It’s not that I like book Art having once been a night rider, but it does add depth to his character that was missing in the movie. That this sweet guy who everyone likes is also a person who did something awful when he was younger makes you think about why he volunteered for the Long Walk. His odd death fascination and con artistry with the dime flipping also make him more interesting than the nice religious guy from the movie.
You absolutely hit on a lot of the key points here as to why Baker is such an intriguing and beautiful character. I think he's painfully overlooked and reduced down to "nice, southern" by people who weren't actually paying attention while reading. I hated what they did to him in the movie.
Book!Baker is an interesting character with southern gothic vibes and haunting final lines. Movie!Baker is... there. Honestly one of my least favourite changes.
I wish they kept his fascination with death from the book in the movie, but I'm also fine with them removing the detail of him being a former KKK member.
How are people actually voting on movie baker?? There is absolutely no substance to him, they completely ruined one of the most beautiful characters king has ever written. Yeah people are entitled to their own opinion but I'm afraid people who believe Baker is portrayed well in the movie need to go back and reabsorb the book.

If Baker was a former KKK member in the book, does this imply he was white in the book?
I’m pretty sure they describe him as blonde in the book and Barkovitch never called him the n word so I think it’s confirmed.
I just realized, imagine if Barkovitch called him the n word in the movie, even if it had occurred off-screen
Then he definitely wouldn’t have as many fans and sympathizers.
Yeah, I think it’s likely he never even used the word at all, he’s not truly bad, just troubled and has a hard time making friends.
Baker was a youthful looking boy with blue eyes, blonde hair and freckles. It's not just implied but outright stated.

Wasn't he described as a redneck in the book ?
