The_lonely_poster first joined r/WritingPrompts a couple of years ago, back then, more as a prompter as a writer. But as they hung around here longer they started writing for other people’s prompts as well as posting their own, then reading and commenting on other people’s stories too (which we always love to see). More recently, they’ve been popping up in our weekly feature post Fun Trope Friday, challenging themselves to write in different genres utilising different tropes, as well joining our discord server to join in with our campfire events. It’s been great watching their writing develop in that time, starting to get a feel for their writing style which often features a healthy dose of humour along with some wonderfully curmudgeonly characters. Congratulations u/the_lonely_poster! Now, as is tradition, time for some questions!
1) What made you start writing here as well as posting prompts? And is there any difference between the kinds of prompts you write for and those you share yourself?
2) What would you say is your favourite story that you've shared here, or the one that you think best represents your writing style?
3) If you had to do secret santa with your characters, who would you hope to draw and what would you get them? And who would you want to draw you and what would they get you?
1) Well, I started writing for a pretty petty reason. I used to read a bunch of internet stories, still do. But some people are really bad at it. I remember I was reading a rather enjoyable story up to that point before the writer had seemingly lost their marbles and had their main character go on an out of character rant for an entire chapter about politics. At that point, I decided that I could do better, and set out to prove it. I like to think I've done so.
2) If I had to pick one to represent my style, or at least my favorite, it'd have to be 'Penning an Invasion' I believe it was called. It was a response to one of the ftfs that I had a lot of fun with, the signature overuse of commas and semicolons is also there.
3) I'd probably do it with the main character of the story I'm writing now: Sir Richard from Royal Guard. He'd be easy to get gifts for and would probably be happy with just about anything.
Okay, that’s too funny. I woke up groggily this AM and saw ‘TyrantTank’ won and thought, “Darn, I don’t know their words. Guess I can’t say anything…” Then I realized it was u/the_lonely_poster who has graced us with some wonderful stories on FTF and I got excited!
Congrats Lonely! You have a way with action descriptions that I really like in that you not only parse out the actions of the scene well, but you also describe them in a way that feels very immediate and real. I also think your pacing is quite strong!
Rainbow already asked some great questions, but I’d add:
1) Favorite would have to be either fantasy or sci-fi, honestly it depends on mood though. Least favorite is easily allegory, if that counts as a genre, if it doesn't, mystery.
2) Yes, actually. The story of Helebrand, who I've had show up in a few of the FTFs, I'd love to explore more, but unfortunately it's sitting on the backburner as other stories take priority.
3) I couldn't really pin down a specific author unfortunately, if you put a gun to my head and made me say a name, I'd probably say Neil Shusterman, the writer of Scythe, but it's honestly a mix of many different authors.
