Out of the box the device is buggy. Initial setup seems to work and then constant disconnect - at home right next to my lab. Read that it shipped with some not up to date firmware and the update feature also does not work. Seriously Unifi? C'mon this is amateurish! Even at $79

  • Ugh fine I’ll buy it off you then

  • First Time ?

  • Early adopters are now QA testers.

Just the way things are in the world.

In the low end Ubiquiti world for sure. Forever testers on beta gear.

Being the high end of consumer gear yes?

My company would laugh their ass off at buying anything from proper enterprise that hadn’t been out for at least 6+ months and wasn’t a few updates deep. Nothing ships perfect anymore, although premium enterprise support with penalties helps, something a home user or SMB will never have.

  • My favourite bit was OpenVPN “coming soon”

  • Par for the Ubiquiti course.

My same thought. How can they possibly uphold proper QA testing when they have over a hundred of active distinct models? They shoot from the hip and everyone forgives them because they are "cheap" compared to Aruba, Meraki, Cisco etc. The Unifi status quo hasn't changed. I dealt with the same crap on gen 1 cloud keys, usg routers, etc. At least I firmly know what to expect.

  • Honestly? Why should I have to figure out some SSH way of downloading and installing some "TestFlight" SW version? It's nuts! I will just put it into a drawer for a month and see how it works then. Luckily the other travel routers I have all work AOK.

Even though Ubiquiti patterns themselves after Apple - they’re not Apple.

Obviously you haven’t had the joy of working with their early (new) releases.

This is normal. The difference is that eventually / usually things will get better - unlike other brands that release a 1.0 (beta) product and never release any updates to address major issues.

The bugs are part of why they are like Apple.

Hardware defects would be more apple

And vulnerabilities, but that's what I meant by bugs/bad software.

  • (Thinks back to UDM Pro launch) ….

You haven’t been using Ubiquiti for long have you???

  • You're a beta tester. This is the experience you should expect.

  • I just got mine today, and have been testing a bunch of configuration variations. It does seem to want to reboot any time I make config changes, but that is OK (I guess). Other than that it has been stable. I will keep monitoring it. Post if I see any instability on mine.

  • I'll take it off your hands, send me an email for a pre paid UPS label.

  • Works fine and pretty stable after updating firmware via ssh to 239. Tested Teleport, WireGuard, 5G tethering, etc.

  • To me it was weird that when changing settins it reboots itself. I gotta play more around today.

    That won't fix anything unfortunately

  • Some of us knew fresh off the press hardware that had "coming soon" for features on its product page meant it would have to ripen.

    Others... Well, here we are.

Bought mine knowing there would be growing pains. It'll age like AMD drivers and shine with time and firmware pushes.

  • I think mine needs an upgrade too, but the SSH option is missing in my UniFi Network app. So I’m stuck.

  • I haven’t had any issues with mine

Same. I plug it in, about a minute or so it’s connected to home. It works for my needs.

  • Always give it at least 1-year before buying new Ubiquiti products for exactly this reason.

  • Agreed. This is laughable in current form.

  • upgrade has to be done by ssh. i had also issues on the firmware that came with. its ok just released cant be expecting to be perfect

It's not unreasonable to expect these bugs to be fixed before release. We've just come to expect some major issues from initial releases due to it happening so often. We're early adopters, not beta testers.

I'm sure they'll work things out and all will be good. I just think asking for better in the future is reasonable and we should.

Needing a new release update is nothing unusual. Not being able to do the update is a bit of a PITA

i did the upgrade using ssh i know thats not the best but at least it worked.

    Which frigate is buggy?

i had issues with the teleport. once i upgraded to 238 and after 239 got fixed

Excuse my ignorance. I’ve been having issues as well. I don’t see which version I’m on…pic

you have ios right? i think ios has to be done using a unifi version from testflight

I’m on the TestFlight version. Weird…

i have android but i did the upgrade using ssh from my computer. there is also some posts on reddit about that

How do you get a specific version on TestFlight?

    SSH :What creds?

you can set up the ssh credentials under unifi app

Cool. But don’t you have to have a specific iOS version. How can I find that specific version which allows you to enable ssh?

Mine updated right after initial setup without SSH. Had it plugged into Ethernet

got upgraded on the latest version. the latest version is .239 as far as i know. under the app was on lower version and wasnt updating.

Latest release notes are for .238 (official) and nothing for Early Access, but I do see some people are jumping through hoops to install .239. Mine just says "up to date" but no way to see what version that is. Also currently no way to enable SSH with the iOS app. I've tested all my use cases and everything seems to be working just fine so I am going to leave it well enough alone. I have to use IP addresses, but I was able to map to my NAS, run screen sharing from my Macbook to my Mac Mini, map a printer and print a test page. No disconnects and speedtests check out with what I expect on the various different types of uplinks. Only other thing I have to try out is running a G4 Instant on the UTR but I want to get the PoE to USB-C adapter first instead of changing the WiFi that it's hooked up to. This thing is so small I won't mind having to pack a PoE injector to come along with it. Overall, very happy with the UTR for my needs.

yeah i use an android but still even there i couldnt update it to the latest version but i can activate the ssh so i did the upgrade after. i had issues with the teleport couldnt connect after the upgrade got fixed. i like too the size most likely i m going to attach it on my mudy v2 for a like portable cellular router that connecting on my network. i wish they had a version with cellular also but overall i m happy so far.

Correct, a Ubiquiti prodict will never release in good condition. It is cheap for a reason. Also, try not making excuses for crap products from a multi-billion dollar company.

its not an excuse its a fact. all the companies releases bugs on their products on the release. the first thing our phones all the times bugs. i wouldnt say that ubiquiti is cheap.

Oh, you thought you could say you're not doing it and I would believe that, wild. Anyway Ubiquiti fanboy making excused for a multi-billion dollar company that couldn't care less about you. Ubiquiti is cheap. No wonder you think it is acceptable to accept crap gear, you don't have experiance with good stuff if you think Ubiquiti isn't cheap.

if you have experience with good stuff then i guess not going to be so complicated to upgrade through ssh the firmware.

Nothing complicated about it. It just shouldn't be happening and you shouldn't be making excuses for poor products.

personally the only issue that i had was teleport. after the upgrade got fixed. i didnt try everything but whatever i care worked fine. poor product i would call it only if they wouldnt fix it or not trying to improve it. after not even a week that i have it i cant say that.

    More excuses, dang.

Yea we still aren’t buying new Cisco or Netapp gear in enterprise until it has a couple of updates either.

While there have been firmware updates, my CGF has run problem-free since the day I received it.

To be clear, that wasn't product launch day, but only a few months later.

    Great story.

Seriously, I've had zero issues with it.

Not that it has no bugs, I simply haven't come across any the way I use it.

  • Thanks for beta testing it for us boo.
