Okay i live in a rual area-very wooded and a lot of rundown-abandoned buildings that I explore; I know which houses are occupied and which aren’t but sometimes the houses that are occupied looks very similar in condition to thoes of abandoned ones and it has me thinking: how do people know which areas are and which areas aren’t abandoned?

  • I was trying to break into an abandoned school out in the mountains of Arizona when a kid walked out a nearby door with his backpack. I silently but quickly started walking away.

There were bushes growing in the parking lot. That school needs FUNDING. And security apparently, nobody noticed me wandering around trying doors and windows (thankfully).

that little boy died in 1967

😂 that explains a lot actually

  • No because I never break in, period. If I can't just walk in without having to damage a door or something then I don't get in.

Yeah same here, if it's locked up tight then it's probably not meant for randos wandering through anyway

  • Man I have indeed accidentally broke into an apartment

    😭yikesss

I didn’t break in I found my way inside but same thing?

kinda. but now i wanna hear the story

Well I was trying to hit an untouched church and usually the rectoctory next door has a way inside connected to the church so we tried finding our way into there. We brought down the fire escape walked up the stairs, and there was a tiny window. We open the window which had screen for bugs we slid that up and entered. Once inside I entered a regular room with a made bed. I thought something was wrong, but I continued as soon as I went to open the door all I heard was “hello” I instantly turned and ran out the window down the fire escape which made a loud noise and got out of there

  • You never go in anywheres without doing research first. Ever. Usually just look up tax records and such and you should be ok

  • You don't. You must always consider someone, somewhere owns the property and whatever is on said property. Some parts of the world you can be shot and killed for trespassing.

    Ohhh that makes sense

  • Yeah. Huge building, everything abandoned. Or at least that's what I believed :))

It was basically an abandoned construction site, I explored it mostly from the view from the roof. Tried to see if there was anything interesting on the first floors before leaving.

Found someone's home. Clean, furniture, electronics. Working fridge, food etc.

Left as soon as I realised it's not abandoned. Didn't take any photos, made sure to clean our footsteps. Didn't go back either lol

  • One time my friend climbed through a broken window and 5 minutes later he heard some dude from the floor above saying "dude i hear shit downstairs". Later on we found out its not abandoned at all and that guy lives there legally.

  • Some buddies and I got into what we thought was an abandoned building by climbing to the roof and entering an unlocked window. Turned out it was being used as a warehouse for the kind of gimicky stuff you'd see on late night commercials. It was filled wall to wall with stacks of stuff like inflatable pool chairs and George foreman grills and stuff like that. We didn't stick around too long once we realized the building was clearly still in use in some capacity, and luckily didn't steal anything because a cop car drove right by us a minute after we left the property.

This is so like ballsy like ive been exploring abandoned places for YEARS but the worst ive done was go into an abandoned school that was supposed to be demolished funny enough- my shirt said “art is cool” & i encountered a construction worker and hetook meto the art room and was like “if you like art you can take it since its all gonna be demoslished in like a month” so that was awesome

  • Went onto a farm that looked abandoned: overgrown weeds everywhere, ramshackle house with busted windows, rubbish everywhere. The owner was there pottering around. I told him I thought it was abandoned. He laughed, looked around and shrugged and said "Fair enough". He said he'd been dragging his feet on cleaning the place up to sell it. I explained that I was interested in photographing old abandoned stuff (had my camera around my neck which helped I reckon) and he showed me some old cars and machinery that were rusting away. Got some cool pics. Went to say hi to him next time I passed through the area and the place was cleaned up and cleared so I guess he stopped dragging his feet lol.

  • If genuine power plant counts then yes

    Story please

  • Once went somewhere that looked 100% abandoned and very cool. Turns out part of that house (one which I found the only entrance to) was actively used as a storage. I went away very quickly.

Its so sad as well because the rest of the house looked so cool. I looked inside from some of the windows and it looked genuinely so cool

  • Me and my friend went into a long abandoned house once with I suspect a homeless person living in. Climbed in through the back and the downstairs was all smashed up and abandoned then when we went upstairs there was a loaf of bread, some tins and a sleeping bag in one of the rooms. The stairs to the attic had like a curtain pulled across it and as soon as we approached it to have a look we smelt a joint get lit up so we quickly left 😭

  • Once upon a time, I went into an abandoned house on the side of the road to explore with friends... We were going to go upstairs but realized there were holes in the steps and ceiling and didn't think the risk was worth it. We stayed about an hour taking pictures and looking through things. As we were driving away, my boyfriend went mute. When we were about a mile away from the house he told us someone was watching us from the upstairs window as we drove away. Scarred for life!

  • i have before more then once. when i was in high school i lived in a newer area so there were parts of the neighbourhood that was rows of unfinished/unoccupied houses. me and my friends being the shit disturbers we were used to like staying out all night (i’d tell my mom i was at my friends house and she’d tell hers she’s at my house) and we’d often “break into” the unused hoses. they were all really big and fancy so it was fun to walk around the houses and hang out sometimes smoke if they had balconies. just be be clear, we never would ruin or break anything.

one night, it was me, my friend f and my friend s. we were walking around the new builds and going in some of them. usually we’d get s (the smallest of us) to go in through the basement window then go and unlock the front door to let us in we found one HUGE house, we did the usual routine and walked around inside the house. it was very big and quite empty. the only things in the house was a ladder and a couple things left behind by the builders/installers but nothing crazy. after a couple minutes we got a message from another one of our friends that she got out too, so we left the house to meet her. when we left we made a mental note of the house number so we could come back with our friend.

so we meet up with our friend chat with her for a big and decide to head back to the house to show her how cool it was, we get back to the house and open the front door that we left unlocked for easier access. when we got in the ladder and a few other things that were in the kitchen were moved right in front of the door. we were all kinda taken aback, even checking to see that we had the right house number cuz that stuff definitely wasn’t there when we left. we decided to investigate a bit and walk in, keeping the front door open cuz we were all kinda spooked. we walked a few steps into the house and my friend f called out “hello” we heard what sounded like footsteps coming from the basement and absolutely booked it out of the house and off that street.

we kinda just assumed that there was probably already someone squatting in that house and we disturbed them. s was absolutely freaked out tho cuz if they were in the basement that means she definitely walked past them while going to unlock the door.

i have one other story but it’s less eventful so i’ll leave that one out

  • Technically there's a more than 60% chance your breaking in regardless of someone actively living in the location. There of course is also the potential for squatters and similar taking up residence as well.

Its a good rule of thumb that if you can't get in easily it' may not be worth the risk.

  • A few times into my house

You broke into your house? Or someones broken into your house?

  • Some friends and I had got into a rental that had been unoccupied for years when I was a kid, stupid af tho. Not even worth it, just empty ass rooms.

  • Stairwells are easy to beak in to. Like really easy. Houses are risky af and its usually obvious that it happened.

  • If you’re this naive about verification, quit while you’re ahead.

You’ll fall through a floor for sure, if you can’t even be bothered to google tax records.

These kinda comments make me mad asl bro yall hate to see people have fun while youre doing the same thing lmao
