Help a girl out, please!

If the long walk itself didn’t end up only one winner, how would you theorize it would end? I’m thinking it wouldn’t be something cheesy like magically there’s two winners (shout-out to The Hunger Games), but what if there was a military takeover that stopped the event? Or a natural disaster that cut it short?

I may or may not be writing a fanfic and need some ideas for how to not kill off my characters. Any help is appreciated!

  • based on the book, where they say one walk was stoped for a time.i think even if the walk was stoped for a hurricare they would later resume it.

No, in the book Stebbins says the walk stops every year - once. He means that it only stops when there is one boy left. There is no example given for a walk that actually stops.

well shit, my bad, the translation on my language made it confusing a bit.

Ahhh sorry. Sometimes I forget people read translations.

  • A anti fascist insurgent/resistance/freedom fighter group ambush the walk and kidnap or liberate the walkers. If you're following book canon it would be televised and cause a really big scene.

Not a bad idea! Thank you!

  • The military is on the Walk's side, so I doubt that would ever end it, but a natural disaster would be an interesting twist. Although, I imagine even if something like a hurricane came through they'd keep it going and if they both died, that'd be the end of it 😂

Survived the Long Walk, died in the hurricane! 😅 I was thinking maybe like a flash flood? The military abandons them and they hide out in a building?

  • War were declared. Mid walk. The soldiers and big bad suddenly have more pressing matters at hand.

  • In the book the crowd was 40 deep on either side for over 50 miles. The crowd could gain sympathy for say Stebbins and Garraty after they duel for 8 hours. That many people could overwhelm even armed soldiers and shuttle the boys to safety.

A similar thing happened at the end of Victory, a movie about a soccer match between the nazi National team and a bunch of war prisoners. The final scene is probably on YouTube. Worth watching.

    Here I found it:

I was thinking of a military insurrection and the walkers run off into the woods. Then there’s extreme weather and the government announces them as deceased so they can focus on the insurgency. A bit dramatic and all, but subtlety isn’t exactly my strong suit haha
