Secondary PM 2.5 ( Ammonium Sulfate )

  1. Sources of Ammonium Sulfate - Coal Plants, Industries, Agriculture (Fertiliser Use), Livestock Waste.
  2. It is a chemically formed Pollutant - Secondary Pollutant.
  3. Ammonium Sulfate is a secondary inorganic aerosol  formed through the oxidation of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) into Sulfate and its further reaction with the ammonia emissions from Agriculture and other sources.
  4. The formation of ammonium sulfate is enhanced under humid conditions.
  5. Secondary Particulate matter is a core driver of PM2.5 Pollution in India
  6. Note - India is the biggest emitter of SO2 Globally and ranks second only to China.
