Probably is. There are a few vids of people in Africa or Cambodia or something attempting to ride an escalator for the first time, and this looks similar to that. That's KL tower, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Malay auntie came from a rural area (to visit the big city) where there isn't any building over 2 levels tall.
As a toddler, you have your parents there to hold you, to pull you upright when they feel you tumbling backwards.
Moving handrails won't feel when you're about to fall, they won't pull you right back up to compensate, they don't pull as hard as your parents would, and you're certainly a lot heavier than you were as an adult.
nah, the guy was constantly stepping backwards as the escalator went up, the railing on the right was still moving up until the escalator was stopped, but the left railing was being held in place by something.
It's likely what happened was that he was gripping the railing under his shoulder in fear of being pushed into her, and his left hand was pressing the rubber belt into the railing really hard, causing it to be unable to continue moving.
Because you didnt watch anyone else get on the escalator just stepping on and then you grab the railing and put all your weight on it and expecting the stairs to suddenly reverse and magically put your feet back under you while somebody is trying to push you back upright and not letting go of that walking stick is all just screaming you shouldn't have left the house that day.
Like a damn newborn giraffe

But escalators are easier then stairs or the ground in many rural areas.
Also everyone rides one for the first time (usually as a toddler) and doesn't experience these issues.
As a toddler you're just put on one and the adults make it happen.

My son is terrified of everything, took a lot to get him to try one out
nope. the left hand rail wasn’t moving along with the stairs.
This was like watching a toddler in a wading pool.
"Just put your feet down!"
Tbf the railing was stationary
You can see it moving when she grabs it, I think it stopped due to her weight pulling it back
That would escalate anyone's feelings for being self conscious about their weight
There's usually a stop button on the ends in case of emergencies. Someone probably pushed it.
That stops the whole escalator
I'm sure that guy had his shirt caught under the railing that made it stop.

The murderous U.N. strikes again.
I'm confused
they knew it would be a disaster
I was thinking "drunk people at a party" but "rural villager visits big city" is more reasonable and charitable.
She was just waiting for the right president to come and stop it
That's genuinely funny
How much more helpless can one be.
The left handrail stopped moving. Shitty maintenance created this.
qq
Escalatored quickly?
The handrail isn't moving, prolly swept her feet from under her before she could catch up
Why can’t she just stand?
Why isnt the handrail moving with it
r/therewasanattempt to escalate

The handrails didn’t work?
