I have noticed a new trend that people are putting lights like these on the backs of their trucks and leaving them on while driving. Ive seen them below the bumper and up high. They are useful when hooking up a trailer or something when it’s dark; assholes will be assholes .
most of them do. these look like aftermarket ones the asshole installed. I've followed a few people with these on their cars/trucks and it is completely blinding at night
Yes it’s illegal to have those lights on while driving.
They are used to see behind you better, fairly common with off-roading. The guy probably accidentally hit the power switch for the lights and doesn’t know they are on.
It looks like it could be the same truck as I got stuck behind once at night—totally blinding and unsafe—I got a picture of plates and called it into police and it apparently didn’t matter.
Not a plan for everybody but I personally would start to follow them, get on the line with 911 and say "I am following a person who has repeatedly been blinding people with blindingly bright lights facing the drivers behind him. He has been reported before but nothing was done. Please send somebody to intercept. I will stay on the line to provide updates on his location".
I was once clipped in a hit and run
From past experience I knew the cops wouldn't do anything with the call so I followed them for 3 miles of urban streets, keeping the cops on the phone the whole time. Eventually the car pulled up to a house and the driver sprinted inside. Still on the line with the cops in updated them and about two minutes later a cop rolls up. Takes my statement, gets pictures of the minor damage and knocks on the door of the house. A couple of minutes later cop tells me the driver admitted to the hit and run (she thought she missed me and couldn't hear the impact over the radio), they'd take it from there and I was free to go.
I am a disabled person who only occasionally drives. Driving and operating a phone at the same time is illegal. Also, someone already posted that they took a picture of the plates and reported it.
Again. Someone already called and nothing was done.
Does no one understand that this post isn't so much about complaining, but making people aware?
Remember that terrible hit and run between a motorcycle and a cyber truck? How we all came together and finally found it?
The more people who are aware, the more likely they will get caught due to more complaints to the police. Hopefully someone who saw this post is one of the people who file a report. It's a 50/50 shot. Rather that then everyone doing nothing. 🙄
Saw something like this while driving at night and nearly shit myself. I thought it was a wrong way driver and swerved into the pullout lane before realizing they were getting further away. Spooky stuff 😕
Funny how many of us have been behind this person, I remember them from a few months ago, I dont normally have road rage but this absolutely made me furious
I am submitting this formal complaint to the Utah Highway Patrol regarding a recurring and dangerous issue on Utah highways: vehicles operating with extremely bright, rear‑facing white lights, often mounted on trucks or off‑road vehicles, and UHP patrol units failing to take enforcement action even when directly behind or beside these vehicles.
These lights create a blinding hazard for drivers following behind, especially at night or in low‑visibility conditions. The danger is immediate, obvious, and well‑documented by motorists across the state.
Relevant Utah Law
Under Utah Code § 41‑6a‑1604, all lamps mounted on the rear of a vehicle must display or reflect a red color, except for turn signals or hazard lights which may be red or yellow.
White rear‑facing lamps — other than the reverse lamp when the vehicle is actively backing — are not permitted.
Despite this clear statutory requirement, I have repeatedly observed UHP patrol vehicles following or passing these violators without taking action, even when the illegal lighting is glaringly obvious and directly impairing the visibility of surrounding drivers.
Documented Incidents
Below is a list of specific occurrences where UHP patrol units were present but did not intervene:

Requested Action
I respectfully request that UHP:
Issue a statewide directive reminding troopers that rear‑facing white lights (other than reverse lamps) violate § 41‑6a‑1604.
Increase enforcement against vehicles operating with high‑intensity rear‑facing lights.
Review the conduct of the patrol units listed above to determine why no enforcement action was taken.
Provide a written response outlining corrective steps UHP intends to take.
This issue poses a serious and unnecessary risk to Utah motorists. Enforcement of existing law would immediately improve roadway safety.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,

I would call 911 and give them vehicle description, direction of travel and mile marker etc.. nothing will happen to these morons if people don’t call these things in.
Because the UHP refuses to do their job. They’re only interested in pulling over commuters on VERY busy highways (except for the zig-zaggers and tailgaters). Call it in, make them do their job.
I have to agree with them. 911 should only be used for an emergency. This IS dangerous, but it's not an emergency yet.
We need to be judicious about calling 911. It makes all the difference for someone who is severely injured/having a baby/a large object in the road, etc.
No one is hurt yet. It sounds shitty to say and counterintuitive, but it's the fact of the matter. Now that this is on more people's radar, hopefully people will continue to make reports age force UHP's hand. That's all we can do.
Do you expect the police or highway patrol to respond with lights and sirens? No matter how scary this is to you and you don't want to back off so the lights don't bother you, this isn't an emergency.
Not saying it's an emergency worth calling 911. Simply pointing out it's a hazard that needs to be reported, same as debris falling out of a car. People need to be held responsible on the roads
You are wrong. Any 911 dispatcher or police officer will tell you that something like this could cause crashes. Anything that could cause a crash should be called in to 911. Preventing an emergency is just as much 911 worthy as reporting an ongoing one.
I've seen this multiple times myself on different cars and trucks. And I will be willing to bet at least half the time it's a case of a complete moron modified either on purpose or accidentally the wiring of the car.
Some guy had a lifted truck with his light bar on at eye level in the middle of the day. If it's nighttime and deer are out I get it. But daytime you just look like a fool.
Dude, this same guy pulled onto 215 from 3300 right in front of me last week, they are some bright lights. I flashed him several times with my own off road lights and he obviously didn’t get the meaning. He was hauling ass too.
Seeing others saying the had seen the same guy encouraged me enough to go through the effort of actually taking out the SD card and going through my dash cam footage (older unit without wireless phone connection). The lights seem to mess with the camera enough the plate never looks like it’s in focus.
Wonder if it's the same guy I saw last year lol. These can be used for construction, and sometimes they forget they're on. But these were bright AF and kept blinding me while driving in the middle of the day
I SAW THIS TRUCK YESTERDAY. In the north Salt Lake area on the 215. I said “what an asshole” and wondered how the hell those vehicles don’t get pulled over
these are illegal
I have noticed a new trend that people are putting lights like these on the backs of their trucks and leaving them on while driving. Ive seen them below the bumper and up high. They are useful when hooking up a trailer or something when it’s dark; assholes will be assholes .
It's horrible and totally illegal to drive around with them on. Helpful for hooking up a trailer for sure but driving with them on is terrible.
I have a Tacoma that came with factory rear facing lights. It beeps at me if I drive around with them on… to remind me to not be an asshole.
most of them do. these look like aftermarket ones the asshole installed. I've followed a few people with these on their cars/trucks and it is completely blinding at night

I doubt that. I have been behind this guy before. They're on every time.
Then call UHP or your local police.
It looks like it could be the same truck as I got stuck behind once at night—totally blinding and unsafe—I got a picture of plates and called it into police and it apparently didn’t matter.

Can call on the plate because he’s blinded by the light 🎶
Seriously, why go to reddit first?
Because I can't see the plates that well and they live somewhere in the area where I am roughly. What do you want me to do track them down?
Yes track them down John Wick style
You call. Provide a description and location. And if you can, speed the fuck up to get a plate.
Not difficult. It’s simply adulting at its most basic.
I am a disabled person who only occasionally drives. Driving and operating a phone at the same time is illegal. Also, someone already posted that they took a picture of the plates and reported it.
You can use your phone to call 911/an emergency/the police.
Can’t call 911 when they are busy using a camera (while driving).
Again. Someone already called and nothing was done.

And if everyone calls there’s a chance something gets done. Hoping someone rides calls it in is idiotic and guarantees nothing will happen.
If you're that concerned about illegal activity, yes! Alternatively, pass that fucker and get a video of the plate
Someone already replied that they took a picture of the plates and reported it.
“Hey UHP there’s this guy with lights on! Behind his truck! Please stop him!!!”
We have laws for a reason.
https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6A/41-6a-S1612.html
Rearward facing white lamps are legal but can’t be lit when traveling forward.
I agree, I just don’t think the UHP cares, especially if you call and report. I see illegal car setups daily
The very white and bright LED headlights are illegal and they do jack shit about them for example.
Really, that same exact guy?
I have lights just like that on my truck but I wired them into my reverse wire so they only come on when I’m going backward
I did the same to my buddies car, but instead of those lights, it's his horn and the windshield wipers
That is evil. And hilarious. Good job.
Without consequences there is no law. See also lift kits, mud flaps, coal rollers, expired tags/dealer plates, etc.
They are designed for hitching up trailers, and work great for what they are designed for. You are not supposed to leave them on while driving.
Saw something like this while driving at night and nearly shit myself. I thought it was a wrong way driver and swerved into the pullout lane before realizing they were getting further away. Spooky stuff 😕
It seems to be the new truck bro thing to do. I see it a lot out here in South Jordan
White bois desperate for attention.
I’m sure there’s a MAGA sticker somewhere on the truck

Good effort, that's what a normal person would do. It is easier to post a meaningless rant on reddit.
You are living in 1980. May as well fax it to them.
The power is at the bottom
I would call 911 and give them vehicle description, direction of travel and mile marker etc.. nothing will happen to these morons if people don’t call these things in.
They drove right past a Highway Patrol car parked on the side of 215 and were not pulled over.
Because the UHP refuses to do their job. They’re only interested in pulling over commuters on VERY busy highways (except for the zig-zaggers and tailgaters). Call it in, make them do their job.
please don't clog emergency lines with this. call the sheriff's department non emergency line and speak with them
Emergency lines are what this is for, they will transfer you to UHP dispatch.
That isn't a 911 emergency. No one's life is immediately in danger.
That's a blinding hazard on a freeway. Someone can definitely crash
I have to agree with them. 911 should only be used for an emergency. This IS dangerous, but it's not an emergency yet.

Correct. It can be worth calling in but it isn't 911 worthy.

Um. Yes it actually is.
if you think this is the most dangerous thing on 215 then you haven’t been driving recently
The modern excruciatingly bright headlights theae days should also be illegal.
It appears you came across someone whose parents are siblings.
☠️
Illegal AF.
Of course it’s a truck
I've seen this multiple times myself on different cars and trucks. And I will be willing to bet at least half the time it's a case of a complete moron modified either on purpose or accidentally the wiring of the car.

Huh. I wonder if that's part of the reason why? If that possibly messes with plate readers.
I have no clue, just a thought.

There's a solution to these bright lights no one seems to be talking about.
I saw that on another vehicle while driving the other night, scared the shit out of me lol
Wonder if it's the same guy I saw last year lol. These can be used for construction, and sometimes they forget they're on. But these were bright AF and kept blinding me while driving in the middle of the day

When driving with high beams on at all times isn't enough...
There are some lights people are putting on their license plate areas to blind out the plate, I saw some video on IG or fb the other day.
I SAW THIS TRUCK YESTERDAY. In the north Salt Lake area on the 215. I said “what an asshole” and wondered how the hell those vehicles don’t get pulled over
Follow him, wait for him to park and leave the vehicle and then ”fix” those lights with a hammer. Problem solved.
Low on blinker fluid
Thanks I hate it
wow, we're so glad you and your moderator were apprised of this vicious crime. Thanks Reddit!
This looks like NSL. Was this by chance taken here?
Yes!
They’re called fuck you lights. Illegal but it’s always…they’re for hitching trailers and I didn’t know they were on.
Wait. Are you the owner of the truck? 🤨
It is their backup lights. Something failed in the circuit that turns the lights on.
I don’t think that model has back up lights at the bumper, They have to be aftermarket, to piss ppl off that drive too close.
No, they are added LED lights. And the morons turn them on to be assholes.
