Nah man that's gatekeeping bs. Everyone starts somewhere and going with experienced people is literally the best way to learn. Just don't be the guy who posts everything on social media after
Focus on learning the tunnels. The basics etc. Tracks, headway…what’s changed. When track work occurs…what to look for with workers, undercover cops, etc…..ride the lines you wanna check and form a plan. Back when we stayed for hours in a spot. Toss a trash bag and see if detectors did anything….
Going alone means you know what you are doing. Despite its own dangers that I’m sure the urbex community would say. But for me, in my experience- tunnels are different. Those that do know the inherent elevated dangers of subways…. but are so keen to do the practice the right way, that it eschews traditional thought of “wow, urbex is cool but this is stupid.” You can’t be stupid if you do everything the right way 200% of the time.
To give you a specific example: a relatively well known spot got …what the kids say: “patched” . I haven’t gone to this spot (but hey, there’s numerous locations) since but…eh. The spot was blown TF up. it was a nice spot too , not even shown on maps. People post very revealing aspects of how to get to spots when they traditionally been passed down or found on own.
I hate going with groups and really prefer only one other if I do.
If you have not done any further academic research:
-The routes not taken (book) . Learn ya history….it dives you into the fun stuff.
-utilize track maps . Certain ones showcase every spot.
-Colombia edu’s pages have been generally helpful
-Steve Duncan’s original video is old, but essentially highlights decent practice for you to do further research (ex, security...potential issues). A love letter now to older times I suppose.
There are blogs dedicated by NYC urbex groups that are known tunnel runners. One known blogger even comments some great knowledge on FB groups. Weird saying it - they pass on many levels like Steve does when it comes to showing themselves openly. Though to be fair it’s been awhile since they ran.
No face no case until you know you are clear down the line…. No tattoos showing. Don’t post for clout in the way these braindead teens from queens / bklyn doing…..
Before you even go. Learn. This shit has changed radically.
Vet the people you wanna be with heavily. You never know if they get pinched and snitch on you. Run with trusted heads. That’s why I go alone most of the time unless someone proves themselves.
To be a tunnel Jedi you have to walk the padawan path first. Tunnels are the apex predator of urban exploration.
I agree with you, I like to usually be alone when exploring but i really dont mind having just 1 other. Specially for me since i make content about it having one more person with me would be good for a second perspective, but a group will make filming the location difficult because every one is talking and saying what they see. Ive been to a few tunnels in the past few months, here in Pennsylvania we have the Abandoned Turn Pike and its really long. I walked the entire thing ALONE, with my camera and a flash light. it was pretty scary!
Hey buddy im an experienced explorer, I go by "Tee Will Explore" on YouTube, you can check out my explorations there. Ive been looking for an explroring buddy! I live in the Philadelphia area but willing to travel to you or we can meet half way and use my car or your car and go to interesting places to explore. Even if we do it once a month im cool with that. Check out my channel and DM me if you want to do this! im down!
If you’re under 21, haven’t even done basic research about subways….Don’t.
