Hello, I have debt with a uk university, I was enrolled my final year of study but was unable to attend to due ill health. I have sent my evidence to student finance who have accepted this, the university have said they are considering my case. The private debt collector, however, have been sending ever increasing threats. I have read other threads about simply saying the debt is in dispute. Would this work in this case, I am simply waiting for all the paperwork to go through, I was not studying that year due to ill health, and was not expecting to pay for the year of study I did not receive. I think it is mostly a case of SFE not talking to the university who is not talking to the debt collector, however, I do not want anything on my record or any bailiffs coming for 9 thousand pounds I do not have.

  • Do you have evidence proving that you unenrolled with the university for your final year? If you didn't, I suspect you will struggle to defend this debt; trivial example, if you order a takeaway and it gets delivered to you (i.e. you asked for a service and they provided you access to it) but you let the takeaway go cold and don't eat it, that's still a meal you've paid for and you aren't going to get a refund.

  • Just write back disputing the debt and for them to stop contacting you otherwise you will consider it harassment and report them to the regulatory body (usually fca but it will say on the papers)

Maybe worth reaching out to the students union of the university you attended as well.
