I love Orient as a brand, unique designs, and their in-house movements, but I don’t understand why they decided to add “Water Resistant” on their dial in many of their divers and non-diver watches. In my humble opinion, it ruins the look that would have otherwise given a premium/luxury vibe. Does anyone else agree or disagree? Please let me know.

The amount of text on luxury watches is actually making me not want to buy them
Join the 2 liner club!
Dont worry they won't sell you till you buy 200 models of watches you do t want and they dont know how to clear stocks of, but you'll pay full price for them and love it, you ll even thank the salesman in the shop and create a parasocial relationship with him , before you can buy the one you want
Yeah, there's that too. I wouldn't bother with the hassle
There should be an option for luxury watches where you provide them a quote to replace all that nonsense - personalized, like novelty m&ms.
This would make watches harder to flip so no one would do it. Breaks the rolex business model
There's nothing meant to be luxurious about a rolex submariner. It's just an expensive item, designed through it's history to be utilitarian. Same as how my Snapon torque wrench isn't luxury. It's just a good tool and costs more than some people want to pay.
Merry Christmas from r/watches where a $10,000 piece of jewelry isn’t a luxury good
A watch in that price bracket is a luxury item for most people
Especially a watch that I dont think objectively performs any better than a quartz watch that is much cheaper
It performs worse than quartz. In every regard.of function any automatic or much animal will be worse than a quartz; hence, the 'quartz crisis' of the 1970s.
People don't buy automatics for their precision over a quartz. I have a citizen quartz that is radio controlled that beats my Speedmaster all day every day in precise timing, but that's not why I own a Speedy
Uhhhhh
I'm a contractor. If I charge more than most to do my job, am I a luxury contractor? No. I charge more because I do a perfect job. Some people need to re-evaluate their definition of expensive vs luxury. They are not the same.
It for sure is luxury nowadays. A much cheaper watch does the actual job much better. For the money you actually get no functionality. An expensive tool gives you more, a luxury tool gives you nothing.
So everything that is not the cheapest possible item is considered luxury in your world? Do you only shop at the dollar store? If you spend more than a dollar on a watch, was it uneccessary waste? Probably not because a watch that cost more than a dollar will last longer amd retain value. Therefore it wasn't a waste, and not a pointless luxury item.
Any dollar that gets me nothing but imaginary things such as brand or status and no actual increase in functionality I feel is luxury. A tool just doesnt cost 10 grand when dudes in the army or something are wearing casios.
Most dudes in the army can't afford a Rolex. Nor do they care about their watch holding financial value based on the quality of it after diving it into the rocks a few thousand times.
Yeah thats… because it isnt a tool watch and instead a luxury item
Stop replying and think about what defines a luxury good. The relative price point. The branding and marketing. The sales network. The scarcity. The packaging. The materials used and options offered.
If you think the only reason Rolex is so expensive is that they are better built than their competitors, then I've got a perfect bridge to sell you
Overpriced useless steel trinket with a big popular brand logo on it is luxury whether you like it or not.
Define "overpriced". You can buy a watch at the dollar store. If you buy one for $20, by your possible definition that's luxury. People need to stop worshipping Rolex like it's a mythical object. They're not that expensive for the category of workmanship they are in. I can buy a new Rolex for less than a week's wages.
Which one that’d be? The one about intricate craftsmanship or the one about wealth and opulence?
I can afford a Rolex after doing just one gig. The fact that you and I and a bunch of other people can afford it without selling a kidney or saving for an eternity doesn’t make it not luxurious. It’s still a piece of wealth-display-jewellery priced in the thousands on ENTRY POINT. Get a reality check my guy
And my point is that because something is quality, doesn't make it luxury. If you want quality, you have to pay for it. Affordability doesn't equate to luxury. My grandfather used to buy 2 bullets at a time for his rifle because they cost so much when wages were so low. Times changed, ammunition is cheaper to produce now. Doesn't mean his bullets were a luxury item to put food on the table.
These days mechanical watches (especially ones that cost over 500$) are jewellery not tools that put food your table lol. What even is this comparison? It can be abysmal dogshit quality for all I care; if it costs in the thousands - it’s fucking LUXURY, my guy.
Its a luxury watch brand, this is a stupid take you have.
Btw, it means absolutely nothing what YOU think.
I come up to the streets, ask a random person to "name a luxury watch brand", 80% of the time, Rolex is leaving their mouth.
Keep yapping all you want, doesnt change the fact that almost everyone perceives Rolex as a luxury brand.... becuase they are.
Yea but Rolex is not that expensive because it’s made that much better. It is a luxury item. Is an LV carry all better than an RTIC duffle? You analogy of contractor is a different thing all together. You charge more because you either do a better job, do t need the work, or are ripping the people off.
The analogy would apply better if actual professional torquing of bolts was now done by a torque computer at 1/20 the cost of your torque wrench, and 99.8% of the people that bought them never tightened anything tighter than 3 ft-lb, if they used them at all.
Yeah if you had a good horse in 1650 it was a professional tool. If you have a good horse in 2025, it's a luxury.
I disagree. Their way of business and marketing is exactly that. I agree that Rolex used to be a utilitarian product; a workhorse - but the price was something completely different then.
It is branded as an exclusive, luxury item today.
Their way of business is to maintain an average of 30 percent profit margin. That's a normal way of doing business.
You’re seriously an odd one for your stance. Whether you like it or not - profit margins or no - Rolex are deliberately bottlenecking their production, promoting their watches as luxury and exclusive items.
There’s genuinely nothing to debate on that.
They're not bottlenecking production. That's a myth perpetuated by too many people watching YouTube videos. I can buy any currently manufactured watch right now.
That’s how the concept of the watch originated. If you look at how Rolex operate and market themselves you’re deluded if you claim it’s not aiming for luxury good - which any economist would define every time they sell as.
Yes very glad my Omega just says

On two lines and that’s it

Creates balance aesthetically though. A fourth subdial would be too much, but imagine blank space there instead. The text is part of the design, not an afterthought
I love it!

That’s so true and something I have never ever understood. Put it in the booklet so we read it once and know, why we have to have it written forever on the dial has never made any sense to me.

The 'advertising billboard" on the rehaait is not only very hard to see unless youre looking, its cool as hell and serves as a anti-counterfit design thats extremely hard to replicate. You people will whine about basically anything Rolex does. Just say you're jealous and move on, jeesh.
Oh no, I like several of their watches, my next one will be an Explorer I in 40mm
I don’t disagree. But, somehow it’s stupidly clean on the dial(s).

Or: X AUTOMATIC 3 DAYS DIVERS 300m
Except it doesn’t look out of place on the Rolexes you mentioned.
It looks grossly unnecessary here
Way to much text on Rolex dials IMO, esp. the Daytona.
At least all of those things are true!
Are you saying “water resistant” is not true? Because it is true. Water resistant does not mean waterproof (which technically no watch is).
Rotary watches can say they are
We are all oyster perpetual on this blessed day.
Because the watch is resistant to water.

At least for the watch in the pic, the “Water Resistant” script serves to give the dial a more balanced aesthetic.
The dial would look a bit ”top heavy” without something at the bottom to add symmetry and balance the brand/logo, and “Water Resistant” is as appropriate as anything else to accomplish this.
I was thinking that too, but if that was the case, why not have “Automatic” placed at the bottom instead of “Water Resistant”? As you have mentioned the pictured watch is already top-heavy with the brand logo and name, so just put “Automatic” at the bottom to balance it out?
I guess for an open heart watch it’s kind of redundant to write “automatic”. They might as well have put “Watch” there in that case.
why? automatic isnt implied by seeing the balance wheel. could also be handwinded
Putting “Watch” in the dial also doesn’t imply it’s not a wall clock or that it is in fact a wrist watch. If you wanted to check if it is automatically wound you could turn your arm 90° and see the pendulum swing by the open heart.
Even if it’s not an open heart you can still turn the watch over and see the “pendulum” moving, so, by your logic any watch with an exhibition caseback shouldn’t have the “AUTOMATIC” text on the dial.
Do you even realise how dumb you are sounding?
I think you missed that they said this because the watch already DOES say automatic, so moving that text would balance it.
Oh right, I completely did.
Well it actually does say automatic. At the top under the logo. Personally I think it'd look better if they removed both and just had the logo and the word orient on the dial. They could move orient to the bottom to balance it out.
It’s old school; old watches were automatic or hand wound, but never water resistance, so that’s a big selling point in the time period that look nice and classic nowadays
I think there's 2 reasons.
The first is that if they're adding the word Automatic it seems to be added form part of their logo like it does on this one.
And the second, this thread would just as easily exist and be retitled

Similar to how Seiko has done with this watch
Because that’s what sister company Seiko does
Because this was scrapped.

Don't be ridiculous. Anything can be a butt plug if you're brave enough.
I’ve heard vintage watches used to do this
Maybe because back then, a watch being water resistant was actually a novelty (I guess), whereas today a watch being 50m water resistant is the bare minimum and nothing to be boastful of
Bambinos are 30m water resistance. Like a C grade student boasting "high school enrolled".
i want one that says "flame resistant" ... would buy that cuz that's more badass
🤣
Wishful thinking
The "Water Resistant" text is there to visually balance the branding at the top. It's also an advertisement of the watch's quality, same as "Automatic" at the top.
So why not move the “Automatic” to the bottom and get rid of the “Water Resistant”
They felt it was worthwhile to have both.
I really hate the "Water resistant" text, so that's why I've got the small seconds dial version

That’s a great looking watch
Moisture is the essence of wetness.
And wetness is the essence of beauty.
It’s merMAN, dad!
100% agree and this is a big reason why I have little interest in most Orients. I don’t mind some text on a watch dial but for me it has to be meaningful to the function of the watch. Why put “Water Resistant” on a dress watch which can’t cope with anything more than a quick splash when washing your hands? It reads as tacky to me. Why not put “Automatic” or just keep it clean?
It definitely is tacky and unnecessary. I was debating between Orient and Seiko as my first automatic, as a gift to myself for graduation, and quite literally the “Water Resistant” design was the reason why I went with Seiko in the end.
It's for balancing the visuals of the graphics (text, logo) and at the same time recalling vintage styling (in the past water tightness was a huge selling point, before that waterproofness was very hard to find in watches, so was clearly stated on the front)
On more modern style watches often is omitted on the dial, apart from diving watches and sportier ones
I think they should’ve put automatic down there instead and not with their logo
100% agree it trashes the watch and no one cares. Valuable real estate could have some more stylish or noting at all.
I have the same exact watch right now on my wrist, and you can barely read what's written in the bottom. It's more for the symmetry on the dial in my opinion and having had this watch for a while now, I think it's absolutely gorgeous!
https://preview.redd.it/ahfl34lz6c9g1.png?width=1008&format=png&auto=webp&s=af2fa2b3679fb3b571853f90bf4d6d03fdfa0ae7
beautiful! I have this same Bambino sans open heart. I didn't know they made it!
Terrible design language
Design choice
They used to say water resist, so take this as an improvement
Definitely unnecessary and threw me off the first time I looked into them, but still love them since getting them on wrist. Definitely more creative design options they can do beyond “water resistant” haha
I believe it does signify some nominal water resistance figure (either 10m or 30m), but so low it could frankly go without mentioning.
It's better than writing water resist which they used to write and Casio does sometimes.
I wish they said something like the model name.
"water resistant" without something like "30M" feels wrong to me even if its a more apt description of the capability of a 30m watch .
The text is part of the design aimed at regular consumers, not watch enthusiasts. People who know watches or Orient specifically already know whatever they need to know about its water resistance, but someone who just wants a nice-looking affordable watch — or wants to get a gift that’s not too pricey for someone — benefits from that text. Otherwise they’ll feel like they have to take the watch off every time they wash their hands. And I like the relatively simple design (minus the open heart), but I think the dial would look a bit boring and bare without that text above the six o’clock marker.
It means this watch try to resist water. As much as it can. Don't judge, it's doing its best, m'key?
It's the reason I got the bambino with additional dials (day of week, 24h) instead of the standard bambino. not a fan of the water resistant text
Possibly because a lot of dress watches don't have water resistance so people take them off while washing their hands. Some people find it nice to wear watches that they don't have to do that.
Seiko epson and their other brands have a thing for excessive text, their sub brand orient is no different.
Seiko ruined many releases by insisting on putting 3 days on the dial to brag about their new movement.
Leaving that area empty probably didn't sit right with whoever designed it, so they printed "Water Resistant" in an effort to add some balance. At least they didn't write "Smoke crack!! WooHooo00o!" That would have been much worse.
Better than the old "water resist"
Resist water ✊
😂
To make it look cool but it’s dumb imo
Because it’s a water resistant watch?
Are these any good? I love the look.
Because it's japanese
if it is water resistant, then we must show that.
The bigger issue to me is the open-heart style face: it always reminds me of a road where a manhole cover has been accidentally left open.
