Spanberger (and dems generally) need to learn to play hardball. If this republican board appoint a president in December, Spamberger’s board should fire him in January or February.
It also raises questions about the dude’s common sense. If I were involved in a search that got this political this fast, I’d put things on pause and make sure I was cool with the incoming admin. The courts shut down all 22 of Youngkin’s appointees to higher education boards. The rector and vice rector at UVA are on thin ice too. So SB could be taking over with significant faculty/student resistance and with his mandate from the board erased by new appointments. It’s the dumbest move from a supposedly smart person I’ve heard of lately and leads to the conclusion that a) he’s not that smart, b) he’s an arrogant business f—khead who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else or c) there’s a compelling reason (hidden agenda?) that makes it urgent for him to take over now.
Just like I objected to Mitch McConnell using democratic transition to block Obama's SC nominees, I don't buy the Lt. Governor's use of that point. I do question the speed of the process and agree with institutional norms part of the statement. I'm more surprised that anyone was crazy enough to accept the position given the guaranteed disorder on the board with the change in the governorship.
Whatever. Spanberger holds all the cards here. If he’s the right person, he’ll stay. if he’s not, he’ll be gone in 6 months (or less).
