Hello Redditors!

This is going to be my and my husband's first trip to Iceland. We're planning to go on the first week of March for 4 days (including travel days) from the UK and we are not renting a car.

Our wishlist are:

- Aurora tour

- Golden Circle + Blue Lagoon

- National Museum and maybe Lava Show (is it good?)

- Ice Cave tour

I really want to go on an ice cave tour and browsing GetYourGuide, I only found two type ice cave tours. Both of them is from Reykjavik with bus transport with but one is to a "nearby" cave and the other is to Katla. The nearby one is about £100- £120 and shorter (3hrs) but some of the reviews said that they were taken to a small cave's entrance to take some pics for 30-45mins and went back. The Katla one is nearly £200 and longer (11hrs), but most of the reviews said they were actually taken for a hike and cave exploration.

My question is, is it worth it taking any of the ice tour given that we want to do other things listed above? Or is it better to do it on a longer trip with a car?

Thanks!

  • We did the Katla ice cave tour last summer and thought it was spectacular. We learned a lot about the geologic history and make-up of the area, hiked on top of a glacier, went off roading in essentially an all-terrain school bus, and ultimately got to hike inside of said glacier. It was one of the highlights of a ln already spectacular trip.

Did you take a tour from Reykjavik or drove there and joinned the tour from Katla?

We had rented a car and drove to Vik for the tour. You can take advantage of being on the south side of the island and see some amazing sights on Route 1 (iconic waterfalls, black sand beaches). You can even jaunt up to Geysir on the way to Vik or back without adding too much extra time.

How did you access the ice cave? If you took a tour, would you recommend the company?

  • only you can decide how you want to spend your time. Personally, I'd value seeing an ice cave or hiking a glacier over the national museum. And yes the Lava Show is great.

  • i did both katla cave and lava show with the family. we did the cave from Vik. lava show was good. I would say more for the kids but it was good. ice cave was amazing and I’m doing it again in a few weeks on a guys trip. The other guy’s havent been and were like are you sure you want to do it again. the answer was YES.
