Santa Fe would request Amtrak drop the "Super Chief" name in March, 1974 due to declining service. It was subsequently renamed the "Southwest Limited," and later the "Southwest Chief." Rick Burn photo.

  • I think thats a first for me, I have never seen F45 and FB's together!

    F-unit is F-unit right

I admire your particular answer, its just that a F7 is a different thing from a F40/F45, too bad that perhaps very-low-volume economics meant there was never a F4#B available in the catalogue tho as in theory that would had been interesting to see if it would have the front end look the curvy same as the rear end does on the usual F45 units.

  • Sweet pic, great share.

  • F45's in freight livery; I suppose they couldn't take advantage of the Santa Fe's 90mph+ trackage.

If they are dark blue units I wonder what their maximum track speed would had been, as as far as I recall the only difference between blue and silver F45 was with both regarding to traction motor gearing ratio and the presence of HEP hardware [so basically a very simple job in the heavy shop]?

  • Great photo! Also admiring the large number of double slip switches in view.
