That picture is too zoomed out for me to accurately see what is going on there.
But as a knitter I say you can definitely make a new edge by crocheting. I’m not sure if there’s only one free loop where the yarn came loose, but you want to make sure you secure all the loose loops by crocheting through them. That will make sure that the stitch won’t drop further down.
I had a sweater that started coming apart like this (I did make it 'worse' by removing elastic thread) - look up a sewn bind-off in knitting, or a crocheted bind-off (this will preserve the stretch better than sewing) - you essentially want to re-finish the edge. If you do it in slightly different (or very) colour yarn, it might be fun :)

For now it's only the one stitch that is loose, but it's only a matter of time because the seam all around is really thin worn out

It looks like they just threaded some yarn through the stitches. Which way does the knit go?

It's knit up from the edge. Iirc it's a tubular cast on?
