At least GLOW closed in a way that while it was intended to have one more season, it ended in a way that it could have been potentially written as the end.
I have a feeling it's Disney dragging into feet because they lost money on the last star wars films and marvel movies
I think it’s more a problem of scheduling. By wanting all Hollywood based filming done in Burbank now, it no doubt created a scheduling logjam with everything that was already promised space. And since The Orville ideally needs one of the biggest stages on the lot…
If you don't have at least one beloved series that ended abruptly, with the fans asking for more so they could at least get closure, then you're not a fan of sci fi.
For me it's I Am Not Okay With This, and Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, in addition to ones others have mentioned.
Don’t forget about mr “trust me bro” on here a few months back who said that Peter Macon told him at dragon con that Seth said that he was about halfway through writing s4.
I thought Scott Grimes announced at STLV that Season 4 was confirmed? More recently I thought I read the writers have finally started putting scripts together? Did I get this wrong?
Two years ago, Adrianne Palicki was on a podcast where she basically said that she wouldn’t be back for the fourth season because she had some issues with how it was run, including the long wait between seasons. She’s since done several conventions and panels where she sounds like she’d like to come back and is very positive about her time on the show. However, people with inside sources say that Kelly has been written out because more happened behind the scenes between her and Seth, so he basically fired her and replaced Kelly as a character. As for Adrianne, she has lately been saying she doesn’t want to upset anyone but that she doesn’t think there will be a fourth season. Given that others have said there definitely will be, and that she still seems to be in contact with most of them, I think it’s kind of her way of saying she’s not returning without violating an NDA.
My initial comment was simply agreeing with the OP that the picture of Season 3 getting ready to shoot makes me sad because The Orville is not going to be the same when it comes back. You asked why. I answered.
FWIW, at least in August he said this about why he made the show. Good talk.
.
FWIW, some folks who worked on the show remain hopeful. For example, in an interview posted October 26th, André Bormanis (science consultant, co-EP & writer) said "...we're hoping to do another season of [The Orville] sometime in the not too distant future."
(For those who don't know, the commenter above is the admin of a fan group on Facebook.)
Seth had also said recently that S4 is “when, not if.”
Or at least other credible insiders have fairly recently said Seth has said that. ... I wonder, is it known how recently was the last time Seth was known to have said it?
.
Off-topic note:
In discussions with Martin Gero who's showrunning a future Stargate revival show for Prime Video, it's been noted that that project was secretly in pre-development discussions with Amazon since circa late 2023, and Gero "started working on it pretty actively" in mid-2024.
Meanwhile, SG fans hadn't heard any substantial public news at all (other than one vague note from a 2023 Deadline report) ... until finally the new project was announced very recently (Nov. 19th).
Since long before the recent announcement, some commenters had given up hope for Stargate's return, while others chose optimism. ~ (Conversely some don't want a Stargate revival and were hoping it wouldn't happen.)
Evidently from examples like that, the passage of time does not eliminate possibilities.
As we know, some commenters have averred that the passage of time eliminates hope, and that The Orville won't return.
Time will tell ... but I for one choose hope.
"Hope is a choice" – said whoever said that (before SNW Pike said it).
"Never surrender dreams" – (the motto of JMS the Babylon 5 guy).
To be more specific, I’m one of the Admins of FB’s largest and most active Orville groups. We work in conjunction with Planetary Union Network, the official Orville podcast (they work directly for Seth MacFarlane) and Mission Log: The Orville from Roddenberry .com. A number of people from the Orville staff are members as well. Our sources are directly involved with the show or have direct personal connections to Seth. 😉😎
Planetary Union Network, the official Orville podcast
Some have wondered where else that officiality is publicly documented. AFAIK, other than P.U.N. itself, the only official public documentation source was a trio of tweets from @TheOrville in February 2019 (and those three tweets are still online, I just checked), calling P.U.N. the "official fan podcast of" the show.
Given that they are indeed official, P.U.N. was able to say in 2024: "The fact that our announcement exists is an official announcement" (in response to someone who would "remain skeptical until an official announcement").
Joe and I were burning up the Messenger lines that day…
If PUN works directly for Seth/Fuzzy Door, then that would be about as official as they could be.
We on the other hand are an actual fan group, but we’ve cultivated a great relationship with the people involved that we value a lot. It’s fun to see the likes of Jon Cassar, Andre Bormanis, Steven Lineweaver, Tom Costantino, Brandon Fayette and others participating in topics.
I miss this show so fucking much. When I was still living at home, this was one show that was actually appointment television for my parents and I. And to have a sci-fi show I could watch with my parents they actually liked made it that much more special. Something I could share with them. Soon after the show ended, a lot of the political shit started that drove a wedge between us.
It was a script that was turned into a novella due to covid filming restrictions. You can find it online it's called sympathy for the devil and it's very good.
Oh, I thought you meant something new. “Sympathy For The Devil” was originally released a few years ago on digital and audio, the print version was just dropped recently.
The novella is what would have been an episode of S3, and takes place between episodes 8 and 9.
Bad timing 😪 they could have had a real shot if they had just done a little more to make it a covid comfort show but it just didnt cross that threshold. That being said I really wish they would bring it back for at least one more season.
I am so excited to finally be able to watch this as it comes out. I missed it when it was coming out due to a lot of hearsay, but after watching the show my own I don’t like any other show sci-fi Wise more than the Orville.
At least we got a good amount of closure at the end of season 3. They didn't do us dirty like Firefly and GLOW.
...and Terra Nova, and Dark Matter, and Santa Clarita Diet.
… and Salvation, and Alphas, and Reaper.
Stargate Universe (We better hear if Eli lived in the new series)
and ALF.
And The Last Man on Earth
And limitless
People of Earth and Pushing Daisies
And Altered Carbon.
And Star Trek: Enterprise
Ouch. That one still hurts.
I think Alf got a movie to wrap it up.
Halo
Way to punch salt into wounds!
And my axe!
Santa Clarita Diet 😭😭😭
Still gutted about this one
It’s the one that never really heals.
Terra Nova, from what I heard, ended cause it was the most expensive show to make at the time. But ya would have been great for more.
Dark Matter still hurts...
Dark Matter?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4159076/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Matter_(2015_TV_series)
Excellent show. Started off a little rough around the edges but got better with every season.
I was so hyped at the end of the last season. Then gutted.
For partial closure, see Mallozzi's "virtual S4" via links here.
AFAIK, Mallozzi still hasn't given up hope to get an eventual pickup for his concluding DM miniseries pitch.
And Dark Angel :(
There was a novelization that was supposed to wrap it up. It was. Not great.
Dark Matter still hurts...
Clearly the whole Kaylon arc was speedrun, but better that than letting it be cast into the void.
Their back story made ME want to commit genocide.
It certainly did an effective job of showing why they were so paranoid.
The kids' absolute glee in torturing their Kaylon was so awful.
Bad parents
And My Name is Earl and Clone High twice
I'm not familiar with the acronym GLOW, unless that's Glamorous Ladies Of Wrestling.
That's the one
2017 Netflix series, a fictional story loosely based on the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.
At least GLOW closed in a way that while it was intended to have one more season, it ended in a way that it could have been potentially written as the end.
I have a feeling it's Disney dragging into feet because they lost money on the last star wars films and marvel movies

so it is officially not happening, a 4th season?
All signs currently point to no fourth season
That would be incorrect. Even Seth says S4 is “when, not if.”
At this point, I don't care if they announce it's been cancelled, I just want Seth to say fucking anything.
With the new season of American dad coming out in February he might be too focused on that
His involvement in it is primarily his voice work at this point. If it’s coming in February his work is long since done.
Yeah, it does. We are now going into 2026, and there's no sign of a season 4.
The two kids in the show are practically adults now.
They can always do a timeskip.
Maybe no visible sign for those out on the street. Seth says it’s “when, not if.”
Wasnt there talks of a 4th season?
Not really. The closest we got to anything substantial was like a third-hand account of something Scott Grimes may have said at a convention last year
Don’t forget about mr “trust me bro” on here a few months back who said that Peter Macon told him at dragon con that Seth said that he was about halfway through writing s4.
He did say it. The video is on YouTube and it’s pinned at The Orville Facebook Group.
Yup. He literally said it at the panel. But that dude hates me for some reason.
In fact he said it during the concert. Almost as an aside, but thankfully it was caught on at least one video.
There are books.-said in the saddest voice possible.
Still is.
Three great seasons with a proper ending and it didn't go on too long and get stale. The Orville was a gift.
I thought Scott Grimes announced at STLV that Season 4 was confirmed? More recently I thought I read the writers have finally started putting scripts together? Did I get this wrong?
Confirmed but not yet given a where and when.
💯
That's development hell baby. The killer of good things.
Gone, but not forgotten...
Me too… even if it does come back, it won’t be the same.
Why not? Same writers. Almost same cast. Same producers.
Kelly won’t be there. Not the same.
Sorry, but why wouldn't she be there? I'm not totally caught up on Orville news
Ditto

Probably about the size of it. I know what happened and all I can say is it should never have happened but…
No. It will be different in that respect. Life happens, even in a fictional world. The writers will make it work.
I’m sure the writers will do something. But I’m allowed to not like it.
Of course you are. But I’m hoping that your dislike will be earned, not predetermined. 😉
My initial comment was simply agreeing with the OP that the picture of Season 3 getting ready to shoot makes me sad because The Orville is not going to be the same when it comes back. You asked why. I answered.
You did. I responded. My hope is that ultimately you may be pleasantly surprised.
I got so excited for a second until I realised 3 comes before 4 and this wasnt seasom 4
I miss my family guy in space. Some of the deepest media of our time
Urgh 😪 Can't believe it's been so long. God I miss this show.
Never understood why Seth is so quiet on it, like don’t be a prick and say something
FWIW, at least in August he said this about why he made the show. Good talk.
.

Ah yes, I remember them.
Mike is a great guy too.

I wonder if the Orville is the favorite thing he does.
Consider one of the earliest things Seth did was a Star Trek fan film when he was 16…
2020 seems so long ago and a different world.
I miss this show so fucking much. When I was still living at home, this was one show that was actually appointment television for my parents and I. I truly feel like we'll have some good news soon!
I just want one final season to wrap up some of the story loose ends like Claire & Isaac, the Kaylon, Earth & Moclan…. S3 was FANTASTIC
Disney is promoting the novella, so they haven't forgotten it completely.
What’s this? Haven’t heard anything about this…
It was a script that was turned into a novella due to covid filming restrictions. You can find it online it's called sympathy for the devil and it's very good.

I know, but I've seen ads for it on Reddit so that gives me help.
I got excited for half a second before I completely read it.
Thanks for not lying.
Bad timing 😪 they could have had a real shot if they had just done a little more to make it a covid comfort show but it just didnt cross that threshold. That being said I really wish they would bring it back for at least one more season.
Whose name is under the Seth MacFarlane sticker?
I think it says: Camera: Jeffery C Micah (or Migah)
I just googled and it's Jeffrey C Mygatt
The DP’s name
💔
Timeless
I am so excited to finally be able to watch this as it comes out. I missed it when it was coming out due to a lot of hearsay, but after watching the show my own I don’t like any other show sci-fi Wise more than the Orville.
Finally! Like what? Were y'all in another galaxy far, far away or what?
Honestly, I’m ok with it having ended. It was amazing StarTrek, it had a great ending.
Now just release the damn S3 on optical so I can hold onto it.
is it official it is over? Did they announce it somewhere?
It hasn’t been officially announced, but it’s been what…5 years? There’s been no further talk?
The signs are kinda there.
Arent they currently filming season 4?
They expected to but Disney threw them yet another curve by no longer filming at Fox Studios. They want everything in Burbank.
I thought I'd heard something just recently.
The rumor was that the writers room was back together. No solid confirmation though.
Yes! That's what I heard. I remember now. Thank you!
I give up my first born child just for Seth to make a new season, or like some final Orville movie to end the whole story for good
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous,
and I'd give my eyeballs to see S4!
