Absolutely! I love his story. :) His name is Pike, aka Pikey.
We got him from a shelter during covid. I fell in love with his online story and applied before meeting him.
He was living outside, and was being fed by a nice lady who could see that he was fairly young. She noticed that his ears were boyhering him, so she live-trapped him and took him to a shelter.
Poor boy had ear mites so bad, he shredded one ear (you can see it in the pic). The other ear is permanently scarred. He also has a pellet embedded in his shoulder, so someone took a potshot at some point. Two vets have told me the pellet isn't causing him distress, and they would not recommemd doing surgery just to remove it.
When my vet gave him a checkup, he estimated that Pike was about a year old. He lived at the shelter two months, so he had around ten months on his own before that. Based on his reactions, he was pretty scared for that first year of his life.
We didn't see him for the first couple of weeks he was homevwith us. He gradually showed himself and would talk to us from across the room. He's the most vocal cat I've ever had. He made friends with our eldest cat (an orange tom), and started to harass his new sister (black and white). Then he started letting us pet him on his terms. And then he would allow us to walk up to him to give pets.
Over several months, he revealed his silly, quirky, cheerful, loving self. But he would freak out if we tried to pet him with TWO hands, cuz that was so SCARY. If we walked past him stretched out somewhere, his flight response would kick in. If we bent down to say hello and our faces got too close to his, he would bolt.
He got progressively braver, and started snuggling with me on the couch or with both of us in bed.
He's still scared of two hands if they move fast, because Momma takes him to the vet for manicures. And he doesn't like to get caught to go into the kennel. But that's getting better.
I was happy with how he was, and had accepted that he wouldn't be a lap cat. Then he hopped aboard about ten days ago. Waited three days, and went again. Three days, and then more.
I'm not sure about the three day delay between lap visits. Maybe he's recharging his batteries.
I love him so much. Part of the reason I picked him is because people are weird about black cats. I also wanted to give a chance to a very shy youngster.
He had already made a lot of progress, living in a safe and stable home for five years. This next step just surprised the heck out of me. He has to know what's happening, and usually has an opinion about it. He knows his name and answers to it. He's just the sweetest little companion.
At first, I was always thrown off with his missing ear. But now that's normal to me. The pictures of the two-eared voids get a double-take from me.
So that's Pikey's story. I know every cat has a story, but I'm awfully proud of my boy. :)
Love this for you and Pikey!! Loving a cat is loving them on their own terms, especially one who is not used to being loved. Hoping there are more lap snuggles in your future!
This is my wild boy Chester, a true feral about eight years old. I never imagined he would become such a lap cat. And eventually he slept on me in bed after we talked and he realized I wasn’t dying each night.
Every year my void gets more and more affectionate and needy. It started with him sleeping on the pillow next to me but quickly getting overstimulated by being pet and running away to him sleeping under the blankets little spoon style.
Now he has to have his booty up against me with my arm around him while he sleeps.
It took my girl Holly about 4 years to become a lap cat. She was returned by her original adopters after 3.5 years. She was so scared at the shelter, when I saw her. But she only took a couple of weeks to adjust, once I brought her home. She always asked for attention & pets, but wasn’t keen to sit with me. Cats can always surprise us:). 🐈⬛
My black cat Minnie was a rescue about two years ago and is about four years old now. She does not like to get into a lap at all, but otherwise she’s very friendly.
Ours took a while as well, lol, but their mother was a lap cat from the start. My cat has just started being comfortable with being held despite turning 10 this year.
Ohh so sweet and happy your void took the plunge. Your story made me even happier we took our two 8 week old babies whose mama is feral in. Their mama lives on and below the ladies porch who found our babies. It took about 3 mos for #2 void to accept my lap and I know the proud feeling and after 5 years that’s so cool.
That’s really sweet congrats OP! Sometimes they shock you with “this is fine now” moves like that 😆

Edited due to fat-fingering a few words. Lol.
What a beautiful next chapter in Pikey’s life!!! So so glad he has gained so much trust with you. What a blessing void he is. 🥹🖤

Unfortunately he passed way at age nine.
You made his last years so good! Bless you.

Precious Lap Void Love 💘Pike. We all come around in our own time—and how gratifying when we do. Enjoy one another.
took 3 years to mine to come to my lap, he hates hugs but now he is a cuddle bug.

Love this story 😻

So it took 5 years for the cat to get comfortable enough to sit on your lap?
Yep - he had a tough start. I had been happy with how far he'd come, and this just made it better!
Just took him awhile. Love on him and enjoy!
awesome!
