I actually had a similar Toshiba DVD/VHS combo unit that I recieved for Christmas back in 2013. But it partially died back around 2015/2016.
What happened was while it rewound and fast fowarded fine in play mode, but in stop mode, when I attempted to do either the machine would get stuck and power down and as a result, three of my tapes ended up getting mangled in the process. But luckily the tapes that were mangled weren’t rare tapes so I was able to replace them easily later.
As for the Toshiba, I’ve since replaced it with a Sony DVD/VHS combo unit that I got back in the summer of 2016 and it’s working reliably for me ever since.
