hi i’m a freshman majoring in accounting and next semester i have the option to join the honors college part of utsa but i looked at all the stuff and is it even worth it? they make you take a bunch of random classes and make you do extra stuff for “experience”. the only reason i’m considering this is bc i haven’t done an internship or have had a job so it might look good on a resume, but for people also in accounting does that even matter 😭 anyways i just wanted to ask if anyone who’s done or is in honors can lmk if it’s worth it id appreciate it

  • My ex gf was an accounting major & in the honors college (because she’s a Terry Scholar) & honestly, I wouldn’t do it. She was always complaining about the extra unnecessary courses & events she had to attend. She was able to get an internship two summers ago, but I’m like 80% sure it’s because of the Terry’s. As in she also had to fulfill the “3 experiences a semester.” I myself was also offered to join the honors college and didn’t do it because 1/they take more of your financial aid for “more scholarship opportunities,” and 2/ there’s genuinely no use for those extra courses. My ex did it all because she needed to have the experiences and classes to remain Terry eligible, but, the Terry scholarship pays for everything. If I had that scholarship, of course I’d do honors and comply with the requirements. But for someone who isn’t a Terry Scholar, I just don’t really see a use for it.

  • HC member here.

If you (plan to) have a 3.8+ UTSA GPA with a marketable major, a strong network and a firm career focus, Honors College will probably cost you more money and time than it’s worth. They require you take extra courses that don’t really help you career-wise.

If you won’t meet those criteria, it may be a good thing to have on the resume just so you can say you were an Honors College student, but don’t expect to get any kind of career benefit from it.

  • Look at the study abroad opportunities for HC.

  • I would do it your freshman year. In the meantime maximize your credits by taking CLEPs. Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, Humanities, US History 1, American Government, US History 2, (trust me you will never use it or your math in your career). If you can Pre Calculus. If you were strong in Chemistry or Biology try those. Tough but doable. You only need to pass 1 and it counts 6 credits.

It is an open question as to whether the State Board accepts CLEP Business credits. You can CLEP Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Marketing, Management and Information Systems. You will still have 6 credits of Statistics, 9 other Business credits at the junior/senior level. You need 21 upper level business credits to sit for the exam.

Your first semester should look like this. AIS Business, English 1, Finite Math and Financial Accounting. Watch the Accounting Stuff 5 hour video to get an overview. Accounting is not rocket science but it is a new language to learn with a lot of jargon.

Anyway the idea is to get into courses and clear prerequisites. None of the general education credits mentioned above will be prerequisites for your other courses.

  • Only for registration skip, but too much nonsense stuff. Would I do it again?? Knowing what I know now, I would pass in a heat beat.

  • I stayed in honors college literally just for the early registration, that's all it really did for me personally

  • Yes, the early registration allows you to register for classes before graduate students and undergraduate seniors. Honestly, it is so worth it, especially if you're a freshman.

This. Tbh don't even do the associated stuff just think of it as paying 300 bucks a semester for prio registration

  • The only people who I saw who really benefited from Honors are people who have a goal of going to grad school of some kind, the resources helped immensely. My peers that did it basically had a easier time getting in somewhere than I did. I wish I did it for that reason.
