I'm not sure that an internship is the right move in your first summer; the better option might be to look for an NSF Research Experience for Undergrads (REU). These are typically very good experiences over a couple of months in the summer, and you receive housing and ~$6k.
Note that different REUs will have different citizenship requirements.
It's too late for the NREIP program, which I typically recommend for US nationals and permanent residents.
Above all, you should also confer with the undergrad program leaders in your department(s), as they will have additional tips. For BME, speak with Prof. Shannon Barker. For Chem-E, speak with Prof. Geoff Geise. They may know of some research opps at UVa.
