I think mecs and vipers will hit themselves with rockets and spit respectively, if they are standing near one of your soldiers. They won’t shoot a singular target, but count themselves for the purpose of using the area attack.
I'm afraid, Xcom is long since stop giving a f-UCK about it. Wearing enemies uniforms? Using inhumane weaponry, that skewer, burn, melt and poison enemy combatants?
Just spread out, AI is too dumb to use it on singular targets

Can confirm. This is how my templar died during final battle last run.
Considering this is intended behavior, in a way, the AI is being smart and doing their job.
