  • I expected it to be close to the camera in a forced perspective shot, not actually that big!

  • Okay, maybe it's the gummy, but I thought that was a real plane until the guy grabbed it. Imagine my surprise.

Nah, I've had a few beers, but not drunk and I thought the same. Some really good forced perspective going on. Started to suspect something was up when the plane started acting like a helicopter.

I just drank sparkling water and I felt the same

I just sharted water and felt entirely different.

It is a real plane. There is a pilot in it. There are also giants around.

  • Yeah this is really skillful. Pretty hard to do and maintain for any period of time. This guy’s legit.

Source: I’ve been around radio controlled craft for like +20 years lol.

  • That recovery was so smooth it took a second to realize anything went wrong.

  • That's ridiculous

  • I'm just trying to figure out the physics of this still, is this doctored or is that plane somehow generating lift sideways? Is it so light the propeller can lift the whole plane off the ground?

  • Why would you think that was a REAL plane!?

Edit: I know RC planes, but seriously! You can hear the engine on the first seconds. lol

Only if you have the volume on.

  • Smooth operator

  • Like a dream

  • Geez, get some wheels on that plane!

  • What does "train left the group" mean?

  • That moment when you realize the pilot planned it but your brain absolutely did not.

  • Fairly expected. It's really obvious early on, because it's not moving at speeds and angles a single prop plane would need to stay in the air

  • This is so difficult too. My dad has been into rc planes as long as I can remember. He had a phase where he was trying to do this where the plane would fly vertical in place like that. He built these planes that were incredibly light and made of this very thin foam. They were also very cheap relative to the other rc planes because they would crash a lot. He even got an RC plane simulator with a USB controller that matched his IRL controller. He could never do this. He tried for so long but never fully got it lol. Even crazier that the plane in this post is massive too.

  • I know ZILCH about model planes…and I recognised this as one from a few seconds in. It was so obvs I kept watching for the ACTUAL reveal…I thought maybe it was going to explode? Nope. No it didn’t. No.

  • When you can't do landings yet.

    No front landing gear.

  • i see the string

  • OP sent the following text as an explanation why their post fits here:

It is a scale model airplane, not a real airplane.

  • Great idea to grab that plane like that. I expect to see them on s/whatcouldgowrong

It’s pretty safe. The planes weigh little and the pilot cuts the throttle as his hands grab the plane.

No, it's really not. This is clearly a fairly windy environment, and the catcher's hands are getting within a foot or two of the prop while it's running. The only time that should happen is when the plane is firmly in control by somebody's hands, like while on a bench for testing or performing a hand launch.

I've seen someone hospitalized when they attempted to land their plane too close to them, and the throttle was almost entirely cut at the time given how well their particular plane glides. All it takes is for the pilot to slightly lose control and that propeller could be spinning towards either of their heads.

It is not the weight of the plane that worries me. It is the propeller.

Since he’s holding the body of the plane unless his other hand goes into the prop or the hand gripping the body loses it’s hold it’s safe, is it the safest way to catch a plane? No.

I can’t tell if you are joking. It is only safe if everything goes perfectly. By the same token free handling a cobra is safe. That might be safest way to catch a plane, but it is a stunt, not necessarily. They could just land the plane on the runway.

Yep agreed. They could of just landed it on the runway.

  • A guy at our club lost a finger last summer from a much smaller electric plane. It did not cut it off, but after 2 surgeries they had to amputate it. I could not imagine getting hit in the face, neck or head. The neck would be fatal.
