• The Icelandic government should tell him to not bother showing up.

    💯% send someone else

It’s all women. He’s not gonna listen anyway 💀

    Visa rejected

Americans don’t need a visa to visit Iceland.

  • Not fucking funny, Mr. Ambassador.

As an American who has visited Iceland twice in the last two years, my personal apologies for the shitshow that our country has become.

Agreed. It is just so embarrassing.

I agree though I have only gone once.

As an American and former Icelandic tourist, let me just say.....Fuck That Clown.

Do something about it. You all sit back and let that cretin in the Oval Office wreck the world. We’re all waiting for you to act. The rest of the planet is very rapidly losing its patience.

You don't understand how US politics works. There is literally nothing that can be done at the federal level until midterms in November.

Every single American of voting age can be reaching out to their elected officials at both the federal and state levels on a weekly basis. They track those calls and emails from constituents, and if there's an uptick in voter outrage with midterm elections around the corner, they are definitely listening. 5 Republican senators broke with the ranks recently and voted with the Dems. More elected Republican officials need to be reminded that they have abdicated their power and integrity and that voters demand more from them.

People have been trying that for a year now. The constituents of those Republicans want this.

5 Republican senators broke with the ranks recently and voted with the Dems.

They only voted to advance legislation not actually pass it. And even if it does pass it's unlikely to pass in the House. It's grandstanding.

Reaching out to one's elected officials isn't a one and done thing to do. It's continual pressure and reminders that their constituents are holding them to account.

Less than 20 Republican Congresspeople are true MAGA. The rest can be swayed, but it takes public and constituent pressure and reminders that they'll be voted out if they don't get their act together.

Don't whine to us that it's futile, whine to your elected officials that they're being dangerously useless. Tell them to shine up their spine, be on the (small "r") right side of history, and stand up to Trump - before its too late.

Stop the condescension. There is a fascist cretin in the White House and he doesn't give a shit about democratic elections. He's got militias trampling on the Constitution arresting and killing citizens and you're talking about not being able to do shit until the mid-terms?

Americans always brag about having guns. Some tyrant has taken over the country but the concept of civil unrest apparently doesn't hit them.

Genuinely, what would you do if you were here? What steps would you take? Are you trying to say that people should start armed violence? If so, how, and against whom are you implying we should carry it out? Would you be willing to pull the trigger like you’re asking all of us to do? It’s not that simple or easy.

I volunteer, I’m part of community action networks, I protest regularly, I petition my elected officials, I’ve knocked on doors and talked to people, I do what I can to have the backs of trans folks and immigrants and others that are being targeted in my community. ICE literally just got to my city yesterday and I’m planning on spending my weekend thwarting them and documenting as much as possible. What more can I do?

I see so many people (fairly) screaming at Americans to do something, but what would you have us do? We feel desperate too. I literally don’t know what more I can do. What would you do?

I am here. I live in the U.S. There is a lot you can do, and someone else gave a list.

(I am originally from a country that endured a fascist regime. I heard the stories first hand. Americans need to fight now.)

You fight on two fronts: what you are already doing for at-risk communities. And then you organize for the worse. There are actions one can take. The CIA published a 1944 field guide to sabotage which feels wildly irrelevant until you adapt it for current times and technogies. ICE raids a neighborhood? Some folks will start blocking streets with vehicles or dumpsters. Some will drop caltrops on the roads. Some will blare music and horns at night in the hotels they stay at. Some will call in threats.

There are people out there organizing. Not all of it is legal. They are playing by different rules, because this administration is not either.

This is coming primarily from Europeans where far right governments are also taking over. They are advocating for political violence online but are watching the same stuff happen to them and their neighbors without actually doing anything about it. It's all grandstanding to make themselves feel better.

Civil unrest like a 5M person protest in June? Again, you don't understand US politics.

    Maybe stop being civil?

Political action is more than the ballot box.

There was a protest in June with 5M people. It didn't do shit.

Political action is more than protests.

Name them instead of vague posting then. I guarantee you people in the US have already tried them (including political violence).

Political action is more than providing a list of political actions

Then more people need to do them. When people sit back and ask how the liberal Germany of '29 ended up as the Germany of '39 and why no one did nothing... this is the nothing that was done.

A brief list of possible actions:

    *Harass elected officials

    *Economic boycotts

    *Non-violent civil disobedience

*Running for local, state or municipal office and refusing to implement the regime

    *Supporting litigations against the regime

*Arming and train yourselves into an organised militia

*Attending public meetings and vocalise opposition

    *Support independent journalism

*Participating in labour or general strikes

"Direct action and mutual aid networks

Your enemy has done all this, why not you? They subvert the state, subvert legal processes, march on the capitol, weaponise prosecutions, murder you in the street.

You think they will simply concede elections if they believe civil society won't substantially oppose them afterwards? Every red line and every safeguard is crossed and crossed again and yet most Americans seem happy to watch. You got 5 million out once. Do it again, and again, and again.

Every single of those actions has been done in the US in the last year.

I never said no one was doing them; but not enough. History will remember them as brave, to the rest - the majority - history will remember them as they are.

    Als sie kamen

So much of this is already happening. For example, Hilton’s stock has plummeted from the boycotts due to their involvement with ICE. We’ve had protests. People call our congressmen daily. I never watch MSM. The Trump administration has been sued relentlessly, but it’s like playing whack-a-mole with all of the shit they are doing. When they have control of all branches of government, they’ve eliminated our checks and balances, and our democratic leadership refuses to be more aggressive in their actions, I don’t know what else to do. I’m so fricken tired of hearing “do something”. Don’t you think if we could, we would??? This was a coup. The election was rigged (Trump and Musk admitted it), and all future elections will also be rigged as long as this regime is in charge.

I was there. That's not what civil unrest is about.

  • As an American, I want Iceland to take over America.

We tried once, met some mean looking dudes and decided against it. Went for Greenland instead, funny how that goes.

  • Can that asshole not screw it up for us respectable Americans who like visiting other places? Have plans to visit this summer, would like to actually be able to go.

Absolutely embarrassing being American right now.

I agree, my honeymoon is currently planned for this upcoming summer and I'd like to enjoy the beginning of my marriage. Not be ashamed of where I come from or be shunned because of these clowns in charge.

Same here except we’re going in February. Gotta travel with my bag of shame, per my passport, now, because of this fuckwad and all his goons.

  • Why are American politicians such fucking idiots? Can they truly not see they have utterly cratered their country’s reputation and standing - forever?!

  • I guessed this would happen after threatening Canada & Greenland. They are power hungry for Arctic land and natural resources. “Elbows Up” Iceland. From 🇨🇦

  • I go to Iceland to get away from this 💩🤦‍♀️ I hope the Icelandic people chase this guy out of their country.

  • When Trump started talking about taking Greenland, I told my wife that Iceland was next. Island country that exists in the shadow of Greenland that’s halfway between Europe and America. If Trump actually takes over Greenland, I can’t imagine he’ll let Iceland remain independent. They have no standing army and Trump always looks for an easy fight.

  • Americans typing out an apology over how embarrassed and sorry they are that their country is fucking over the world is so exhausting. We don't want you to apologize, or say how embarrassed you are, we want you to organize within your communities, and change how your country operates.

    Sincerely,
A Canadian who has also had their sovereignty 'joked' about

we want you to organize within your communities, and change how your country operates.

There was a 5M person protest in June. The next time we can change how the country operates is 10 months from now. It's just as exhausting to see people say "fix your country" but have no understanding of how it operates.

Protesting isn't the same as organizing. Protesting is known as 'mobilizing'. It can be effective, but in a vacuum, it changes little as you point out. Political action and organizing exists in our communities, in our workplaces, in our places of worship, etc. You can't vote out fascism. You have to organize against it and build legitimate working class power.

I understand that the US public's political power has been reduced to voting in mid-terms and presidential elections. I'm advocating for fighting in a much broader sense. I promise you that throughout history, the people who have overthrown an oppressive government, did so outside of the ballot box and outside of a couple protests.

We understand how your country works. We're imploring you to fight back, instead of throwing up your hands and waiting for the next election (if you get one).

I promise you that throughout history, the people who have overthrown an oppressive government, did so outside of the ballot box and outside of a couple protests.

So you're advocating for political violence?

Historically, it has taken less than 5% of the population committing to a work stoppage / general strike to create significant legislative change. Non-violent action.

The workers hold the power, if enough of them are willing to use it.

You're inferring that, I didn't say it, and I was speaking in a much broader sense than what you're drilling down to. Fighting back doesn't only exist within the confines of violence. But if you're asking whether I believe oppressed people have the right to resist their oppressors by any means necessary, yes I do, and so does international law. Your 2nd amendment also believes you have this right

Anyway, I'm not going to spend any more time arguing with you. The American people are not as powerless as you are portraying them. There is still hope, and a brighter future is possible, if people are willing to fight for it.

You should understand that in a political world where violence is used to remove a political party it gets used against the parties you advocate for as well. There are hundreds if not thousands of examples of that throughout history and even in the world today. That is not the kind of "democracy" that you are hoping for but the one you're advocating for.

Right??? Americans can't easily overthrow the biggest military in the world to get through to the politicians. This would cost millions of lives.

Canadians won't even overthrow their own govt with a military 1/20th the size to fix their own poverty, housing, etc issues so this is some pretty big Keyboard Warrior talk

They also literally almost lost their government to the far right last year. The conservative party there owns 41% of the seats compared to 44% for the liberal party.

  • Canadian here. Careful, Iceland. It started as a joke for us too. Even conservative US news outlets didn’t take it seriously at first.

  • Our « president » « joked » about wanting to be a dictator. He wasn’t joking. I wish such statements wouldn’t be labeled as jokes when it’s clear they’re deadly serious statements

  • Damn sounds like most U.S. ambassadors are complete assholes. We have our own dickhead we're dealing with in Canada. Sorry Icebros

  • Billy Long is from Missouri. We hate him here in St. Louis. Sorry, Iceland.

  • if they ruin me traveling to Iceland one day i STG

  • Then he has no right coming here.

  • Why does EVERYONE in this administration have to be a psychopathic asshole?!?

  • American here. We do not endorse this. Iceland is the most fantastic place I have ever had the privilege to visit. On behalf of my country, I apologize for the absolute buffoonery on display lately.

  • Ban Americans from entering other countries.

  • American here...he's not joking!

Im sorry Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and the rest of the world.

    I am embarrassed!

  • I’m.so.Sorry.

At this stage apologies from ‘normal’ Americans are becoming useless. I get there’s 1/3 of you that are decent but 2/3’s either love it or don’t care. The damage done by Trump is generational and won’t be forgotten by law abiding countries.

Personally I’ve written the US off as a destination o travel to,it’s in the same basket as Russia, UAE and Israel. I’ve lots of family there, and they are on both sides of the fence so it’s sad to see how politics is tearing America apart.

  • As an American who has visited Iceland twice (Aug 2022 and Jan 2023) and absolutely loved it (and would like to return someday), I apologize.

    Zev

  • We have a population where everyone is fluent in English. Most people have been to the USA more than once. We could integrate easily. Yet it would surprise me if more than 5% would want to be Americans. Soo I like the self deprecating humor, especially since the first step to recovery is recognizing that there is something wrong. It bodes well that the ambassador finds it funny that a well developed society would consider joining. I hope that one day the USA regain their former dignity and this won't be a joke.

  • Clown show. Iceland is the way it is because of minimal American influence

Iceland is the way it is because of minimal American influence

Not to discourage the sentiment, but Iceland was dragged kicking and screaming into modernity by the American martial aid and infrastructure projects following WW2 and entering the cold war.

Iceland is under quite a lot of cultural influence from the US, and while of course very different it's hard to say we've been under 'minimal influence'.

Don't want them to be joking about our sovereignty regardless of that, of course.

Yes. That’s of course when you don’t factor in massive American influence both politically and culturally present in Iceland. Lol

  • I am disappointed with the current regime of my country and hope that Iceland takes it semi-seriously.

  • Not a single American wants this. Even MAGA is America focused, not foreign conquest, and at this pt are asking "WTF?!?". Foreign aide is a hot debate... foreign takeover isn't wanted by anyone. This is purely our politicians going off the f-cking rails and we sincerely apologize.

    Many MAGA idiots want this.

  • Can the administration wait until after my trip in April? /s

  • A former IRS employee, our government probably loves this guy it loves creating taxes and collecting taxes.

  • I just want to point out that us american clowns sometimes get greenland and iceland confused.
