Been kinda quiet here, so I thought I’d drop my top 10 favorite songs and why. For me, I like tend to enjoy melancholy songs that have meaning and solicit emotions, either positive or painful. Guess that’s why The Sundays and The Smiths are my favorites over the past 40 years. Love to hear your thoughts and/or yours as well.

1 - Though the Dark: For me, everything beautiful about Harriet, and her vocal range, comes out in this song and often listen to it on repeat.

2 - Can’t be Sure: The OG and worthy of being #1 on any list

3 - Life Goes On: To me an honest song about living your life and not letting anyone bring you down. I’ve also been very vocal against our pill pushing society, but I don’t mean/want to start a debate

4 - Goodbye: “Just give me an easy life and a peaceful death” puts this in the top 5 by itself. Aside from my family’s health and happiness, that’s all I truly want in this life.

5 - I Kicked a Boy: Not sure why but I’ve always loved this song and raised my children to not be the ones people wanted to kick

6/7 - Love and Cry: Two songs that have brought out so much emotion and tears over the years, for two different reasons

8 - Monochrome: I honestly don’t know if Harriet had any siblings, but to me this is a song about a loving and happy memory of her sister and family and very relatable as I get older

9 - When I’m Thinking of You: Another song where I just love Harriet and see her as being so happy, in love and content with life.

10 - My Finest Hour: I just love belting out “and come to your house for tea” (along with “and fill it full of flowers and a bottle of old cologne” in Certain Someone) and I don’t even drink tea!

  • Nice picks! This is probably mine...

    1. Summertime

    2. Homeward

    3. Goodbye

    6. More

    7. Cry

    8. Here's Where The Story Ends

    9. When I'm Thinking About You

    10. Skin & Bones

Agree with Homeward, there are times that song hits hard. Their 40ish songs are so good, the list can easily change

Absolutely it can, and often does!

  • Impossible task, but I do want to shout out “Gone”. One of the great “extra” tracks by any band ever. I spent 3 months in Europe with the first two albums on my Walkman (I’m old, this was before S&S even existed) so those two albums are full of incredible memories and evoke tremendous nostalgia. Hence not being able to do a top 10 for that reason alone.

Yes, Gone is fantastic and belongs on a Sundays top 10 list without question!

I'm obsessed with gone. The imagery of the lyrics, the enchanting and hopeful yet gloomy mood, Harriet's high notes.

Feel bad Gone wasn’t there as it is a great song. Moods change as do top 10s depending on the day. Ha

    1. You’re Not The Only One I Know

Nice to see another person with Summertime in the top 10. I don't care if it was a radio hit, that song is SO catchy!

If someone had never heard of The Sundays and I had to play 1 song to hook them, it would be Summertime. Definitely catchy and grabs one’s attention, especially for a first time listener.

  • OP, I have a much different view of “When I’m thinking about you,” though I agree it is a great song and easily in my top 10 also. My read of the lyrics leads me to believe that this is a sad song- she doesn’t want to wake because she only gets to be “with” the one she misses while sleeping. It’s a song of loss and missing, I think. “I hope I never wake, when I’m thinking about you.”

Wow you just destroyed this song for me! Just kidding but I’ll have to listen to it with that perspective. For some reason I envisioned her happily sleeping, but I can see it as a song about loss and dreaming of the past. Thanks for your perspective!

  • All excellent, but inaccurate lists without She.

“Or has she stayed too long” another line I just belt out no matter where and how I’m listening to it.

She is fantastic. That one rotates into my top 10 for sure.

  • Oh I love this so much!!! And I LOVE that you've got Through The Dark on there because that's one of my favourites too!

This is super hard because I love every single song by them but here are my current top 10, because they are always changing:

    1. Homeward
    2. Gone
    3. My Finest Hour
    4. Wild Horses (I know it's a cover BUT IT'S SO GOOD)
    5. Through the Dark
    6. Goodbye
    7. Here's Where the Story Ends
    8. Nothing Sweet
    9. Monochrome
    10. I Feel

    And bonus 11: On Earth!

(Goodness it really IS impossible to choose only ten out of them all!)

Homeward and Summertime go back and forth as my fav Sundays song!

They're both such good songs aren't they!!
