Wait the game dificulty changes depending on month I didn't knew the extent of that I Knew because of thw achievements but didn't know that was more to it
The game has an internal counter that not just progresses the enemy encounters based on the part of the story you are in but also by how much time has passed. Thats why its best to hit the alien base the moment everyone has level 2 weapons and armor so you just gotta deal with chrysallids at the worst in an area that they can't sneak up on you in.
He delayed so far that the game threw an Ethereal at him during the base defense mission, a critical fail that could completely screw you over.
No, I mean that story missions get harder the later you do them (up to a point) just like the regular, procedurally generated, missions do. It's seperate from the difficulty setting you choose when starting a campaign. I think that only affect enemy stats and how smart they play, not what species get deployed.
The base defense mission always occurs within a month after the alien base assault iirc, if you wait long enough you can get sectopods on that mission.
That being said this is actually the only mission prior to the overseer UFO that ethereals can appear on.
I can’t remember completely but I think if you get an ethereal on this mission it upgrades the UFO enemies from sectoid commanders to ethereals like destroying the overseer UFO would. Might be wrong on that.
Ethereals finally had enough of your shit lol
Open up commander I just want to talk
How the fuck you get an etheral to show up?
Probably by having the mission occur in November.
What you mean in November?
In-game November. Game starts in March 2015 and the aliens field stronger forces every month. The story missions scale in difficulty as well.

He's going for the canon Xcom story path
The Ethereal got to mind control one security rookie before getting plasma sniped. I'm so sorry for being bad at the game.
I did not accuse you of being bad. I stated that it could screw you over. Im glad it didnt.
Ok, but I don't see how one Ethereal is more of a threat to a squad of colonels with plasma weapons and titan armor here than in any UFO mission.

Remember, Remember, the 5th of November...
or else.

sec-sectopods!???!
I lost my first good Ironman Impossible run because I rolled 4 sectopods on the alien base assault.
Jesus fucking christ!
Whoa, I've never seen more than two sectopods in any mission.
This is weird to yall? I always have these show.
I always thought Ethereals are completely locked behind the Overseer UFO mission.

Don't think I ever had them not show in this mission
OP is vanilla XCOM, in Long War it's pretty assured an Ethereal will pop over
The low-ranked soldiers were probably scared shitless! :D
