a) The US was going to build battleships;
b) They had (allegedly) assisted with the design themselves because of their aesthetic sensibilities; and
c) They were naming the class of ships after themselves
US conservatives would have been absolutely foaming at their mouths with outrage. Fox News would have ridiculed the idea and called them rampant narcissists.
Edited to add:
Also, Trump claims these new battleships will be completed in only 2.5 years, despite the fact they will contain revolutionary technology, including hypersonic weapons and railguns.
The US Navy ceased funding railgun development in 2022, after spending $500 million on attempting to develop a reliable working version of a railgun, so I am not sure how Trump expects his new battleships to include railguns.
The US also just canceled the Constellation-class frigates that were in development for years, contained no new crazy magic weapons, and were drafted off an extant hull built by Italy!
The Trump class (gross) will never see anything beyond that stupid AI drawing.
2 of the class that were under construction will be finished and the rest of the program fully canceled. The new program is based off the USCG Legend-class cutter, but its a whole new program.
Christ, the last successful naval hull the US produced was the Arleigh Burke and that was almost 40 years ago now. But they're totally going to build a new battleship the size of a battlecruiser filled with railguns and lasers in 3 years.
Zumwalt was an expensive failure. The LCS hulls can barely run their own engines. the Tico replacement got cancelled. The Constellation wasn't even a US design and we still can't get it into the freaking water. The Ford is beset with constant tech issues, cost overruns and delays.
And all our shipbuilding capacity is basically maxed out right now.
The Ford class seems to be humming along nicely, now, all things considered. And honestly, with all these new weapons systems coming online, the Zumwalt class might actually be growing into its own. Hell, Id say just go back to building those.
(Because a ship that big with the RCS of a speed boat with a hull full of hypersonic missiles is just cool)
And also just extremely stupid. There’s a reason why battleships aren’t in use anymore, it’s because the only role they can actually fulfill somewhat well is the niche role of being water based artillery. They’re basically useless in modern naval combat, and being sea artillery isn’t a valuable enough role to justify the cost.
Reading up on this from the not article, it appears he's describing what we would today call a large guided missile cruiser or destroyer. So either we're about to build an obsolete class of ship to stroke his ego or we're about to slap a cooler name on a fairly mainstream ship design to get the president's sign off because he, once again, has no fucking clue what he's talking about.

The ship being proposed isn't even a Battleship - it's just a large (very large) Guided Missile cruiser with every "potential" weapon the US Navy has.
3 x as large (displacement) as current DDGs, while the USN struggles to build a Frigate...
All delivered in 1/3 the time as the frigate failed to even be built.
So basically they’re making a ship, calling it the incorrect name (because trump doesn’t know what a battleship is probably), making it way larger than it needs to be, and slapping on every possible gun cuz trump thinks it’s cool or something?
Literally sounds like the thought process a kid would have if you tell them to make a ship.
Anyone could hop on wikipedia, look at the loadout of a Ticonderoga, and immediately wonder why you'd need more displacement for a missile platform. Every keel laid for these ego-fluffing wastes isn't a keel replacing a Blue Ridge or Wasp.
Saying this largely out of concern from the (frankly unsubtle) signs that Trump wants to start one, but wouldn't water based artillery be extremely valuable in an invasion on overseas countries? I don't know much about modern day warfare, but I would've thought artillery would be a highly effective way to threaten a country, and being sealocked from most targets, it'd be much harder to do so via land
Thats why the US Navy has a fleet of floating airbases. Naval gunfire is impressive but requires getting a lot closer to the coast than a carrier does, and that makes it much more vulnerable to AShMs, USVs, mines, missile boats, submarines etc. A destroyer with tomahawks and an automatic 5 inch gun is enough for the occasions its needed and way cheaper
If your water-based artillery is in range of those targets, it’s also in range of counterbattery fire. Missiles give us standoff distance that artillery can’t match.
Designing and building a brand new, modernized battleship would be monstrously expensive.
Doing so in 2.5 years, far moreso.
Completing development of the railguns, laser weapons, and hypersonic weapons he is talking about would likely outstrip all of that, and that doesn't account for actually producing the armament, never mind all in 2.5 years like they're claiming.
Remember the first term where one of the primary goals was to funnel taxpayer money into companies trump liked by promising wildly expensive and uncompletable projects?
Yeah, this is the same thing but with "Part 2: Electric Boogaloo" slapped onto the end
I'm on some fandom military subreddits, they are usually level headed but love seeing military weaponry, and advanced technology.
OMG
They have been so shitting on trump and this idea lol it's so funny to see even people who appreciate advance tech are calling this out as such bullshit and incredibly dumb.
Everyday I feel more and more that we must be in a broken simulation. It’s the only way shit this monumentally stupid could continue to happen so often and somehow be defended by a whole group of dipshits.
I am sure (hope ? pray ?) that people smarter than me have thought this through. I was under the impression that big huge battleships were obsolete and we really needed a lot more smaller ships.
Here's the justification: big battleships need to be hit four times to be destroyed, as opposed to smaller ships that go down after being hit two and three times, respectively.
Okay so the hull is intact. How about the sensors, weapons and communications equipment? None of these things can be armored so now you have a blind, deaf and dumb boat that has to just go right back home assuming a submarine doesn’t sail up and torpedo it.—r/whoosh apparently
The logo is cracking me up. He’s so slim and fit looking. Can someone slap it on an existing ship and tell him it’s the new one? He won’t know this difference, and it will save some money.

If either Biden or Obama had announced:
a) The US was going to build battleships;
b) They had (allegedly) assisted with the design themselves because of their aesthetic sensibilities; and
c) They were naming the class of ships after themselves

Sure this is bad, but did you see Obama's TAN SUIT?!!!??
Dijon mustard
*tan ship
Do not insult the Great White Fleet.
He once held a cup of coffee while saluting.
Oh god it’s The Homer, isn’t it?

They didn't cancel then they are just deploying them without vls tubes, making them oversized corvettes

Sure, but they've only built 2 of them with no plans for any more.
And Fox News would have been right to do so
Yes, the point is that they aren't doing so now
Absolutely.
Instead they are pointing out squirrels.
The pandering to The Stain's fragile ego is pathetic.
As long as it’s armed with “TrumPedos”
Wouldn't this be monstrously expensive?

Trump sounds like the kind of guy who thinks that this tank was a good idea.
The parallels to Hitler's megalomania are a little hard to deny at this point. Of course he wants a bigly battleship. Bigger means better, right?
I hope no one shows him any 40k artwork because he'll be announcing how we're going to be building skyscraper tall titans next...

Trump class sounds like an appropriate name for a group of worthless ships that just waste money and do nothing productive.
He already addressed that: “We stopped making them for whatever reason, I don’t know.”- Trump
Saying this largely out of concern from the (frankly unsubtle) signs that Trump wants to start one, but wouldn't water based artillery be extremely valuable in an invasion on overseas countries? The problem is, is it valuable enough to justify having dedicated ships whos sole purpose is that role?
Yes, thats why we have guided missile cruisers and aircraft carriers.
The cruisers are a fraction of the size of what Trumps calling for and the carriers are, well, already there.
Edit: and too be very clear, are both going to be more appropriate for the job than whatever this is.
A barrage of modern, long-range missiles can do pretty much the same thing as old-timey, large bore artillery can do.
If your water-based artillery is in range of those targets, it’s also in range of counterbattery fire. Missiles give us standoff distance that artillery can’t match.
At the low end, yes.
Designing and building a brand new, modernized battleship would be monstrously expensive.
Doing so in 2.5 years, far moreso.

Currently railgun technology is a dead end
It simply doesn't matter how much cash you pump into that project the technical difficulties are insurmountable with current tech
A long term twenty year programme to work out new technology that might make it possible would be one thing
But this idea that you could have a useful functional rail gun in a few years is a joke
I'm sure many of his loyalist pedophiles are lining up to suck up as much money as they can to "develop" this weapon system.
Didn't you hear? Trump has made America great again, so all that debt stuff just magically got fixed.
You don't hear about DOGE anymore do you? Clearly they took care of it all and disbanded for that reason. /s

US was bit by Rabies.
I've been saying this for a decade at this point
We're living in the simulation being run that asks "what if the worst possible decision is made for society at every single opportunity"
It's literally just https://youtu.be/vV30irsal-w
We’re in the Weasel Timeline
Here's the justification: big battleships need to be hit four times to be destroyed, as opposed to smaller ships that go down after being hit two and three times, respectively.

Trump Class would make the Russian fleet seem superior
He wants them finished before he's kicked out of office and keel hauled for his crimes against the United States and its people lol
Where better to be keel-hauled than by his white elephants?
Good luck on that. The design phase alone is expected to take until at least 2030.
Trump would be in his 90s before this thing is finished.
At least most of the comments there are pushing back on this wildly stupid idea.
Name should be as someone else suggested over in the german sub:
USS Fat Orange Turd
Expensive, time consuming, obsolete.
When was the last time we even built a battleship? The 40s?
This is a vanity project that I can only hope doesn't harm our national security and out sailors lives at risk.
On the plus side it got this stuck in my head.
