What is a Tsunami Ready Village ?

  1. India would soon have over 100 Tsunami Ready Villages among the Indian Ocean Region - This will be Highest among the countries in the Indian Ocean Region. 
  2. What is a Tsunami Ready Village - TRV is certified to be the ones that have High awareness about Tsunami, Hazard Preparedness and Mapping, public display of evacuation maps, 24-hour warning systems, participation in mock drills etc. 
  3. The certification is awarded by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) 
  4. Currently India has 24 such villages spread across 6 districts. However, Odisha, Gujarat, Kerala, AP and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have identified many coastal villages for this initiative. 
  5. INCOIS Hyderabad is the co-ordinating institute for the implementation of the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Initiative.
