Hey all, hoping there's a few secondary school teachers here who can give me some advice.
I'm about to start school placement for my PME in secondary school and was wondering what is appropriate regarding skirt length? The school I'll be working at doesn't really have a dress code, most teachers seem to just wear what's comfortable for them.
I have a few "mini skirts", not talking like, barely covering my bum mini but above the knee mini. Something akin to this. Is it acceptable to wear something like that in a school setting? If I do wear them, it would be with thick tights, probably boots and a wooly jumper or something else on top that doesn't show any skin at all.
I have other longer skirts that I'm happy to wear, but I'll admit I'm not really a "trousers" person (though will probably invest in some once I start working properly lol).
Also any style advice at all for some nice school outfits that don't feel too overly formal or "stuffy" would be really appreciated 😊
I would not have worn a skirt this short when I was working as a teacher. I think the general vibe is business casual in most schools and I would interpret that as skirts to the knee at least.
I can work with that! I have some nice midi and long length skirts that will be appropriate, and most of my tops are full coverage too.
Conversely, myself and others wear this length all the time. Depends on the school, really.
The advice I was given as a PME is to err on the side of caution. That might make you the most formal/stuffy looking person in the staff room, but it’s far better than the other direction. Even if the other teachers are more casual, remember that they are there longer and can “get away” with more. Remember that you will be looking for references from this school, you don’t want to give a bad impression.
I also found it helped psychologically - if I “looked like a teacher” I was more confident in myself, especially on placement when the students know a mile off that you are a student teacher. I’ve now been qualified in the same school for 4/5 years and so have become more casual in my dressing and I do actually miss dressing a bit nicer
That's very true! I'm going to play it safe and probably just wear my longer midi/ankle length skirts with some nice tops/blouses.
I do look on the younger side too so I don't want to be giving off too much "baby student teacher vibes" so I think I'll invest in some nice trousers too once I'm a bit more settled.
Definitely best to play it safe! Dunnes do some very nice work trousers and not too expensive, I’m not much of a trousers person either but they do the job
I’d probably avoid it until getting in there and seeing what the vibe of the school is. Some workplaces may deem it acceptable and others will not. You will see the workplace culture and expected attire and then follow the lead of those there. Personally I’d say knee length or just grazing above the knee is likely the shortest acceptable though in most schools
That's what I'm thinking, will probably play it safe and see how the vibe is.
It's actually my old school that I'm going to and I remember at the time that there was quite a mix, some were very casual in jeans and some dressed to the absolute nines but it's all under new management now so I'll have to see if things have changed much!
As someone else said, as a PME you err on the side of caution. Even if the other teachers are wearing more casual clothes, you need to present a professional image Remember, your PME tutor will be marking you, among other things, on your professional image. When you have a full time job you can relax a bit
That skirt is too short, even with tights and a wooly jumper. Imagine leaning over desks to correct or bending down to pick up a marker.
Knee length is shortest acceptable length I think.
Hiya I did the PME a few years ago, and I will say those skirts are too short even with thick tights. The worst thing is If you drop something and are trying to bend and pick it up without the kids catching a glimpse. Knee length at an absolute minimum but you will be more comfortable if they are longer. It also depends on the school, my first school was mixed and we wore a nice top/blouse and calf length skirts or trousers. My second school was a boys school and the PMEs we covered nearly wrists to ankles. You will also learn what works for you the more you teach, for me I go for comfort above all else. I teach science so for me I don't have long sleeves so the labs are easier for me. If you have any more questions, send me a message. But something like this skirt would be ideal.
red skirt
I'm at a mixed school so definitely will be trying to make sure I don't stand out too much to the boys in my classes.
I'll be teaching art so I'd like to be able to make a wardrobe that's a nice mix of "quirky" and professional, the skirt you've linked is lovely and exactly the kind of thing I'll probably be wearing the most tbh!
Many teachers in my school would wear what your describing above with 200 denier black tights and its fine. I don't think I'd chance it if I were starting out doing my PME though. The Zara work trousers are really popular and come in lots of different colours. Dunnes also usually have nice work trousers.
Thank you, I'll check them out! Would be nice to get something in a different colour maybe. I'll be teaching art so I'd like to get a good balance of appropriate and quirky for my outfits 😂
Nope, especially if there are boys. Not worth the comments you'd get
And the upskirting; happened to someone I know, whole she was leaning over a student, the guy behind his phone camera out. The SNA spotted it and there was hell to pay, but better avoid the possibility of situations like that
Knee length at least, if you wear those velvet lined Penney's leggings you could get away with dresses and skirts just above the knee but not above the knee and just tights.
You will be a professional, you need to be wearing office wear not office siren. Students won't take you seriously if you dress like a 20 year old no matter if you are 20 or not.
There's also the practical parts of needing to bend or crouch to pick something up without flashing anyone.
If you dress more professional you will feel it.
Midi skirts and dresses, or trousers, with a long sleeved top and cardigan, or a blouse. No t-shirts but blouses with t-shirt length sleeves are fine.
You've gotten some helpful comments on the skirts, I wanted to help you out if you do decide to get some trousers! I really like United Colors of Benneton for work-appropriate trousers/chinos. I work in the civil service, but I think the dress codes are similar enough that the trousers sold there would be appropriate. I have three pairs - tan, navy, and olive-green that are office-appropriate, especially when paired with a blouse.
Primary school teacher here - although I don't often wear skirts myself we were warned back in college to keep it professional and the unspoken rule was to keep it to the knee (although once you're out some schools are more lax than others when it comes to dress code). I remember multiple girls in my year in Mary I being pulled into the principal's offices in their placement schools a few years ago to be given out to for dressing inappropriately during their placement. Best to err on the side of caution!
I'm not a teacher so I'm not sure what's appropriate. However, I do work in an office so I had to make some of my outfits more 'work' appropriate.
If you look up skirt extenders, you might find one that suits your skirts. I think they're great
I don't usually wear dresses and I'm not a fan of jeans either, so you can imagine the hustle i had to go through until i find what works for me. Halara working pants did absolutely perfect. It's comfy and you still look proffesional
I'm not a teacher that wears trousers often either. I live in dresses and skirts because they feel like my professional wardrobe. However, I do keep them below the knee, usually midi to maxi length. I'm not worrying about being appropriate then and I still feel put together. My general rule for dressing at post primary is skirts below knees and higher necks. And don't wear crop tops. Good luck on your placement!
Depends on your school context too! On one of my placements I got made take out ear/nose piercings as the staff were expected to follow the students dress code. What was allowed was one pair of non-dangling earrings, which I genuinely thought was loopy! Placement inspectors also have very skewed perceptions of what is appropriate for school imo, we were told to wear heels if we were short by the college, and essentially raid our elderly relatives wardrobes as sporty shoes and jeans would have warranted a negative mark on your overall placement feedback. And I literally graduated last year! However, as a PP teacher I would wear skirts that short. I’m 6’1 so most skirts land a good chunk above my knee. This does not take away from my capabilities of teaching so I don’t think it should matter
The thick tights would make this fine I think. Read the room - try and fit in would be my advice. Each school is its own microcosm of unspoken rules and culture.
Lots of teachers in my school wore similar skirt lengths, they were the most popular teachers.
All boys school for what it's worth.
Oh god I can imagine! It's a mixed school I'll be in, though I don't think I want to draw too much attention, at least not while on placement lol.
