• Or, we could codify that data/AI warehouses must install either small scale nuclear or enough solar at each location to become net producers of power.

If we’re gonna have more of them than any other state they should at least provide a tangible benefit by strengthening our grid and lowering our power bills.

Colocating either resource with datacenters doesn’t make any sense because it drastically increases the land use requirements in locations which aren’t necessarily suited for them

SMRs have not only not been deployed, a single project has not even put concrete in the ground. Timelines for the first SMRs are in the early to mid 2030s and those are optimistic projections

Protecting ratepayers from data center load is going to be a massive challenge and you should push your legislators on it but it’s not at all a simple problem to solve

It’s a fairly simple problem to solve for companies with valuations in the trillions.

The problem is you need to add new power supply to accommodate the load, new transmission to deliver it, market structures to incentivize it, and get it done in the next few years. You’re rapidly entering into a problem defined by permitting and PJM’s inherent limitations, not just money.

Here is actually a good comment with some examples of what could change to protect ratepayers

I think it’s important to not oversimplify the issue because ultimately our legislators probably don’t understand it either and we don’t them rubber stamping some dominion driven decision that doesn’t ultimately add new clean generation to our grid

That is hilariously costly. Just require them to pay margin above residential for the extra supply, keeping residential prices low.

  • I co-sign u/I_Stabbed_Jon_Snow idea, wanna see what the regulation will be with these data centers.

  • Annnnd there we go. Not an hour ago they were in here talking about focusing on affordability. There goes that.

    We're a blue state now.

Affordability is a thing of the past.

Bro, Republicans have destroyed the economy every single time they are put in charge of it for over 40 years now.

No point in arguing with them, they refuse to even try understanding. They are confidently incorrect and extremely stubborn people.

This is true. At least for the average person. For the wealthy maybe it's better to have recessions for instance.

Neither party can be said to have “destroyed the economy” in the way you’re talking. This hyper-partisan cheerleading is so tiresome.

Trump has made the economy worse from where Biden had it, where things had been finally trending in a healthier direction. That's inarguable. Inflation went from over 3% (Biden had it approaching the magical 2%) to 2.9 because payrolls have dipped. On top of the job losses. That's Trumpism economics for ya.

Virginia was outside the top 5 in business in recent ranking. Unheard of. Republican policy again not working.

Oh yeah, Republicans were right about to fix that up for you huh?
