Whenever I take photos with flash, these black splotches appear in my eyes. I have eye problems tho so maybe thats why (lazy eye AND astigmatism) but im just curious!

  • you should call an ophthalmologist and get an exam

    [deleted]

Especially since the two pictures you’ve posted have completely different patterns, locations, and edges of dark spots most likely due to the angle of the camera/flash, shadows, distance, red eye correction, multi-lens camera etc.

I'm supposed to see an eye doctor once a year?!?!?!? last eye exam i had was back in high school 26 years ago...

Yes. You should get your eyes checked annually. Especially as you get older. There are all sorts of things that can happen with your eyes and usually early detection is important.

Uh, you should definitely get an eye exam. They’re not just for people who need glasses. Eye exams are preventative care. These days they literally scan the back of your eye with a machine to check for signs of glaucoma.

Yeah they are checking for a million health conditions, not just if you need glasses. Diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, cancers, neurological conditions, worms.. all sorts!

Yes! Eye exams aren't just for checking your vision.

Bad news: you are now blind.

Go see an eye doc. Better safe than sorry.

Call an optometrist first. Most ophthalmologists require a referral from an optometrist because they're surgical specialists.

Eyes are so frustrating. (If you're American) they're like the Wild West of body parts, no one wants to fucking touch an injured eye. Added complexities abound when wading into billing and coding and "how do we submit this" type shit. It's truly baffling how such essential body parts are kinda just floating out in left field in American health care.

Sure there's the joke "teeth are apparently luxury bones", but at least the care and billing and coverage surrounding oral health is fairly straightforward

90 % of the hate in my heart stems from shit like this. I hate these fucking scum

I'm so glad I live in Canada

That’s not true. I’ve never once seen an optometrist. I only ever go to ophthalmologists.

Issues usually exceed referral requirements because of time constraints. Especially with eyes.

Also change your eyebrow piercing to a shorter bar while you’re at it!! The extra room causes irritation which can lead to rejection and migration ♡

no no, reddit is better. just let nature do its course

and here I was thinking it was a demonic possession

  • Wait. Only when you take photos? What do you see in the mirror?

Is this red eye removal gone rogue?

Its only in photos with the back camera flash on, in the mirror and any other photo, my eyes are normal

How is ur vision and when was the last time u had a comprehensive eye exam? Get a good night sleep. It might be nothing but go to an eye doc and get ur exams anyway just it be sure.

my vision is fine, like i havent noticed any changes i think? nothing to complain about at least. and i am definitely gonna go see an eye doctor soon, just to make sure! im hoping its just my phone camera being weird

I didn't notice any changes in my vision too until I got an eye test recently and the optometrist showed me how much my vision could be corrected. I wear glasses now.

Always a good idea even if you're 100% sure you're fine.

Go see an ophthalmologist, not an optometrist. Be sure to show them this pic.

  • Edit: OP, I apologize. I did not read your original comments closely enough. You said this only appears when you use a flash. Another top comment noted that that mark is actually redeye reduction algorithm. That makes sense

Redactes: That’s in front of the iris so it’s either something in your cornea or fluid in the anterior chamber behind it. The only thing I could imagine is some sort of hemorrhage but I’m not qualified. You should see a doctor and soon.

Oh my.. i have an astigmatism, could it just be that???

No, astigmatism is the shape of your eye, not discoloration

Eye dr and you'll be alright just check it out soon

  • Could be a lot of nothing or cancer. Go to the docror.

Eye doctor or just a regular doctor ?

Preferably an Ophthalmologist over an Optometrist. But just find a doctor soon in the event this is a progressing issue.

Prob Eye doctor as it is their specialty.

I mean at this point. Where ever you can get in first... probably a doctor doctor. Good chance eye doctor would send you to another doctor. So optimologist. Or an old doctor thats seen a lot.

    Optimologist isn’t a word. It’s ophthalmologist

I thought optimologist is the guy who makes sure I keep a positive attitude

Mines a lady but yeah they come in all sorts of flavors.

You like ‘Mos over Owls and Phillies?

I find thiw hilarious even though I have no ides who the 'Mos are. Cosmos? Temple Owls?

    Optimos

    some prefer green blunts

Tomato potatoes. Op just need to go to a dang doctor. 8 out of 10 gynomologist approve this recommendation.

Or optometrist, I'm guessing this was a conflation of the two

  • Everybody here saying you should call an ophthalmologist is wrong. Ophthalmologists are specialists in eye surgery and usually require a referral from an optometrist. Go see an OPTOMETRIST.

Source: Optician (works with optometrists and ophthalmologists)

Solid! You're a real one, glasses boy

I see an ophthalmologist annually but never have had or discussed eye surgery.

I don't fault you for not know this since you are just an optician but ,this just depends upon your insurance. Anyone can go see an ophthalmologist. You may just end up paying out of pocket when your insurance doesn't cover it.

With my insurance, specialists, including ophthalmologist.

My aunt was an optician. She had a high school degree and no college education. She needed a job, the prescription glasses place in the mall was hiring and she applied.

You need to see an optometrist before you see an ophthalmologist, dumbass. This has NOTHING to do with insurance.

Go into an ophthalmologist with a non-emergency condition, and they WILL ask you to get a referral from an optometrist first. Full stop. It'd be like going to a cardiologist for a physical workup. They will tell you to go see your GP first.

Don't come in here talking down to me as "just an optician" like you know everything because your aunt was one. Where I am, you need to go to school, and you need to be licensed to practice opticianry.

Get all the way fucked, loser.

So, like I said, there's a reason a college degree is not needed to be an optician.

Source: I've personally made an appointment and saw an ophthalmologist on 3 different occasions for 3 different eye injuries.

My god, you people are idiots.

Referral rules depend on location and insurance.

Lol this is harsh but true for some! I have shitty vision insurance and great health insurance. Health insurance covers opthalmologists, so I go to them first, as opposed to optometrists. Usually only costs like 30-40$ for me for an appointment!

So wtf is an optician? I thought that was another word for optometrist Dx

This is inaccurate. Ophthalmologists are MDs for medical and surgical eye care, not “usually only surgery.” Also, referral rules depend on region and urgency; emergencies are assessed urgently. Optometrists are great for many problems, but red-flag symptoms should go to urgent care/ER and ophthalmology pathways.

Ophthalmologist vs Optometrist: What's the Difference?

The levels of training and expertise—and what they are allowed to do for you—are the major difference between types of eye care professionals commonly called “eye doctor.”

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors. They are the only eye doctors with medical degrees, either MD or DO (doctors of osteopathic medicine). Optometrists are not medical doctors but are often referred to as eye doctors because they hold doctor of optometry (OD) degrees. Ophthalmologists must complete many more years of medical training than optometrists and opticians.

As a result, an ophthalmologist is the most qualified among eye care professionals to diagnose and treat a wide range of eye diseases, beyond the routine eye and vision care provided by an optometrist.

Optometrists absolutely are doctors. They officially have "Doctor" as their prefix (as opposed to mr or mrs.). They are NOT MDs, but they ARE doctors.

The DIFFERENCE is that ophthalmologists are in specialty fields (Glaucoma, Cataracts, Diabetes, etc.) and optometrists are more of a general health check. Think of it this way: in a medical setting, an ophthalmologist would be a cardiologist, and an optometrist would be a general practitioner.

They are both doctors. Yes, one has to have more specialty training, but they are BOTH DOCTORS.

  • it's probably due to the flash reflecting off the nail in your eyebrow

After reading this and seeing OP’s second pic in the comments, I think this is the likeliest option- the back flash is much brighter/stronger so it would cast a more noticeable shadow than a front facing camera (even compared to front screen “flash”

Does it happen to both eyes? And if so, are both of your eyebrows pierced?

it does happen with both eyes, and only 1 of my eyebrows are pierced 😞 my right eye is my lazy eye (not the one in the pic) so i kind of just assumed it was some weird light reflection thing from that. but i am gonna get it checked out, and even if its just my phone camera glitching, its always good to check with a doctor so i appreciate all these comments

Use a flashlight, not your flash, it'll hopefully stop the phone from doing any major post processing/red eye reductions - bonus for using video, then pulling away the light and adding it back... It'll give you more info to go on. But others who mentioned red-eye reduction.ight be onto something

try taking a picture with it covered up

Sherlock Holmes to the rescue! Very logical possibility

I've had piercings on both eyebrows, this never happened.

  • Red eye correction. Probably a setting in whatever device you’re using

    This what my first thought!

  • You can't see it otherwise? Borrow someone's phone and see if it happens with theirs

  • Is it the cameras auto red eye remover?

  • When light shines in my wife's eyes from the side, it make a super bright focal point on the iris and the white of the eye glows as well. I've never seen this happen with anyone else's eyes. Try with a different brand of phone. If you have an apple, try an android, for example.

  • Check if your phone has an automatic red-eye correction that you can turn off. Alternatively, if you have an old digital camera laying around, see if it appears when you take a flash photo of yourself with that.

  • Something you should definitely go to the optometrist for immediately.

  • Unless you actually see it in the mirror, this looks like the anti-redeye removal early digital cameras had

I know a child who had an eye removed because of cancer - how did they pick it up? Every flash photo taken of them had this weird blur. Completely normal looking to the naked eye/in the mirror. Might be nothing, but you're giving completely false information to OP saying "unless they see it in the mirror"

  • Wait…where’s the other side of the piercing?

  • You’re a wizard harry

  • It's probably just back flash/red eye reduction/shadows, but, as someone with rare eye diseases, I always suggest getting checked out by Optho at least yearly if you've got any eye conditions. I had brown syndrome and astigmatism my whole life, but in my 20s I got eye autoimmune diseases, and it's definitely worth making sure things get caught before they go bad.

  • Looks like a coloboma go to your ophthalmologist and get it checked

  • Go to an ophthalmologist. She will help you.

  • I looked at this for a hot minute trying to figure out what it was. Then realized what I was looking at was something stuck on my screen cover

  • It's called a coloboma. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat occular diseases, surgically or otherwise. Optometrists are not medical doctors who mostly deal with optics and don't treat eye disease. Depending on your insurance you can go straight to a medical specialist or get a referral from a PCP.

Either way, it's usually insignificant unless you are experiencing visual disturbance.

  • Im a little cross eyed with astigmatism as well, and I have never had this issue. However, the way the flash reflects off of your eye can be telling of intraocular issues. Ask your eye doctor.

  • Google maps doesn't want you to see that bit.

  • Take a photo without the red eye reduction setting on. Also take a photo in a very well lit area without the flash. Compare the photos and see if it is still there.

  • It’s a shadow

  • Not sure but it looks cool

  • The eye thing is cool, I’m just wondering why you stuck a needle in your head??

    its an eyebrow piercing

  • Doctor doctor doctor now

  • I’m pretty sure it’s just your phone trying to edit the red eye and not an emergency eye crisis

  • A good reason to go to the doctors

  • If its only in flash pictures it could be the phone auto red reducing filter. That being said it could be transillumination defects. Basically the pigment from your iris flakes off and when light reflects off of your retina it shines through your iris. Thats something that should be monitored since it can clog up the drainage system in the eye causing glaucoma.

  • I know a child who had an eye removed due to a rare form of cancer. Only detected when family noticed a blur in their eye in every flash photo they took, so they went to get it checked out. Completely undetectable in the mirror or just looking with the naked eye. Please get off reddit and get to a Dr for an eye specialist referral. It may be absolutely nothing.. but it could be something, and you wont forgive yourself for believing some redditor reassuring you its "just a red eye remover setting".

  • Demon possession. It happens more often then you think. Go see a priest. or witchdoctor. Or not. Your choice.

    Jk prolly just astigmatism lol

  • Wheres the rest of your piercing??

Partially behind her hair, I can see it, can't you?

  • does your device automatically remove red eye from photos? it could just be the red eye removal application being a little wonky. it looks like it to me.

  • It looks like an eyebrow piercing. Hope that helps.

an eyebrow piercing… in.. my eyes?? im talking about the very big black blurry orb but thanks

Can you please take a photo without your piercing…? It could be back flash

  • Wait. I have noticed exactly same thinf in both of my eyes a few days ago, when using a flash please let me know if you find out.

Dude just go to the doctor

  • Call ophthalmologist, when scheduling the appt, say that you have a growing dark spot on your iris that is about 4mm wide. They will likely see you that day.

It only appears when i take a photo with the flash on tho, like i cant see it irl or in the mirror. But i am trying to schedule an appointment

    Call the ophthalmologist.

There is no try, only Frank Oz... See an ophthalmologist, they will have the equipment to see what your camera is seeing.

  • Is it recent? Always in the same spot? Changing shape/size? In any case you should see an eye doctor

Btw this one was takej just now the original was in october

You've been living with this on your eye since October??? So much for early detection is the key...

its only in photos with back camera flash, i just assumed it was because of my camera. its not like i can see it in the mirror or regularly? its not ON My eye in real life

Turn off red-eye correction and take another picture the same way. Rule out a software glitch first.

You need to clarify that in your original post.

i stated that it appears when i take photos with flash, but i understand that i shouldve been more clear

I understood from the get go. No need to be clearer just because some cannot read and comprehend.

You still need to get it checked out, don’t skimp on your health.

It is clear in the post...

It really does look like red eye correction fucked up.

  • Maybe that's the other end ball of your eyebrow piercing? or just a shadow. Doctor will tell you when you get it checked out.

  • Your misshapen pupil. Coloboma?

  • Go look in an actual mirror and see if your fucking pupil is blown out. To me it looks like a reflection of your phone, flash and all, on your eye. Youre welcome.

  • This looks like the automatic red eye correction is messing up.

  • A visit to the eye doctor

  • Highly recommend Dr appt ASAP. My dad is currently going through this and his ocular pressure was through the roof. They had to "drill holes" in his eyes with lasers to get the pressure down, but it basically destroyed the color portion and he has something that looks almost identical. Dr. ASAP. For the sake of your eyesight see a DR.

  • Check your camera settings for red eye correction. If this is only appearing in your camera and is not visible to other people’s eyes while looking directly at your pupil, i’m inclined to believe it’s a camera issue.

  • Why are you asking Reddit and not a medical professional??

  • Have you by any chance taken something called “The Substance” recently?

  • Problem with your iris.

Don’t fuck around see ophthalmologist ASAP, ER if necessary.

  • Looks like an iris coloboma. Assuming that is you lazy eye it add credibility to the coloboma argument.

Without a better picture it's hard to figure out

  • My dog had a black spot like that in her eye and the vet said it was cancer not a dangerouse one lazer surgery removed it. She's fine.

  • Do you see shadows in your vision ever. Specifically if you transfer from a bright environment to a dark one?

  • Looks like a pierced earring thingy

  • Probably caused from driving that nail into your head

  • Cover that thing in your eyebrow and try again. I think the flash is reflecting of fit causing a shadow on your iris.

  • Probably related to the piece of steel in your eyebrow

  • It's called a pupil
