, prayin', now to something that has never showed him anything Oh, feelin', understands the weather of the winter's on its way Oh, ceilings, few and far between all the legal halls of shame, yeah

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Someday yet, he'll begin his life again Whispering hands, gently lead him away Him away, him away... Yeah! Woo...ah yeah...fuck it up...

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away Someday yet, he'll begin his life again, yeah Oh, whispering hands, gently lead him away Him away, him away... Yeah! Woo...uh huh...yeah, yeah, fuck em up again...

I just mumble that blend of words like I have been doing since the 90’s

It's Evenflow, not Yellow Ledbetter. 🤣

  • Is everyone familiar with the Gypsy Kings: Bamboleo?

    Time to microdose some peppers

I’ve seen them twice. If you have the opportunity it is so worth it. Fantastic show.

  • You’re pushing to a much spicier song.

(Ha, I beat you by 2 minutes!)

At least you could offer me a nice egg in this trying time!

This was exactly where my mind went 😂

  • I thought Stayin’ Alive was perfect all around.

At first I was afraid I was petrified…

This is what I learned when I got life guard and cpr certified at 15 back in the 90s

Younger generations aren't as familiar with this song. While this makes sense to update it, AHA released a massive suggested song list, diluting the importance of locking a single song to memory. In an emergency, I'm not remembering which Lady Gaga song has the right BPM.

Not sure which younger generation you're referring to but the younger generation familiar with Even Flow (us) is familiar with Staying Alive, and the younger generation now is, mostly, not familiar with Even Flow. We knew it because of our parents and it still being played a lot in mainstream media growing up. Even Flow not as much in the same amount of time.

Why not just keep the Staying Alive song active with each generation even if only for CPR purposes? The title/main lyrics are appropriate given the situation....

Youths who are taught CPR for the first time. I work in healthcare and we do learners program for high school students. The change that AHA suggested made sense.

Music trends seem to be every 30 years. Kids like 90s grunge while we liked the Doors, Beetles, Led Zeppelin. Makes sense they would know Even Flow. And sadly a lot of them don’t know Staying Alive

(For the record I didn’t downvote)

It seems like they should have just picked something modern and huge as a present day song instead of having a million choices.

Also, I hope I don’t go out to someone pressing on my chest to the beat of “Bye, bye, bye”!

  • I do it to Stayin' Alive as per the Office. I'm a firefighter but I've actually had EMT's abs Medics how good my compressions are. Why change it up

  • I’ve always enjoyed the Imperial March for my CPR training. I’ve never had to perform CPR, but I’d like to think that my constant refresh courses and certifications I’m ready for anything! Even the dreaded AED..

I've gone through multiple recertifications over the past twenty years. Had to call 911 for the first time last month and the operator was getting me ready to start CPR in case the person did not restart breathing, and had ZERO recollection of what needed to be done in that moment (luckily the person started breathing).

Also, people should practice finding/opening their phone keypads. My iPhone defaults to the last thing I looked at on my phone app, which is pretty much never the keypad, and in my panic it took way longer than it should have for me to figure it out.

I’ve absolutely been the person to call 911 and wait for the ambulance, just never been the person to perform CPR. My dad in particular gives me grief for how often I Hey Siri everything but honestly it works. You can also long hold the power button and volume down (easy to do when you’re gripping your phone tightly with adrenaline kicking in) and it will have a (swipe) SOS feature enabled to call 911.

I also took a friend once to a fire station open house to practice calling 911. They have a phone set up there for the kids to practice calling, but my friend had been through some stuff and this was identified as an opportunity for adding a tool to their emergency tool box.

All of this is super helpful--thank you!

  • Weezer’s song Buddy Holly too!

For anyone who has ever wondered but keeps forgetting to Google what he was saying. Now, you too can save a life.

I was Ten when Ten came out and obsessively read the liner notes. I'm happy to report I've been getting these lyrics right for 35 years..Also, Mookie! 🏀

  • Would it stand to reason that “Jeremy” has the same BPM? (another downer song though).

  • I always used Thriller.

  • I really hope they didn’t play guitar hero…

Puts extra urgency on the phrase “no whammy, no whammy, no whammy”

  • First I was afraid, I was petrified…

  • It was before my time but I am much more likely to do staying alive. Though honestly, since we got Lucas machines I haven't sung to myself when giving cpr

  • As much as I'm a big PJ fan, I think Staying Alive is still appropriate given the title/context. Even if we're not smack dab in the middle of the 70s/early 80s anymore, where the Bee Gees reigned, we can still carry the song into modern times even if just for CPR purposes. Plus we're not that far removed from that time period that our generation needed a new song for it. Maybe the generation being raised and born now will (and even then, there's no reason to not use it for CPR) but why would we lol

  • I was taught Staying Alive had the right rhythm as well, never heard anyone recommend Queen.

  • Shock advised

  • Its only counts if its High Quality CPR

  • Nope. Evenflo is baby bottles and formula stuff now.

  • [deleted]

    cardio pulmonary resuscitation

you don’t know what CPR is, even with the thumbnail? Original, chest compression rhythm on a person was advised to be matched to the beat of a well known song, Staying Alive. Because it’s not well known anymore they had to think of new songs.

The reason this (and a lot of other subreddits) are so US-centric is because the vast majority of users of reddit as a whole are from the US. If you want more representation from your own country or just others in general, post threads about it.

    Damn, you found us out!

    No Kool-Aid for you!

If you think toy/clothes/entertainment trends from our generation, some global, are a cult, this sub is probably not for you.

I think he took his wallet

  • First I was afraid, I was petrified....

The Cake version seems like the Proper Xennial one.
