Long term lurker here.

Not sure why I'm posting, maybe looking for advice. Has anyone changed/altered or increased specific preps based on recent events?

Personally, I'm almost sure the U.S is planning to invade or at least "intervene" in Iran, with all of the USAF aircraft landing in the UK within the last 2+ days.

What are we stocking up on differently than usual, if anything? What has changed? Should anything change? Will this affect us?

Thanks in advance.

  • To me, I'm not particularly concerned about it specifically, but more that it indicates a serious shift in global stability. The AI bubble will burst sooner or later, AI is also displacing jobs. Things will continue to escalate in Eastern Europe. These can affect us in the UK in different ways, but whatever happens it will be a bumpy ride.

You've hit the nail on the head. Pressures from multiple wars. Weaponized migration and migration of the desperate trying to get in before all hell breaks loose. No real jobs because of Ai. Then the North Atlantic Current collapses.

Yeah. Nothing that isn’t actually mainstream, genuinely serious concerns by people. Still could be hugely disruptive.

One look at history shows things can get tough very fast.

It would only take the supply chain of covid and france temporarily closing the border and it would take what, a week?

Completely agree, I run more along the line of; small changes accelerate global events. Should they intervene in Iran, this could have other longreaching effects even just by knock-on.

Yes, exactly. You've probably seen Chris Whitty give a statement recently, they are obviously becoming more concerned about civilian readiness for things like power outages, cyber attacks, etc.

Completely, never thought I'd see the day the UK government would recommend readiness.

Recent pushes for British Army gap years and apprenticeships seem more than previous don't you think?

This is definitely a strategic move. If you look at the content of the strategic defence review (which went largely unnoticed by the public) they recommended three new weapons factories built and running in the UK - which in itself should wake people up.

They also want the cadet forces to increase their take up of young people by 30% and are increasing spending here - look at the history of the army cadets, they do this whenever they think there’s a need for more soldiers in the next few years.

There is, IMHO, a storm coming… I’d say 2027 if I were a betting man. I doubt there will be a full on invasion of the UK, but I can absolutely foresee the EU and NATO going to war over the annexation of Greenland; or Russia taking a chunk of Ukraine (the Donbas region Trump is pushing for); or even a Venezuela-style takeover of Ukraine by Putin.

There’s a lot of pieces being moved on the chessboard at the moment. This is the time to plan…

Definitely, though being honest I’d thought they’d do more and quicker. In Poland they apparently have air ride siren training etc.

Considering our level of involvement in Ukraine I thought they’d have ramped things up.

Cyber attacks on the electricity grid I prep for just look at Berlin (yes I know the Berlin outage was a physical attack).

  • Seems interesting. You'd expect it to want to go for more low hanging fruit, especially as it has insinuated as such. But of course, that's what it wants you to think!

You can never predict Trump. I'm not sure if anyone was expecting with some semblance of surety that he would take Maduro.

It's so obscure at the moment, but points towards Iran?

To answer your question more directly though. I don't see what it would change with regard to prepping. I think it would be unlikely that it would affect us, unless you can think of any way.

The strait of hormuz (the part navigable by oil tankers is just 3 miles wide) being closed would very much affect you I assure you.

  • The Marinera oil taker is on its way from Venezuela to Russia...going through the Greenland, Iceland, UK gap soon.

As for preps, no nothing has changed for us. We've kind of prepped for increased instability as much as we are currently able to.

I probably need to spend a little less time watching global events for sanity sake. It's all very surreal, a bit of general ignorance might be of benefit right now.

  • I'm going to increase my capacity to grow more fruit and veg. I prep for interruptions in the supply chain and increases in global instability makes this more likely.

I think we're vulnerable to this as a nation that imports a lot of it's fresh produce.

  • 'Personally, I'm almost sure the U.S is planning to invade or at least "intervene" in Iran, with all of the USAF aircraft landing in the UK within the last 2+ days.' Agree totally after Putin and the Venezuela snatch of Maduro anything is possible. I already have fuel cans and siphons but I fear Iran may cut the strait of hormuz so I want to give some fuel cans and siphons to my relatives. I also will buy more toilet paper in case trade in the red sea is affected by houthis etc.

  • If the us is going to invade Iran the buildup would take months. Look for whole carrier groups moving to the Middle East.

  • If anyone is knee jerk reacting to the previous day's news, then maybe they should first look at their prepping strategy.

Prepping is about being ready BEFORE everyone else starts creating shortages of petrol, candles and toilet paper (all of which are quite low on my own list of "essentials").

Ps. Not a criticism of the OP, just my feeling from some of the thread.

For somebody who doesn't prep and is here because this post appeared on my feed - what are your top essentials?

Prep to shelter in place. If an event happens requiring you to leave your home everything is over anyway.

After that think about surviving for two weeks at home while services are down. You need:

    Water Food Warmth Health Communications

A lifestraw, two weeks tinned/dried food, blankets, medications and a decent first aid kit and training, and a battery powered or wind-up/solar FM radio are my essentials.

My top essentials is a month or two's worth of basic foodstuffs, and two stores of water, grey and clean.

The basic foodstuffs are large bags of rice and pasta, tins of tomatoes, baked beans and veg like peas and carrots, and different varieties of beans.

The grey water store is a 1000 litre IBC tank used in normal circumstances for collecting rainwater from the house gutters and then for watering the garden, in SHTF situation it would be used for washing and other non-food use. If need be it could easily be filtered and boiled for food use. (we have an appropriate filter)

The clean water store is a dozen 25l containers for storing tap water. A number are always filled, the empty ones would be filled with fresh water the moment any hint that water shortages might occur. If need be, I could drive to find a tap to fill water if my home supply unexpectedly failed, as at least I'll always have the appropriate clean containers to fetch and carry the resupply. (and 25l is just the right size for a wheelbarrow if I had no other means of transport)

There'd always be more in store, but I'd never not have the above in place. The basic food has a shelf life of years, and it is regularly rotated. I wouldn't expect to have to survive on just that, our store contains more, but the above is an absolute requirement that I'd never not have.

Just wrote the above post... went to make a hot drink... and my house electric had a brownout - lights dimmed and back on again in a second. Goes to show, you never know when things might happen!

  • Arthur Snell and Anton Geraschchenko both saying on bluesky that Iran could be next in the crosshairs and that plans are afoot to evacuate Iranian leadership to Moscow, and repeating reports of plane movements to the UK. Neither are prone to hyperbole and both know their onions. So some sort of military action appears to be a genuine possibility. Israel making threats too, and met Trump last week.

That said…not doing any more than keeping my usual supplies topped up, which has been useful for this weather too. Would like to get out for a few things today but there’s black ice everywhere so that might have to wait!

  • I'm not a prepper myself (yet) but the thought of becoming one has always lingered in the back of my mind. I'm starting to edge towards starting this year.

I think the U.S moving on Venezuela but seemingly Greenland especially has really shocked me in a way that Ukraine/Covid never did.

Not because I think it will kickstart WW3, but because it seems that the U.S knows something we don't. To me it seems that the big players globally are fast tracking their geopolitical plans for some reason.

My personal opinion is that the biggest global threat to us right now is the shifting poles. If there was a catastrophic geomagnetic reversal, there would probably be certain areas on the earth that would become very, very desirable. Is the U.S making a play towards capturing some of these areas?

It seems to me that the blasé attitude with which Putin invaded Ukraine, Trump captured Maduro and the Chinese look to Taiwan makes me think that a 'cut off point', so to speak, is coming and these countries don't believe there is a future world in which they have to worry about negative repercussions.

  • I've a few articles about Venzuala being about thier sale of oil in a currency other than dollars.

Same with Russua, Cina and Iran

Usa needs to proper it's position of all (almost) oil trading being in dollars, if that were to change there would be all sorts of bother with the USA.

Whether that contagion would hugely disadvantage the UK is a question - the disadvantage, compared to the advantage of the new global currency.

Note: I haven't watched any Canadian Prepper videos, so obviously I am not panicking at this stage 😀

  • Have been a lurker here but recent events have got me thinking. I’d like to start with a wind up radio. Can you all recommend the best.

  • There is still a path to a China-US war. Venezuela is not a large supplier of oil to China (plus it's oil is really heavy and would need a $80 oil price to break even), but Iran provides maybe 15% of China's oil. If Trump gets happy and decides he's going to use the precedent of Venezuela on Iran, this could all still go Kaboom.

  • Such a stupid post hahaha. Let's stock up on baked beans because there's some US Jets landing in the UK and I think the USA will invade Iran next. Source? Trust me bro im almost certain.
