I'm just trying to work out if this is the beginning of the end.

Over the last week or so, my preference to use old reddit seems to be be frequently ignored, reading mail/messages doesn't seem to mark them as read. It' all getting a bit flaky. Just me? Deliberate work by the admins, or just your run of the mill bugs?

edit looks like it’s a mixed bag

  • Mine has been totally normal. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Same. I am not facing any issue. I would even pay for keeping it this way.

The day that Old Reddit goes away is the day I leave!

  • try clearing your browser cache

Yeh. Consensus seems to be it’s just me. Wonder if Safari Mac’s anti-tracking stuff is causing issues

  • Yeah it's been that way for a few months at least for me. I use old reddit redirect and chrome mask to make reddit play nice with Firefox -- it straight up wasn't letting me log in.

    Tangentially beehaw is pretty decent.

On mobile, redreader provides a nice clean interface.

    Old reddit redirect?

I use an old.reddit redirect extension on Chrome. It forces the old.reddit page to load no matter what reddit tries to say.

It's an addon for Firefox. Userscripts are also available that could handle the redirect.

    Beehaw is cool

  • I didn't see any changes, reading things marks them as read.

  • Mine has been fine.

  • I don't know about that stuff, but using RES to open pictures and videos on old.reddit is pretty crippled, unfortunately. It almost crashes my browser, causing it to freeze up for 10-15 seconds (or more) at a time. I'm pretty close to uninstalling it and giving up on it for good.

Something must be wrong with your installation or settings. It literally never happens to me in Brave or Firefox on Linux or Mac. Try it in a different browser or a fresh browser profile.

Hmm, ok I'll give it a shot. I'm not the only person this happens to. I've talked to others about it in /r/bugs.

I may have just experienced what you were talking about. There's some new code on new reddit that doesn't work properly with old reddit. It doesn't seem to happen as much when browsing from old reddit because old reddit uses the older site code, but it does occur when trying to view some of the newer site content on old reddit, like when clicking on crossposts that are dependent on the new code.

While using Firefox/Brave or using Chrome?

Mostly in Firefox since that's my primary browser but I expect Brave and Chrome have the same issues. I don't use Chrome proper though.

  • Slow burn accounts but they are what you think they are. Plus several others.

What the hell? They read the same, what’s up with them?

Holy hell they’re all the same age too

There's twice as many as the last time I checked this post.

It’s wild when you catch it live, like sure I run into bots (what I see mostly is troll/bot farm account, where an actual human/political agitator os running them/ reposting talking points) a lot but god damn, this is the first time I’ve seen low effort AI level bots talking in “slang” as an elder millennial might do when trying to recreate the conversation of a gem alpha

  • Nah dude, def not just you—old Reddit’s been acting hella sus lately, feels like they’re low-key trying to force everyone onto the new one.

  • You have to click the unread reply now to make it mark as read rather than how it used to work of it being marked as read when you opened the unread page.

I don't know if it's related, but I always used to have the option to "hide read comments" until a couple days ago. I tried resetting everything in the comments module with no luck. Today, randomly, that feature started working again.

  • It only counts as 'read' for me if I click on it

I actually like this change tbh since I do quite a bit of RP on here and can't always reply to everyone at the same time

  • I've been using old.reddit + res in Firefox on Windows and Linux without issue.

Sounds like you're on MacOS though: Safari can be kind of janky sometimes, but if you wipe your cache/reset Safari, that'll probably at least temporarily fix it.

  • Yeah, old Reddit’s been a little weird for me too lately. Not sure what’s up.

  • I’ve had a few issues too, but they seem to come and go. Might just be random bugs, but who knows with all the changes lately.

This is consistent for me, across different browsers. Most odd. I have to type old.reddit.com to get to old Reddit. The preference does nothing.

  • Yeah, been having the same weird issues lately. Glad it’s not just me!

  • I've been using old Reddit too and haven't noticed any major issues on my end. Could be a cache/cookie thing or maybe just bad luck with bugs lately. Hope it sorts itself out!

Cleared cache, cookies tried different browser, same result. The only way I get old reddit is by manually typing old.reddit.com

  • reading mail/messages doesn't seem to mark them as read

Definitely happens with me, only way to get it to count as read is if I click the reply button.

    Definitely feels intentional

  • it's just you.
