I feel like the War lasting up until 1881 - 1901 feels ridiculous due to it essentially lasting a full 20 Years while the war in the novel lasts 3 Months.

  • The 1st Marian cylinder wasn’t even launched by 1901, it was a few years into the new century, plus the time taken to travel. I think popular reasoning puts the launch in 1908, with the war (or, The Great Disillusionment, as it was known) starting somewhat later.

  • You have to account the distance between Earth and Mars. While the actual war in the novel was short, it would make sense that the actual arrival of the Cylinder would be much later than somewhere during the early 1880's.

  • Not even close to three months in the novel. More like a few weeks.

Protagonist's attempted journey to London is a day or two-three during which the Martians overrun humanity. Then he gets stuck for a few weeks in a ruin, then he roams around toward london, spends an evening drinking with the Artilleryman and by the time he arrives, the Martians have died.
