Hi all.

I'm looking for the best solution of the noise reduction in my camper conversion Volkswagen Transporter T6 swb.

The main goal is to insulate the van from the noise that comes from the outside when I'm parked near the highway and nearby there are trucks with working engines.

So, I need to insulate mostly my walls.

I'm thinking to glue the XPE (X-linked Polyethylene Expansion) mats on the metal case (for thermal insulation mainly) and on those mats to hang somehow MLV (mass loaded vinyl).

Or maybe it is ok to put something like synthetic felt instead of MLV (or additional to it)

But the case of the car has ribs. And I'm NOT going to put XPE + MLV on the ribs, because it will eat the space. So, the material will be located between the ribs. On the ribs I will put 3 mm XPE and the attache the decoration panels (wood)

I know the noise will still go through the ribs. But.. does it mean the sound insulation effect is totally low or it still worth to do it?

I don't care the sound while I'm driving at all.

  • you need ventilation, which lets noise in.

use earplugs. I use the silicone putty for swimming, split the blobs in half and put it semi loosely in each ear.

my ventilation will be on the roof and in the floor. not on the walls

Noise comes from all areas, not just the walls

and how significant is this noise? when i try to speak with somebody through the closed door in the toilet i need to speak louder, so it has some effect

Stand around the corner of a brick wall from the street, about 4 feet away from the corner. That is what the traffic will sound like coming through your vents compared to standing outside if your van was as dense as a brick wall. It's not worth trying to insulate noise beyond the convenient side effects of thermal insulation.

Standing behind the corner of wall and standing behind the hole closed with the gap in the wall are far not the same. Also there are difference between sound insulation and absorption

    Yes. From all around.

  • To be honest, forget it. Nothing will work, this is not a house. We live in a dedicated motorhome and while temp insulation is pretty good, sound insulation is minimal at best. You will have to get used to it, or park in quieter environments.

  • Not what you want to hear, but get a diesel heater and use it as white noise generator /s...maybe?

  • Try to get rid of the single sheet layers by making them a sandwich of aluminum butyl and Armaflex. The butyl stuff adds weight to the thin sheet metal making it harder to vibrate in higher frequency. The Armaflex will dampen this a bit further while heatinsulating the van.

Other than that theres not much you can do.

Large thin sheetmetal will always be like a passive speaker chassis and will be transporting sound by resonance.

  • arguments please!!

i also can say it will work. because you will definitely hear less noise even if you stay behind the wall in the open field

my question is - how much will it add

  • Earplugs. Good ones. The mods won't work well.

  • This person thinks they’re gonna be right. They ask for advice but won’t listen. Let them insulate for sound and still have to open for ventilation. lol. I guess they don’t think sound will travel through any openings.
