in any non AI related conversation the moment I hear the word slop used unironically I kinda just discard that person's argument
sometimes they have a point but usually they're just cynicism poisoned, and when they aren't there's probably someone else saying it more constructively
I can't remember a slang term go from useful to meaningless faster than slop. Slop had a specific meaning when it emerged, and now its just completely devoid of context. I blame Zoomer's lack of object permanence.
it sucked when it emerged too, it's just another in the long line of terms replacing mediocre with something even more derisive and cynical, it was always going to end up toxic
I think this phenomenon sits perfectly at the intersection of FOMO culture and the new "everything is content" consumer culture,
where everything that people watch has to be a perfect ten outta ten no flaws epic mastapiece or it's not worth your time.
it's like people are literally unable to sit and engage with a flawed piece of media and recognize that even a thoroughly mediocre piece of media can have singular good aspects like good writing or performances and can still be worth your while in spite of its flaws.
not the same but related: the recent conversation pat and woolie had on CSB about what does and does not constitute filler and that episodes about side characters etc that don't advance the plot but let you stay with the characters and setting for a while are not useless padding and there for a reason. some people seem to be unable to engage with the media they consume on that level anymore. there's no appreciation for just spending some more time in a particular setting or with specific characters.
I feel like I read this exact same complaint about almost every popular slang term or word used hyperbolically, I don't think it's a zoomer thing I think you're just overestimating the precision of how people use language
Ive seen a linguist talk about how slang tends to do this as a default. But the slang that "hides" as a more normal words sticks around and incorporates itself into language
Also I turn 30 in a few days and while there are some games from this list that I've experienced and really love (FF7, RE4, Kingdom Hearts)...I only played those games in the last 5 years.
Some things are just really good, regardless of when you experienced them.
Probably not, but to be fair most of the media from the 90s-early 2000s also didn't withstand 20 years of hindsight. The outstanding good shit, and some of the really bad shit, stays remembered and all the incredibly mid stuff gets tossed into the forgotten hole.
Yeah, the 2000's era was filled to the brim with actual slop. Not just "mediocre" or appeals to a specific crowd, but like, walmart bulk bins that you could scoop a snow shovel's worth of games out of for like, fifty bucks.
Kids nowadays never got the Surf's Up official tie in game for the PS2 for christmas.
I mean Haruhi Suzumiya was considered a generational masterpiece anime that changed the anime zeitgeist and that nobody would ever forget, now 20 years later, nobody even knows what the heck that show is about and 'did people really dance this Hare Hare Yukai back then? Aren't they embarassed?'
That’s kinda how I feel seeing clips of those Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask UE5 remakes. They look pretty, but are they necessary? The games still hold up and their 3DS remakes have their spot in greatness, too, so why try to improve on perfection?
Ship of Harkinian does everything you’d want a remaster to do and more. I actually can’t imagine any other remaster/remake making the game better than that
the only one of those that's slop is friend, now is not the time to pit ourselves against each other. i shall have no quarrel with you this day. not in a place where we can instead celebrate the things that we love
It's funny i just had this discussion with my friend, over each generation saying the things from their childhood is the best and that whatever has come after is bad. I wouldn't even call it gatekeeping, but instead something more akin to generational competition. My friend did however say that "Those were the good times" because things were more simple and good.
Ultimately our conversation steered into how difficult it is to keep track of EVERYTHING that happens during a year, and there's probably a lot of things the common person don't know about, which has ultimately been for the betterment of everyone. He's very prone to nostalgia and I'm very prone to living in the now.
I think it's easy to think that the times when you were a kid were simple and good because kids aren't really exposed to stuff that aren't simple and good, and when they are exposed, they don't really get it anyways. Like, I remember seeing 9/11 happen on the TV as a kid, but I was young enough that it completely flew over my head how much that had influenced basically everything around me at the time, and it's really only in retrospect that I can understand it.
Yeah that's my take too. When you're a child you don't really have alot of experience and may therefore lack comprehension. I mean there is a reason the topic of Death is something that parents dread having to explain. That and the bird & bees.
Remember when your classes had bells ringing to signify that they were over? Imagine your boss not being able to make you work through lunch or unpaid overtime because the bell rang.
I’m turning 44 this year and like half this list came out when I was a teenager, I even remember reading about StarCraft early alpha when I was still in middle school.
if anyone tells you you’re old and they’re like 30, just say you were 20 when DOTA first came out. That comparison just hits different compared to like “I remember when Zelda 1 came out” which just makes you sound ancient.
I think it originated as an attempt at an insult like kids in asia calling any middle aged guy uncle but it backfired and millenials went “hell yeah brother thats MY uncslop!”
preach. what isn't cool about naked chicks in space ships and firing magic from a sick ass gun and also the space ships HAVE ARMS IS THAT NOT SICK AS HELL???
I've no idea what unc means...I'm falling behind and my hatred for the word slop increases day by day. I'll morph into the old man yelling at the cloud meme someday.
Gaming peaked in 98 and had a few highlight years in the odds, but there is a reason outside of nostalgia that people still praise the "UNC slop" to this day.
Also, please stop calling me old, my knees only make 15 different sounds when I sit down. That's nothing.
So when do we get into the unc wars over what games beat others? My 50-something ass has zero fond memories of Halo 2, but I played the hell out of UT and Q3 back in the day.
To be fair that's basically everywhere. I've seen tons of posts that hit the front page that are basically "MEMBER WHEN GAME GOOD" and it's like Crash Bandicoot or some other PS1/PS2 game.
I have a suspicion that a lot of people who are like that either didn't actually grow up during that time period and are pretending or they grew up in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood where the small handful of black/asian/hispanic/minority kids in their classes were largely left alone.
I believe it's a term for someone older. A shortening of "uncle" by people too dumb to realize you don't capitalize every letter of an abbreviation (you capitalize the letters if it's an initialism), where they should be writing "unc" or "Unc" at worst.
Im ngl i hate when white people, yeah i just magically know the race of the person who created this, just take a word with a clear definition and use it improperly
Honestly the funniest part for me is the fact that we can barely get a few good Star Wars games nowadays, when during the UNCSLOP years we got Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Republic Commando, Force Unleashed and more all within a few years of each other, and more. It's not even anything problematic; it's just normal ass shit, but people really hate others gushing over the things they like.
"Unc slop"
Looks inside
Unc gems
No slop here, just childhood and great memories
You only like them cause they're good
Qualityslop
Can't name a single reason why this is worth it besides "I like it". Biaslop
Biaslop!
"IS A MAN NOT ENTITLED TO THE SLOP OF HIS BROW!?"
Isn't that that Adam Sandler movie?
Beat me to it lol
ah yes, the unchaos GEMERALDS...!
mfs will call anything "slop" nowadays
You only like Qualityslop because it's good.
everything is slop
slop is everything
Primordial slop
We are born of the slop, made men by the slop, undone by the slop. Our eyes are yet to open. Fear the Old Slop.

uncpost
Millennial-whine-slop
There's been an identifiable change in taste for people once they reach the age of 34.
Google "super best friends play rule 34" to learn more.
Thats it, im copyright striking superbunnyhop
I spent a minute trying to figure out what UNC stood for before realizing it's supposed to be Unc as in Uncle.
Clearly talking about Unified National Coarse screw and bolt threads. Less fine threads do allow more slop, of course.
That's what the thread locker compound is for nephew.
Obviously it means the University of North Carolina.
Go Tarheels
United Nations spaceCommand
It’s another bit of AAVE that’s been bastardized
Yeah, A lot of it is. But funnily enough this one is a funny combination of AAVE and Internet lingo.
The funniest intersection of subgroups & inventing slang.
UNiversal Century clearly
Uh oh careful you're gonna start a whole New but of discourse.
Ultra Nutria Crawl, that one guy we all subscribe to as a bit whenever anything unrelated goes right.
You wouldn't believe how hard I had to scrape to find a small mammal with a single word name that starts with N
I don't understand why we're calling this uncslop, there isn't a single Universal Century Gundam series in here.
Also I turn 30 in a few days and while there are some games from this list that I've experienced and really love (FF7, RE4, Kingdom Hearts)...I only played those games in the last 5 years.
Some things are just really good, regardless of when you experienced them.
Yea I played most of those as a. Adult
Considering the time frame it's probably actually more likely a non UC Gundam show pops up. Probably Gundam Wing or maybe even G Gundam.
Its definitely G Gundam. (Source: I'm literally 34)
If liking UC Gundam is unc slop, then call me Sloppenheimer
If you watched UC as a child then you ain't unc, you are grandpa
People that think this stuff is slop, I don’t want to talk to you anyway because you clearly have bad taste.
not our fault society peaked in the 2000s
Just like the Matrix said it would.
Did I miss something, why are we talking about a college?
Because higher education is important.
Aye, fair enough
We're not trapping you we just think you could enrich yourself culturally is all
Thanks mom.
I mean "slop" is a good way to describe the Tar Heels' season last year.
Pro skater 3? REAL unc slop starts at pro skater 2
3 had bam which ties it into Jackass another Unc-core gem
CORRECT
BUT IT'S NOT SLOP IF IT'S GOOD
I wonder if most of the media we consume nowadays will withstand 20 years of hindsight.
Probably not, but to be fair most of the media from the 90s-early 2000s also didn't withstand 20 years of hindsight. The outstanding good shit, and some of the really bad shit, stays remembered and all the incredibly mid stuff gets tossed into the forgotten hole.

Kids nowadays never got the Surf's Up official tie in game for the PS2 for christmas.
There is a real risk that some of the big games will be delisted and lost to time.
As someone who was once an Arcade Fire fan, no, no it will not.
Bro hasn't heard of qualityslop! Point and laugh.
The older brother pig: once more you attempt to dissuade me from my prize, you truly are despicable brother
quality slop, you only like it because its good
Anything is slop to kids if it was made before they were born
QUALITY SLOP IS REAL
Where's silent hill 2 at
Not slop enough
WOW
I guess i've been an unc since i was 15.
Yesterdays uncslop is today's UE5slop remake
That’s kinda how I feel seeing clips of those Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask UE5 remakes. They look pretty, but are they necessary? The games still hold up and their 3DS remakes have their spot in greatness, too, so why try to improve on perfection?
Ship of Harkinian does everything you’d want a remaster to do and more. I actually can’t imagine any other remaster/remake making the game better than that
Didn't know this was a thing until now. Thanks!
we're uncmaxxing
Holy shit get in here
But I haven't even seen Death Note!
YOU HAVEN'T SEEN DEATH NOTE!?
YOU? HAVEN'T SEEN DEATH NOTE? YOU?
the only one of those that's slop is friend, now is not the time to pit ourselves against each other. i shall have no quarrel with you this day. not in a place where we can instead celebrate the things that we love

I quite enjoy these discussions with my friend.
I think it's easy to think that the times when you were a kid were simple and good because kids aren't really exposed to stuff that aren't simple and good, and when they are exposed, they don't really get it anyways. The things from my childhood are the best because I didn't had to pay taxes then.
Remember when your classes had bells ringing to signify that they were over? Imagine your boss not being able to make you work through lunch or unpaid overtime because the bell rang.
I literally just 100% Sonic Adventure 2 Battle two weeks ago, why do you do this to me?
Why is everything turning into slop? Are we in the Evangelion timeline???
No, thats fanta, its different.
But fanta itself is sodaslop though?
I'm in my 20s and I already can't stop thinking about NGE and SA2
lol that's how it starts
I’m turning 44 this year and like half this list came out when I was a teenager, I even remember reading about StarCraft early alpha when I was still in middle school.
I feel better knowing I’m not the only one entering The 44 Club in this sub
if anyone tells you you’re old and they’re like 30, just say you were 20 when DOTA first came out. That comparison just hits different compared to like “I remember when Zelda 1 came out” which just makes you sound ancient.
heavy sigh
I remember watching TV and seeing Paul Reiser play fucking Zelda 2 on My Two Dads
Hey, I'm not 34 yet. Come see me in like eight months.
This meme would have me believe that "unc" is a compliment, but I'm pretty sure it's not. The only thing I can't comment on it Kingdom Hearts.
children have always come up with new and exciting insults to be used against anyone with a fully formed brain
I think it's just the modern day 'boomer' which was at one point the modern day 'geezer'
I think it originated as an attempt at an insult like kids in asia calling any middle aged guy uncle but it backfired and millenials went “hell yeah brother thats MY uncslop!”
Close more so AAVE slang for old guy/OG/“old head”.
Genuinely reminds me of that 4chan post of the guy going “This is just qualityslop, you only like it because it’s good” with like 100+ replies
I’m 23. When can I become unc? My siblings have children and I feel old
Unc is a state of mind. There's no age cut off. Join us
You gotta tough it out a lil longer Big Bro.
Damn, I’ll earn that title one day
Have you ever considered buying older hardware of devices for the simplicity? You might be uncmaxxing and not even know it.
unfortunately too much. Brother I own too many consoles from before I existed. That SP101 is immaculate though
What does it mean if you’ve been talking about these gems since you were a kid or teen?
It means you used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what you're with isn't "it", and what's "it" seems weird and scary to you.
I’m definitely old man shouting at cloud about E33
You are unc now
Happy to be an unc then
But Outlaw Star is a banger and I have to tell people.
preach. what isn't cool about naked chicks in space ships and firing magic from a sick ass gun and also the space ships HAVE ARMS IS THAT NOT SICK AS HELL???
i'm no unc/auntie but i will take diablo 2 with me to my grave, that was the first video game i ever played and it's a masterpiece
Damn, I guess we're calling anything slop now
A few years ago it was "Zoomerslop"
A few years before that it was "Millennialcore"
It's actually strangely heartwarming to see despite the labels changing the contents pretty much stay the same
I've no idea what unc means...I'm falling behind and my hatred for the word slop increases day by day. I'll morph into the old man yelling at the cloud meme someday.
You have become Unc.
lol you defined unc in your comment.
It’s just AAVE slang for old guy/OG/older member of society.
Using it like an insults is like “ok boomer”
And here I just thought I found out it meant uncle, which I have been since I was 1 year old.
If people are gonna start calling things unc slop I can say z-slop. Zlop.
Hahahaha yeah you unc's...
Me at 33: Phew...the wolves are at ol' Gill's house though. Fuck that was a unc reference
Gaming peaked in 98 and had a few highlight years in the odds, but there is a reason outside of nostalgia that people still praise the "UNC slop" to this day.
Also, please stop calling me old, my knees only make 15 different sounds when I sit down. That's nothing.
My knee just makes one noise, it went for Big Number over Do Combo.
I haven’t been able to stop thinking about RE4 since it released
University North Carolina slop, I.E. illiterate athlete graduates, extremely boring STEM majors, and a litany of overly specific humanities degrees
I'm 26 and this is most of the things* I like
This is me at 28.
this was made by an unc to troll his unc friends.
Oh boy I'm turning 34 this year, can't wait to start slopping it;
This'll be me but with late 2000's YouTubers.
I will become an old man talking about how things were cooler back in my day
Hey I like some of these things.
Ain’t no one remember Fable. :(
So when do we get into the unc wars over what games beat others? My 50-something ass has zero fond memories of Halo 2, but I played the hell out of UT and Q3 back in the day.
Me, playing Kotor 1 this morning
Y’all kids ever play Time Splitters? Anarchy Reigns?
pro skater 3 not thug 1+2 why?
Hell yeah, gimme gimme!
I'm not offended by the word slop, it's interchangeable with "thing" to me at this point, unless it's "AI slop" then it's something specific and bad.
My birthday is this week, and I am not ready to think of myself being the age I am about to become. I’m older than Frank Drebin, for fuck’s sake.
Bro, THPS3 is not the peak, the peak is THPS4.
The word slop was misused almost immediately upon hitting the wider internet but this is really stretching it
To me Halo is still babies first fps kiddy game that I refused to play as a pompous teen.
More and more I see people nostalgic for things that to me were the lame new thing that babies(derogatory) played.
Our bones get more brittle by the day.
As someone who's been a hardcore FPS fan since Wolfenstein 3D:
Nah.
Halo 1-3 were just that good. Those games, Doom 2, FEAR, and RTCW remain the old kings.
I hit unc early then.
> SA2
> slop
Guards, send this man to Pumpkin Hill immediately.
What a well timed post, as I will stop being 34 tomorrow!
Have I mentioned how much I’ve come to hate the word ‘slop’ lately?
I miss when words meant things
Halo 2 is the GOAT this is Rage bait
I'm 25 and I talk about a third of this chart all the time, am I an old soul?
Most of this shit you were not born or too young to play when it came out
If you have older siblings or role models its more common. Or you had older tech when you were young.
I like 80s music because of my dad despite not being alive in the 80s. I like cowboy bebop but I didn't watch it when I was 5.
Speaking as a 23-year-old, sometimes we feel spiritually old.
This sub is great but there are some people here who definitely fit into the "My life peaked when the PS2 came out"
Old vydja good kids. Remember that.
To be fair that's basically everywhere. I've seen tons of posts that hit the front page that are basically "MEMBER WHEN GAME GOOD" and it's like Crash Bandicoot or some other PS1/PS2 game.
I saw some dude say "Bro back in the 80s or 90s no one gave a shit about race. We were friends with everyone back then."
Holy fuck that's just not what it was like. Can't wait for the 2010s nostalgia to come in.
I have a suspicion that a lot of people who are like that either didn't actually grow up during that time period and are pretending or they grew up in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood where the small handful of black/asian/hispanic/minority kids in their classes were largely left alone.
It's funny how many people say shit like that when interracial marriage didn't reach majority approval in the US until almost exactly 30 years ago
Forever a proud UNC
UNC art.
Missing the CD covers of Infest (Papa Roach) and Sinner (Drowning Pool).
What is UNC?
I believe it's a term for someone older. A shortening of "uncle" by people too dumb to realize you don't capitalize every letter of an abbreviation (you capitalize the letters if it's an initialism), where they should be writing "unc" or "Unc" at worst.
actually UNC stands for UNC's Not Cool
Ah, a recursinym.
Ha ha thing old
I'm getting waaaaay too old for this sub
34? Bruh, I'm not even 30 yet and these are all heat
I love all the media there and I’m 25, also an uncle… so am I Unc
Wait wait wait! STOP. IM 34!
Im ngl i hate when white people, yeah i just magically know the race of the person who created this, just take a word with a clear definition and use it improperly
You mean UnKHNO.
At least I know I'm gonna be in good company when I turn 30 this year. Man...
We should call this unclecore
I may be unc, but i'm cool unc
HECK YEAH!!! SLOP ME UP!!!
All of this slop? This shit ruled.
I am a uncle and I talk about at least half these things
"YOU HAVEN'T SEEN DEATH NOTE?!"
itt: dad jokes about the UNC acronym
34? I’m 31 and all I can often think of is StarCraft Sonic Adventure 2 and Berserk.
Nothing but handcrafted brilliance being called Slop. This will fuel our conversations for days!.
I forgot how good us uncs were eating.
I remember when Force Unleashed was actually kinda divisive
Now I think we all wish we could go back to those days.
if you can't bankrupt yourself on mtx through it then is it even a real video game anymore
This sort of modern discourse is so fucking bizarre to me. It's just people going "You're THIS guy who like THIS stuff" and disregarding them for no fucking reason.
It's not even anything problematic; it's just normal ass shit, but people really hate others gushing over the things they like.
I’m so tired of the word “slop.” It doesn’t mean anything anymore and is just a reductive way to describe anything without even describing it.
Turned 33 a few days ago and struggled a bit with the thought of half my life being over, go to my favorite funny subreddit and:
"YOU ARE OOOOOOOLD"
Ban wojack memes.
Nuh, boomer shooters, PS2 graphics horror games are real uncslop
Where is Dynasty Warriors 2-4?
oof, as an actual uncle I'm feeling this
I fight so hard to keep myself up to date on the shit I like specifically to avoid talking about unc slop xD
Fuck, I'm 2 years away from real unc status
Putting the Unc in Uncomfortable
