Hello everyone,
I’m here to provide an update on the NSFW/18+ situation on this Subreddit. As many of you are aware, Reddit designated our community as 18+. This was justified, as we were, objectively, hosting a lot of pornographic content.
Since that time, we have been in communication with the site’s administration to try to correct this. People like their image permissions, after all, as well as all the other privileges that have been taken away. Below is the administration’s first response, about one month ago, to our initial request for information and guidance:
As can be seen, we were directed to remove NSFW content from the subreddit and try again in several weeks. Following that, we changed the rules so that NSFW content would no longer be permitted here. After a few weeks, we sent in another appeal to remove the 18+ designation from the subreddit. It was rejected. When clarification was requested, the following message was received:
Based on this message, it was decided that we’d need to remove every bit of NSFW content in the subreddit’s history to get the admins to accept an appeal. I, personally, spearheaded this effort.
In the past 30 days, I’ve manually removed over 4,000 posts, including explicit pornography, suggestive artwork, and thirstposting rants. I was committed to doing this selectively whenever possible, so that we could spare innocent posts. We hoped that the subreddit could be made available to all ages before the release of Canto 9.
16 days ago, I made another appeal. It was rejected. I asked for clarification.
There was no response. In the meantime, while I waited, I continued removing posts to clean it up more. I sent another request for clarification to the admins, in case there was some issue with the prior one.
Once again, I received no reply. Another appeal to remove the 18+ designation was also rejected around this time. Having grown a little miffed by this, I had u/Sspockuss, our head mod, send a message himself on December 8th. He had, earlier on, been able to get some feedback, so we hoped it might work now. This is the response we just got today:
To summarise: First, we were told to moderate the sub, with a focus on banning NSFW content for a few weeks. Then we were told to remove as much NSFW content as possible. Now we are told that we’ll have to keep this up for around 3 months for the administration to even consider accepting an appeal. The goalposts have shifted drastically.
We don’t know what to do at this point. Obviously, getting things fixed by Canto 9 isn’t on the table anymore. Honestly, I’m starting to doubt it can ever be fixed. It would have been nice to know about this “3-month” thing before I nuked a significant portion of our community’s posts. That’s not to mention how there might be something about my account making the admins ignore me, since I still have yet to get a reply to either of my two requests, while Spockus got one in a few days.
We are still trying to figure out what to do next. This post is just so that we can keep the members of our community informed. That being said, given the situation, we’ll be interested to hear your ideas and opinions.

I mentioned on another post that touched this subject.
There are other subreddits who are larger and older than this and operate the same way this one used to be (meme subreddits that also contains NSFW and not just cropped porn, but straight up explicit content) and yet they haven't been branded as NSFW subreddits with all the restrictions that label comes with.
This sub has been commited to comply with absurd demands the admins who keep moving the goalpost and all for what? Are we supposed to keep waiting and see if they have "mercy" and remove the label when they aren't consistent with wich subreddit gets it?
I assume that a lot of people who found the image in comments restriction to be a deal breaker have already jumped ship to another subreddit. And I think that based on those interactions with the admins the only thing we can do is to just accept that we are not getting rid of that NSFW tag and go back to how we used to be.
But that's just my opinion, I will respect the mods decision on this matter.
I'm going to make a bit of a guess but here's what I think happened. During the stroke war drama on r/limbuscompany earlier this year, people who were against NSFW content being posted realized there was a not-insignificant amount of people who shared their view. They ended up "losing" that drama after we rolled back those NSFW rule changes on main sub. They then got salty and turned their attention to this subreddit, and started mass reporting it until admins gave it an NSFW tag.
tl;dr there's a lot of people in this fandom who are EXTREMELY anti-NSFW and it's causing problems. Most other gacha communities don't have this and are just 95% gooners.
The fact that was this year and not last year makes me shrivel up and prune like a raisin left out in the sun too long

Yeah, like I said, I have my doubts that it's even possible (if it is possible, it would be lovely for them to just say so, preferably before I wasted hours of my life removing posts).
We're actively thinking about what to do, but this came at a really rotten time overall. A lot of us are simply busy, and Reddit comes after real life responsibilities. I just wanted to get out this update because the users deserve to know what's going on as well.

Canto 9 not being until after Christmas lowkey a good thing because if it came out on the 15th like originally speculated we would've had a massive manpower issue with staff on both subreddits due to too many people being busy with exams. We got so lucky here lol.
Idk if I'd go this far but it's very clear to me that the first admin I talked to really screwed us here. We decided on the "conversion to sfw" course of action based off of what they told us. If we had known it was at LEAST 3 months for a change to even be CONSIDERED we would've just been like "ok this sub is nsfw now". It's unfortunate.
I blame admins for this entirely, if it wasn't obvious.

It’s over. This sub’s truly an outcast to the Reddit admin. They’re truly an unloving admin . And they seem to be unconfronting to our mods. This sub NSFW Tag may just remain unchanging. Yet we brought it to ourselves so we can’t the evil defining them. This is The heartbreaking. The NSFW Tag appeal dream is ending. And we should just surrender and witness. If only we unsevering from the original goal of this sub.

We've been having issues with admin intervention all year. On mainsub we had one of our translators get permabanned sitewide by admins (our translation scene has been fucked ever since) and then ghosted when they tried to appeal. We also had our (at the time) most active member of the moderation team permabanned during the stroke war drama. Lastly, we had to start enforcing an (in my opinion) very draconian interpretation of rule 1 (civility rule) on both this sub and the main sub due to constant admin intervention. It's just...frustrating as fuck. I'm not going to go as far to say it's targeted, but I will NOT deny that we have been having significant problems with admins constantly influencing the Limbus subreddits. I am assuming r/fishmaell will eventually have a problem like this in some form if they keep growing.

Forget about the Angela Corn post, we've looked at every post and comment you've made. Plenty of people were expressing their criticism in good faith and in civil manners. You were creating drama for the hell of it.

One of the mods got into an argument with some users about the rule enforcement and then the users decided to, instead of being mature about it, go through the mod's profile trying to find something report-worthy to get them banned. They succeeded. It fucked us over for a couple months since said mod was doing like 40% of the work on the subreddit and then they got zapped with no warning.
Are you talking about BagelBearer…? The same guy you said made up bad rules on the spot without talking with any of other admins? Who also said that the current rules that are on the main sub are not a compromise, unlike banning even mere thought of boobs, since Limbus new IDs are too sexualised?
nah I've seen this happen on so many 'buddy' style subreddits. It's very difficult to appeal these things

After their first run in they were probably flagged. It's like any sort of inspector, once you have a history if they're not dealing with active cases they're probably checking in on previous ones (In this case communities they've flagged) to fill the time.
It's not, for a handful of reasons the admins are just slowly tightening the noose on anything that could be considered nsfw. It's been going on for several years now, people just like to bury their heads in the sand because 'lul it's just porn bro, get it somewhere else'.
Damn. Them Admins must be boring considering this is 18+ and just about everyone(Hopefully) are or should be 18 or older. Then again, LobCorp was rated 15+ despite the uhhh… various things that happen to our poor Agents and Clerks(Clerks are fodder lets be honest)…
But yeah, pulling away from that, Those Admins(Not our Beloved Odyssey Admins) really seem to be a pain in the ass to moderate a community that is pretty much filled with us goober adults who definitely did not Distort.
The worst part is being an NSFW flagged subreddit inherently is not that bad. The problem is with all the restrictions that come with it. Image comments are gone (which were a huge part of sub culture) and even worse governments worldwide are implementing ID verification law BS which is resulting in a not-insignificant amount of people getting locked out of the subreddit. I live in Canada, why do I have to deal with clown governments from countries I'm not even in making weird ass laws that indirectly kill communities I moderate? I wish Reddit was less American.

also, with this new information, i believe the intended meaning of the first admin's message was "moderate the community and remove as much of the newly posted NSFW as possible", probably not intending the annihilation of two years worth of post history in an unchained community. these people can't communicate clearly, though, nor can they coordinate with each other, so this is just a guess
You know, I wish they could have just communicated clearly. I was, as I said in the post trying to contact them for more clarification. But I guess they just don't want to answer my questions. But I also needed to get moving and not just wait passively, since getting things dealt with before Canto 9 was a serious goal.

That's certainly one of the possibilities we're considering, though we also already have a R34 sub for Limbus.
Like I said, we don't know what to do because there is no best option here. We'll be looking at all the comments for suggestions while we brainstorm.

I kinda expected it to go this way back when the nsfw was allowed, the reddit mods are super partial/unfair, and nsfw-driven servs get hit the hardest by them, although I still think the mistake was to allow nsfw in the first place, it's a shame to see all your good efforts being ignored, I hope things will change and your work will get rewarded eventually, good luck.

So basically nsfw was removed for no reason since after three months once you appeal again they will just say "oh its not enough try again xx months later", i mean, at this point the image reaction perms arent worth it
The whole idea of removing so much of the sub's history for only to be able to post images in the comments was literally never going to be worth it, now we lost 4000 for nothing. And even if we DID gain image perms it still would not have been worth it. The mods of this sub although having good intentions, I'm sure, fucked up with this one.
I was a day 1 believer the appeal would never work.
It wasn't just for image comments. This sub has been fucking dying because of this change. Too many countries are enforcing mandatory ID verification for NSFW and people understandably don't want to give Reddit their ID. We're kind of screwed here. The metrics have fallen so hard. We've lost like half our pageviews since the NSFW designation. :(
This feels strangely targeted towards the community.
First was Itch.io, then Steam, now Reddit. It feels like the big companies or someone is throwing money for everything to be [CENSORED] nowadays.
This has nothing to do with this though. They just flagged this as NSFW because their was a lot of porn posted here. And this label does nothing bad except for keeping people out who not want to see NSFW.
Now we have the usual case from miscommunication and the admins not trusting this community suddenly became SFW in a short time.

I've been watching silently from the sidelines, but I do hope it genuinely works out. Moderators from anything are known to suck ass, but all you can do is keep persevering. Thanks a ton for all of the effort and love you all put into this community. I definitely prefer this place over the main sub and I wanna see it prosper.

Reaction images were a major part of the subreddit. Killing it has removed a lot of the identity it has held. It's exactly why the r/fishmael subreddit is gaining traction while this subreddit has started to stagnate.

If it DID have a point and resulted in the NSFW designation coming off pre-canto 9 I wouldn't've cared much, but now it just feels like admins duped me and u/pillowmantis into wrecking the entire subreddit.

The R34 subreddit was dead at the time. We were trying to softly kick people over there over the course of a few months, and then like right after the R34 sub got set up this sub got slammed with an NSFW designation out of nowhere (we had no communication or warning from admins prior) and it just screwed literally everything up. We couldn't revive the R34 subreddit earlier because there was an extremely inactive headmod (very big security risk, as you probably know from the r/art drama recently) that u/PrecipitousPlatypus had to remove via a mod team reorder before we could do anything.

With how closely tied to the main sub this sub is... like at what point is it just easier to start a clean shitpost sub and port over the blacklists/bans? I feel like if this is marked as the NSFW shitpost sub there shouldn't be an issue having a SFW shitpost sub. It's not like it's anything out of the ordinary to see multiple shitpost subs for 1 community.

I assume all reddit admins are probably salaried employees, who are accountable to a manager. They probably don't care about this subreddit since it's potentially a whole lot more work if they unflag it as NSFW, it gets reported again, and they go through a bunch of meeting justifying their decision, explaining risks, and repeating themselves to each new manager that gets looped in. The funniest part would be one one cares about this sub either, just concerned about whether it'll happen again with a *larger* subreddit, I wonder why they're shifting goalposts, but maybe reddit's site-wide moderation department just doesn't have a single standard?

Ngl I'm a tad worried that at this point allowing NSFW stuff is going to be the death knell to this sub. Some people have really been against the idea of not posting porn here (because fuck everyone living in the UK or Australia or any other country looking to introduce a similar rule I guess), and I reckon the moment you allow that again they're just to swamp and spam this sub with it in retaliation to the point it becomes completely unusable. Even if you properly moderate that, I feel like it's going to irreversibly alter the attitude in this sub towards that sort of thing...and NGL I think I'd rather stick to a meme sub where I don't have to see shit like "detailed breast milk calculations" and have everyone act like this is a perfectly fine and normal thing to do. Already fought that battle once and I'd rather not get downvoted to shit to again for going "hey what the fuck"
At the same time to play devil's advocate, I also wouldn't be surprised if the reason Reddit moderation is dragging their feet is because like...this is anime gacha meme sub. With a fanbase overlap with certain other anime gacha games. You can see people actively bitching about these rules changes and we've had issues with this in the past. I wouldn't have much faith they're going actually keep being SFW either. It's not professional at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're just hoping you'll give up and not drag this out into a months long affair of constantly toeing the line, especially if they know about future changes to policies down the line that might make things stricter.

This sounds like a great way to get multiple members of main sub mod team banned and screw over that subreddit right before a major content release. Admins don't like when you evade their enforcement actions like this. We are NOT doing this. I can 100% hard confirm right now that this is NOT an option. There's other smaller Limbus meme subs anyways.
Some bans that happen to users on the subreddit happen because they attempted to Ban evade using alt accounts. This isn't any different with subreddits.
So doing this guarantees the death of both the main sub and probably the general Limbus Community on Reddit.

Main sub has never allowed this level of NSFW? Suggestive art is fine (we had a whole drama about this that I am NOT eager to revisit) but if actual hentai/porn is being posted, report it and it'll get taken down. I think a lot of the gooners have moved to r/LimbusCompanyR34 which is a good thing for every other PM subreddit.
