It's excellent. The scarcity of resources, need to avoid most combat, and fantastic story makes for the best survival game I've ever played. I could only compare it to metro series.
Coming in late but both Last of Us games are brilliantly written and acted with top notch gameplay (especially part 2). Don’t let the haters keep you from playing this! I know I’m more deep in than most people, but I promise you it’s impactful and moving. Give it a shot and I hope you enjoy it!
I loved it. Every friend I have that’s played it loves it. Definitely worth a playthrough. I replayed them both recently and I wasn’t a huge fan of the 2nd when it first came out but when I played it this time I liked it much more. The first is still better though in my opinion
Yeah it’s good. I think ppl don’t like the second one because the story wasn’t satisfying in many ways but I always felt that last of us was never supposed to be a happy game. It’s brutal and depressing but a powerful story imo. Gameplay is better than the first but pacing feels too slow.
In my opinion? Absolutely. The last of us 1 and 2 are legitimately some of the most impactful games story-wise that I’ve ever played, and the actual gameplay and mechanics are good too. It’s absolutely worth at least trying.
I love the 2nd one as much as the first one. Anyone who says it’s garbage is just plain wrong. Just because they don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s garbage it’s just not to their taste.
Just play the first one and its one of the best games i ever played, everyone tells me that the second one is less interesting and fun to play because the second character something like that
I enjoyed both for sure, I definitely think the first game was more engaging story wise but the second game had better gameplay. Both are absolutely amazing, the biggest discourse regarding the second game is some of the story developement but it’s worth playing because a lot of people still likes it(me included).
Yes they are both excellent. It’s not like playing a game it’s like living an experience. The combat it brutal and the pacing is absolutely spot on. 100% recommended.
Personally I think it’s very overrated and prefer the uncharted series to it. Even after playing it multiple times it’s like a 7/10 for me. Still a good game but not the circlejerk some people make it out to be
Money? We replayed the games we had growing up because we didn’t have the option to just go grab a new one whenever we wanted. We got new games maybe 2x a year at most
Its 5/5 I think, the first one. Some sections can be frustrating, but I still think its a 5/5. Story, acting, art, music, cinematics, all top notch. Gameplay holds up but isn't the main draw.
Don’t listen to the people complaining about the story. Both games are phenomenal. It’s really that good. Go into it blind! It’s one thing I wish I could experience for the first time again (but replaying it has been fun too 😅)
I liked the first one. The second one was pretty good as well, but the story in my opinion was a bit underwhelming. At the end, who is really the villain?
Aside from what I personally think about the game, both are definitely worth playing.
Just play it on playstation plus if you can and form your opinion.
People on here fucking hate it just because of part 2 alone but. Im the minority that likes both parts but yeah dialogue is where the game shines imo, gameplay is good especially in part 2.
I like narrative heavy games so thats my personal preference.
Definitely a well made game, but if the story clicks for you is definitely a personal thing. Gameplay isn't so far removed from uncharted, but reigned in and no big action set pieces.
It's a good game- well-designed environments and stuff like that- but how good is a matter of personal opinion.
The stand-out part is the storytelling and the performances. Although based on a fairly generic premise, the story and characterisation are exceptionally good, which is extremely rare for the medium- a lot of video game 'stories' are very much secondary to the gameplay. The performances are flawless.
There are still plenty of people out there who think video games are still exclusively for children, so I'm very happy when games like LOU or RDR2 work hard to tell stories that are worth telling.
The narrative is superb. The gameplay is not all that varied - basically stealth takedowns, mixed with the odd 'oh shit' encounter when you have to either run or fight. This is mixed with exploration. But it's extremely well done, the gameplay is tight and the world is an interesting, if depressing, place to explore.
It's good that it's not a fairy tale, but it tries to be one. the main theme is based on the idea that revenge is bad, and the game forces you to feel bad for Abby, but it seems that it didn't work. Like most players, I don't care about Abby, and it's not because of what she did, it's just that I'm not interested in this character, I don't feel attached to her i didnt finish the game because the Abby part took too long its not what i wanted when i bought this game i get the idea but its not working
They're ok action games with rough downtime to slog through. Lots of slow walking and other time wasting. Most people just show up for the narrative though.
I like the first one. The story and characters are enough to over look some of the more basic gameplay
The second one not so much. Its not bad but it was just miserable the whole way through, I get thats kinda the point but I dont play games to feel like shit. Pursuing a thing past any sense of reason kinda did it for me. But it is a matter of taste, I know alot of ppl that like it. The gameplay in the second one was really good but the story wasnt so much for me.
I'd recommend them both. They both are dated in terms of gameplay, but the overall story is deeper than most games. I have some issues with the character "changes" in the second one, where I jusy wanted to run my own character off a cliff, but I grew a much different opinion by the end
1st one lacks quite a bit in gameplay but makes up for it in story development as you go. 2nd one has excellent gameplay and overall, a pretty good story, though it can feel like a bit of a slog at times. Definitely a great game and series to play.
At this point in time, it is no better than a lot of similar games that came after it. If you have played ANYTHING like it, it might seem boring, redundant, or even underwhelming. However, when it was first released, I had NEVER played anything like it. I literally stood up and applauded in a room alone after I had finished it. It was one of the greatest story games I had ever played!!! Part 2 is like a crazy 70's revenge story in that same universe that is just as good...don't let anyone tell you different. Start with part one and see how you like it :)
I enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s got a great story and characters. Gameplay is decent enough but the combat loop gets old…which isn’t too bad because the game is like 8 hours long.
Because the first two times I get bored within 30 mins and left which I don’t believe is enough time to properly give a game a go. But I kept getting dragged back by how much it’s hyped up and I don’t want to miss out. Last go I played for 4 hours and I’m satisfied in saying the game is boring af now
Probably better than breath of the wild, but I've never played the last of us and didn't like the breath of the wild, so I guess that's not saying much. :P
They are fantastic games if you accept what they are. Which is linear survival horror shooters with in depth elements of stealth. Their presentation, graphics, atmosphere, story and polish are top notch which is to be expected with Naughty Dog. It’s just the gameplay, while super polished, is not too deep. But what it does it does amazing. The gunfights and tension when sneaking is really good.
Yeah you’re right. It literally just boils down to whether you enjoy cinematic and slower paced games. The stealth and combat in 2, is the only game to come close to MGS V imo. It beats MGSV in terms of realism and brutality. You kill an NPC, and their friend cries out their name. Kill a dog handler, and the dog will get sad trying to wake them up. Then when you’ve cleared every enemy but one, the final one will get to their knees and plead for their life, where you have the choice to either brutally murder them with your hands/melee weapons, shooting off their limbs with a shotgun, or setting them on fire with a Molotov.
The looting and traversal in between can be tedious and a slag at times, but almost always worth it to get to the next “arena”.
Look at it like this. roughly 75% of ps sales, are fifa and cod casuals. Would that game be somewhat grand, when they play only fifa? From a PC gamer view, oh boy its not even worth pirating
Part 1 is great although there are several scenes where the writers could have gone deeper into the unfolding relationship. A lot of parts are ommitted and have to be filled in by the player, this might have been intended but I think it would have been even better if some of the scenes or the Dialogue had gone deeper or longer.
My mate missed three straight weeks of five-a-side at Goals because he was playing The Last of Us after work.
I went round his for a beer sesh and yes, the game was rather delightful.
Jokes aside, it really is that good if you like story-heavy games. If you’re in it mainly for fast combat or open-world stuff, it might feel slow. But for characters and emotional gut punches, it earns the hype.
Both were masterpieces. The first was perfect in all areas IMO.
Most people are followers so when part 2 came out too many people latched onto hate instead of forming their own opinions.
Whether you like the direction of the story or not it was told and presented as well as anyone could have and the gameplay is some of the best in a game ever.
you must be a child. who gives a fuck about brands? a good game is a good game and a shit game is a shit game. plus, different strokes for different folks. what does you opinion matter against anyone else's?
That good as in, a borderline spiritual experience only possible by a game so perfect that it pushes forward the entire medium of interactive entertainment, like the internet pretends it is?
Of course not.
Is it an extremely well made game that should absolutely be experienced by fans of narrative driven games?
The first game is of a broken man who finds happiness again through his surrogate new daughter and their memorable moments and adventures. The 2nd game is just killing waves of people until you get to kill another side character. The way the MCs talk is either about the objective or listening to Neil druckmann’s self insert talking about how cool he is and how much he gets laid. The story sucked.. bad guys kill Joel, so we go kill them in revenge. Abby’s “redemption arc” was a total joke too.
I've played basically every major single player story game.. rdr1 and rdr2 multiple times, spiderman 1 and 2, every uncharted, every god of war, both horizon games, ghost or Tsushima and yotai, watch dogs, ghost recon, etc etc etc etc.
proofed the point, i give ya that with rdr2, though i dont like cowboys themes, horizon is easily "sonys best IP, but oh well. Cyberpunk 2077 and Eldenring wipe the floor with everything you mentioned though. And aside from Story or "hyper realistic graphics" that you seem to need, gameplaywise Zelda BotW/TotK and Bananza are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.
I love the story in horizon, I found the combat tedious and kinda boring. Elden ring looks dope, but I dont love souls like games and I don't have a switch, but I know Zelda is dope. Zelda is also an RPG and not really comparable to last of us or rdr2.
Rdr2 and last of us 2 have easily the best, most emotionally impactful stories I've ever experienced
Can I ask which part out of curiosity? I don't remember it being a very horror oriented game, just some suspenseful encounters due to difficulty at times
First game is a masterpiece and the second game is what I call a miserable masterpiece. It's excellent. But miserable to experience and ill never replay it.
i actually agree... and it's not that the game is bad by any means. but the gameplay is completely average. the story is what makes it stand out. i had fun playing it but i literally pulled 1 all nighter and beat the whole thing. it's very short. the story is delivered just fine in a tv series.
I've honestly never heard that before. I'm not a huge fan or anything, the game was okay. But that journey and relationship bonding experience that is the whole purpose of the game is definitely better relayed through the video game medium.
It's excellent. The scarcity of resources, need to avoid most combat, and fantastic story makes for the best survival game I've ever played. I could only compare it to metro series.
It’s good but it’s not out of this world amazing. A lot of recycled stealth scenes with the same old recycled zombies, but still pretty enjoyable.
Not really
[deleted]
Not even in the top 1000
All time great
Coming in late but both Last of Us games are brilliantly written and acted with top notch gameplay (especially part 2). Don’t let the haters keep you from playing this! I know I’m more deep in than most people, but I promise you it’s impactful and moving. Give it a shot and I hope you enjoy it!
Absolutely. One of my favorite games!
Honestly, I feel like the discourse would be enough to convince me to play it. I didn't know it was still so polarizing
Yes, but it's more of a movie than a video game.
Yes
1 better story. 2 better gameplay. Both great.
The Ps5 and Pc versions of 2 also have No Return, a roguelite mode for fans of the combat like myself.
I thought 1 had better story and gameplay compared to 2
No, gameplay is boring
Story is decent though so just watch the series
What you smoking lol
Cordyceps spores
no, ladder moving simulator with that typical sony feel
Story is crap but it plays really solid
Lmao what is this take
First is a classic. 2nd is awful.
2nd is leagues better lol. You’re just emotional
🤣🤣 right.
abby is one of the worst gaming characters lmao
Abby is exactly the same as Ellie, which is the point of the game
Gameplay is mediocre, but people really like the story. No comment on the sequel.
i disagree and would say the gameplay is really good. i do play on grounded mode though.
1 is. 2 is dogshit writing.
Your boy Joel deserved it
I loved it. Every friend I have that’s played it loves it. Definitely worth a playthrough. I replayed them both recently and I wasn’t a huge fan of the 2nd when it first came out but when I played it this time I liked it much more. The first is still better though in my opinion
it is one of the best games ever made
Yeah it’s good. I think ppl don’t like the second one because the story wasn’t satisfying in many ways but I always felt that last of us was never supposed to be a happy game. It’s brutal and depressing but a powerful story imo. Gameplay is better than the first but pacing feels too slow.
What an adult, logical take. Refreshing
I really enjoyed it a lot
It was good. Story was overrated, gameplay was underrated, atmosphere and acting was as advertised.
In my opinion? Absolutely. The last of us 1 and 2 are legitimately some of the most impactful games story-wise that I’ve ever played, and the actual gameplay and mechanics are good too. It’s absolutely worth at least trying.
Rather play Days Gone the gameplay is far better and it's open world. TLOU will put you to sleep.
Naah, dont listen to that guy. Days Gone is a great game and definitely worth playing but TLOU is far superior

Both are absolutely amazing, the biggest discourse regarding the second game is some of the story developement but it’s worth playing because a lot of people still likes it(me included).
Have you played the game, or not? Your OP is confusing based on this comment. Did you mean TLoU 2 in your OP?
I play the first tlou game not the second one
It's a bot
Yes they are both excellent. It’s not like playing a game it’s like living an experience. The combat it brutal and the pacing is absolutely spot on. 100% recommended.
Personally I think it’s very overrated and prefer the uncharted series to it. Even after playing it multiple times it’s like a 7/10 for me. Still a good game but not the circlejerk some people make it out to be
You’ve played it multiple times but think it’s overrated. Yeah right.
It is
There are literally thousands of games out there. Why keep replaying one you think is mid? I don’t get it.
Money? We replayed the games we had growing up because we didn’t have the option to just go grab a new one whenever we wanted. We got new games maybe 2x a year at most
I don’t. I haven’t played it in years
Y3s, they are both great games and you should give them a chance.
Both are 100% worth it, both from gameplay and storytelling standpoints
Its 5/5 I think, the first one. Some sections can be frustrating, but I still think its a 5/5. Story, acting, art, music, cinematics, all top notch. Gameplay holds up but isn't the main draw.
id just watch em honestly i love their stories but i dont enjoy them as games at all which is strange since im a sucker for zombie games
Yes. Do both and experience them. There’s really nothing else like them
Never really understood the hype myself.
First one I'd say is above average. Part 2 is a hard pass.
The rattlers seem to be the overarching main human villains of the second game
I beat both games over 6 months ago and I still think about how bad the ending was at least once a week
I've never seen a story fumbled so hard in my entire life
The ending to Empire Strikes Back was terrible too, right?
Haven't seen the star wars films tbh
Maybe just me but for me at least anyways they are the best games ive ever played. Story, gameplay. The emotions it brought out of me. Nothing better.
Agreed
Yes
Game yes show no
Cap, 1st season is great. ND added great stuff that should have been in the game in the 1st place

I dont like it

They are both boring misery porn to me snd the gameplay is way to slow. Enemies are annoying instead of scary. I never got the appeal of this game

This is mixed with exploration. But it's extremely well done, the gameplay is tight and the world is an interesting, if depressing, place to explore.
1st is cool 2nd sucks (but gameplay is pretty cool)
2nd is just as good but it's not a fairytale anymore
It's good that it's not a fairy tale, but it tries to be one. the main theme is based on the idea that revenge is bad, and the game forces you to feel bad for Abby, but it seems that it didn't work. I could agree that Abby is not interesting enough as a character but the whole thing worked for me anyway
Your opinion is wrong
Because what lol
Cause the story is complete garbage
Part 1 really is that good. It's a great game.
They're ok action games with rough downtime to slog through. Lots of slow walking and other time wasting. Most people just show up for the narrative though.
No
First one is amazing 2nd one is meh for meany reasons
I enjoyed the Netflix show... The gameplay imho is terrible.
There’s a Netflix show? I thought there was only an HBO show
They never watched it just a parrot cuz the show is grabage first game is great 2nd is ok maybe less then ok
Oh yes of course, I was just waking up and wasn't quite there yet 😅
Personally love both games
I enjoyed the first one very much but didn’t play it till 2021. It took two tries for me to get into it.
I played the second one In 2024 got half way but I just felt bored and haven’t completed it.
Watch the cut version on YouTube. The gameplay is bland and repetitive.
Just watching it like that u wont lose anything about the story but u Will Dave a couple of hours of your time
I like the first one. The story and characters are enough to over look some of the more basic gameplay The second one not so much.
I would not say either game has "dated" gameplay at all.
TLOU1 has you lift up a ladder, walk it around to cross a gap where it can only be placed in a single location
also getting ellie on the plank on the water was kinda poopoo
It's the controls, to be more specific. They're not bad, but enough difference to know that it wasn't made this year
The second gameplay has some of my favorite third person gameplay of most story games. I would not call tlou2 gameplay "outdated"
1st one lacks quite a bit in gameplay but makes up for it in story development as you go. 2nd one has excellent gameplay and overall, a pretty good story, though it can feel like a bit of a slog at times. Definitely a great game and series to play.
The story is pretty good gameplay not so much. At the time it released I didn’t think the gameplay was anything better than ok
yes. it's very good. peak storytelling.
I didn't think so but any first party Sony game is never looked at objectively.
It's not bad by any means. The story is cool. The gameplay is mediocre compared to most games out there.
Yes. Play it now, especially if you are a parent.
Still the best game of this kind, together with pt2.
You can get the game for like $20. Not that hard of a sell.
It's a stealth action zombie apocalypse cover shooter. It has good combat, compelling characters, and a cool world.
The game, yes. The show.. is ok
It changed my life bro, you need to play it if you are a gamer
Interesting story, nice graphics, pretty boring gameplay imo. Worth it if you like story games, I couldn't beat it though, got bored.
This here. The game play is a slough.
I love the gameplay, personally. I beat it like 8 times
One of the very best games ever. 1 was great but 2 was even greater
2 is one of the greatest games I have ever played from a story perspective. I was absolutely hooked from start to finish,
The first game is in my top 5 Greatest games of all time yet I have never played the second
Same bro
Its good but definitely overhyped.
Nah it’s fine. I’ve played it once and I did enjoy it, but I never touched it again and didn’t pick up the second one.
Infamous is a better Sony series, when I reflect on those times
Infamous has way better gameplay.
Yeah
The Game? Sure, the Show? God no....
It really is. If you have a PS5 I say it's a must-play IMO.
Yes.
I really enjoyed the first one, I saw gameplay for the 2nd one and didn't interest me
You should give it a shot! Most of the gameplay mechanics are improved in part 2.
I enjoyed the story of part 1 and the gameplay of part 2 more.
Ah I'll sit this one out, I've seen enough to know I have zero interest or attachment to any of the new characters or outcome of their stories lol
I enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s got a great story and characters. Gameplay is decent enough but the combat loop gets old…which isn’t too bad because the game is like 8 hours long.
2 is decisive, but I loved that one a lot.
Meh. Overrated.
No it’s trash imo. I’ve tried to play it 3 times and always get bored af
Why tf do you keep playing it then 😂😂
Cuz of y'all Sony diehards swear is God's dick on yo ass.
Because the first two times I get bored within 30 mins and left which I don’t believe is enough time to properly give a game a go. But I kept getting dragged back by how much it’s hyped up and I don’t want to miss out. Last go I played for 4 hours and I’m satisfied in saying the game is boring af now
Yes
Probably better than breath of the wild, but I've never played the last of us and didn't like the breath of the wild, so I guess that's not saying much. :P
No
They are fantastic games if you accept what they are. Which is linear survival horror shooters with in depth elements of stealth. Yeah you’re right. It literally just boils down to whether you enjoy cinematic and slower paced games. The stealth and combat in 2, is the only game to come close to MGS V imo. i prefered watching it on youtube instead. one of the only games where i skip the gameplay and stay for the cutscenes.
this should tell you enough OP, its just a movie, not really a game
Both games combined are my favorite games of all time, play them!
Part 1 is great although there are several scenes where the writers could have gone deeper into the unfolding relationship. A lot of parts are ommitted and have to be filled in by the player, this might have been intended but I think it would have been even better if some of the scenes or the Dialogue had gone deeper or longer.
Great games
I love the first but the second was meh for me
My mate missed three straight weeks of five-a-side at Goals because he was playing The Last of Us after work. I went round his for a beer sesh and yes, the game was rather delightful.
Imo
part 1: 10/10
Part 2: 20/10
I still think about part 2 randomly in odd lonely moments.
Jokes aside, it really is that good if you like story-heavy games. If you’re in it mainly for fast combat or open-world stuff, it might feel slow. But for characters and emotional gut punches, it earns the hype.
Kinda depends on what you usually enjoy playing.
TLoU1 was perfect in every way.
TLoU2 was the same, except the story. Shite decisions were made.
Nah everyone was just fucking with you
Nope, it was just a big mass delusion. Also, Believe it or not, water is not wet
Also the roguelike minigame is incredible in TLOU 2
The first game is a masterpiece, but pretty old now. The second, not so much
Depends on your own preference.
Me personally I felt dissappointed when reaching the later chapters, or seeing the actual ending.
Not really. Both are totally overrated. Part 1 was ok but not nearly as good as ppl say. Part 2 is just a trash woke propaganda.
I skipped 2 cuz the first one was too boring to finish. But yeah it's way over hyped.
the only correct answer here. Sonysheeps being loud, like always
What do you mean?
Yeah
Not really. Both games are extremely overrated. The first one is way worse gameplay-wise compared to second one though
I liked 2 better
if you like storytelling and a cinematic experience, you'll like it. if not, then you still might but it is a game influenced by cinema mostly.
Gameplay by itself is still excellent
oh absolutely. but judging by the comments, nobody seems to like it in here for some reason. it got so much recognition for a reason
cuz its mid af? but how would sonysheeps know better
you must be a child. who gives a fuck about brands? a good game is a good game and a shit game is a shit game. plus, different strokes for different folks. what does you opinion matter against anyone else's?
okay
I did not enjoy it. I played through and didn't like the combat, platforming, or stealth. None of the gameplay clicked with me.
No. Play more games. You can like it for the voice acting and its story but the gameplay is as bland as a vanilla wafer. 😆
That good as in, a borderline spiritual experience only possible by a game so perfect that it pushes forward the entire medium of interactive entertainment, like the internet pretends it is?
Of course not.
Is it an extremely well made game that should absolutely be experienced by fans of narrative driven games?
Definitely.
you kid, but sonystans really think of the first point
First game was incredible, the 2nd is boring as hell though. They try to redeem it with fun gameplay but it didn’t do it for me.
Boring??? The second game is easily more intense and immersive with incredible set pieces and level design and a far more complex story
That's.... Certainly a take
Sorry, I just.. I want that 30+ hours of my life back dammit
That's wild. I've played it 4 times through and will definitely be playing it more than that.
have you play any other game yet? In your life? Sonysheeps be adamant af about mid games. Did naughty dog buy everyone?
I've played basically every major single player story game.. rdr1 and rdr2 multiple times, spiderman 1 and 2, every uncharted, every god of war, both horizon games, ghost or Tsushima and yotai, watch dogs, ghost recon, etc etc etc etc.
TLOU2 is elite
proofed the point, i give ya that with rdr2, though i dont like cowboys themes, horizon is easily "sonys best IP, but oh well.
I think they're a bit overrated but at least worth playing through the series once
it’s an amazing journey, i love the game easily in my top 3 but there are some horror section in the game that made me too scared to replay the game
Can I ask which part out of curiosity? I don't remember it being a very horror oriented game, just some suspenseful encounters due to difficulty at times
when we first fell down the elevator shaft. imo its much scarier than the encounter with ratking in lou2
First game is a masterpiece and the second game is what I call a miserable masterpiece. It's excellent. But miserable to experience and ill never replay it.
It makes a better show than a game.
i actually agree... and it's not that the game is bad by any means. but the gameplay is completely average. the story is what makes it stand out. i had fun playing it but i literally pulled 1 all nighter and beat the whole thing. it's very short. the story is delivered just fine in a tv series.
Extremely incorrect take.
its absolutetly true, how much gameplay does the game has? considering even the 20th remaster pro plus lgbqhdtv+ edition + dlc, half an hour?
An opinion cannot be incorrect.
Extremely odd take
Not at all. People who feel this way are generally afraid of downvotes so things become a bit echo chamber-y.
I've honestly never heard that before. I'm not a huge fan or anything, the game was okay. But that journey and relationship bonding experience that is the whole purpose of the game is definitely better relayed through the video game medium.
Eh the show is already long enough. Dragging things out in the game is just painfully boring.
and sonysheeps are the loudest on the interwebz, right next to applekids
