  • I’ve been using Ogallala Bay Rum shave soaps for probably the last ten years. I’m at the end of my current supply and got interested in MdC and went a little nuts ordering samples. They all arrived today and they’re in teeny tiny jars. Wondering what the best way to use these soaps is? Maggard’s website mentions adding the whole sample to a shave cup and using it for a few shaves, but how do I actually do this? Am I to dig out the sample into my cup or is there a “correct” or ideal way of doing this? Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have a solution, but have I got a far more expensive and roundabout one! First, get really into the shaving hobby. Like, just take the plunge. Once you're really into it, you'll feel the need to go to the Maggards Meet Up or the Ohio Wetshavers Meet Up. At either one of those, you're going to want to find u/Impressive_Donut114. He'll have a 3D-printed soap scoop that he made for the Ohio Meet Up. He'll hand you that. Then, when you return home, you'll finally be able to scoop your samples!

This may sound needlessly roundabout, more expensive, and time-consuming. It is. But in the end, will it be worth it? No. But in the end, will you have the best solution to the issue? Also, no. It's no better than a small spoon. BUT in the end, will you have more shaving stuff and possibly a new friend? Yes! And isn't that what life is all about?

Or, you can slide into his DMs and he might send you a spare. 👍

I have a baby spoon from when my kids were... Well babies and use it to scoop what I need.

If you have an empty tub could just scoop into that, push it down and tub load.

Got it, thanks! One of my tiny espresso spoons will work well for this. Watched a couple videos on YouTube also and it made sense of what “pressing” into the cup meant.

  • Has anyone used the Long Rifle after shave tonic? I used the soap a long time ago and it seems they now use wool fat so I'm interested to try it along with their splash. I've had trouble with artisan splashes in the past leaving my skin feeling very tacky or sticky so I'd be interested in getting any input from user experience.

I personally have only had positive experiences with their aftershave tonic. No feelings of stickiness.

I haven’t used theirs but in looking at their ingredients list I get the sense that it might give at least some of that skin feeling you dislike (I’m the same way that I don’t really enjoy that).

  • To all you scuttle latherers out there, what soap do you use when you use your scuttle? For context, I was using Stirling beef tallow base when I first got my scuttle, but I think the heat made the lather unstable. But Noble Otter seems to work well. What works well for y'all?

Same as u/merikus basically any soap I had can scuttle. But try turning the water heat down a bit if you're having issues.

Stirling, I've found is especially prone to that wired false lather where it looks way to thin so you add more soap then it's too much so you add more water... Then it's too thin ...

I find I need to turn off my brain at step one and just add water and stir.

I use my scuttle nearly every shave with every soap I have for at least 8 years. Never had ever problems.

I got Jr_D a scuttle for Christmas and I haven’t scuttled in a long time. What water temp do you find ideal?

I just blast my hot water from the tap and when it’s good and hot I put the scuttle under it, fill the inner and outer bowl, dump it, fill the inner bowl, and shave.
