Caught a beam, then the entire machine "rolled" up.
Edit: actually looks like the ex was chained down well, the hydraulic cylinder(s) probably broke on impact and the boom was free to go where physics wished.
It didn’t fit under the beams, it broke through the first one or two. The first pic it is traveling away from us, the truck facing the camera is the tow truck.
No, it was being hauled away from the camera in the first pic. The red and black truck facing is the tow truck, the truck on the other side of the bridge is the one that was hauling the excavator.
Also if some part of the boom caught a bridge beam behind the end, tipped the boom up, and then the end of the boom caught the next beam and got shoved up through.
Edit: it was being hauled away from the camera in the first pic, it broke through the first beam or two and the next one shoved it upward as the truck had lost enough speed that it couldn’t break that beam.
that's what i'm thinking. It hit the bridge initially, and something with the momentum or maybe it broke the chain, and the whole thing lifted up and got caught up at the last moment.
that's really the most likely situation i can think of
Bro. I have never driven anything bigger than a U-Haul and if I could get that rig into gear I’d at least be a step ahead of this driver because I could tell that my load is damn near taller than the bridge I’m approaching.
If not totalled, they have to messure for days, to even find out where to beginn with straighten things. Perhaps cheaper to make one out of this, and an other with burned engine compartment.
The cat is dead. It might not have been torn apart but all the hydraulics are destroyed and there's likely a lot of steel parts that have yielded past their elastic limits.
Yeah I kind of do agree with some legislation making these people pay for the damage. It's their responsibility to make sure they're load is done properly and if they don't do it then they should be held responsible. This happens way too much and it's costing people way too much money. Do your job correctly or face the consequences.
What do you mean legislation? It already exists. If we destroy public property they will for sure come after us for damages. If a trucker hauls a large load improperly, whether they cause damage or not, they are held responsible. The only way this firm gets away with this is if the bridge was marked incorrectly.
I agree and think the fact is crap, but that's on lawmakers to fix. Unfortunately, they are all focused on keeping their grifts going, so we're hosed...
As a taxpayer, I wouldn't want to bail out the error of a private company for stupidity, assuming that the government did its job in ensure all signage is accurate and present. Gotta know your load.
Don't most of these companies hire logistics companies to plan the routes for them and have saftey cars that escort the truck too? They should be the ones footing the bill.
Wow it's lucky that nobody was on the bridge at the time. Imagine driving along and then all of a sudden some shit just pops up out of the road. Would your brain be able to react in time?
Amateur hour. I've never seen an excavator loaded with the boom towards the front. Always load it towards the back and tucked in. It shouldn't stick up much more than the cab.
An overpass close to us just got hit. With it out, some people are driving 7 miles to get where crossing the bridge got them. It was open a week from the last year long repair, and this time every beam was damaged, the truck made it out the other side. So a complete new bridge this time.
What? How is it even possible?
Caught a beam, then the entire machine "rolled" up.
Edit: actually looks like the ex was chained down well, the hydraulic cylinder(s) probably broke on impact and the boom was free to go where physics wished.
I was thinking the same thing, this wouldnt be possible if the cylinder hadn't broken free. Id love to see how they remove the ex from the bridge.
At least the cylinder looks reasonably unharmed.
How much pressure is that thing under? Enough to blow through the deck of the bridge without being helped by the momentum of the truck on impact?
With the excavator's engine off, virtually zero pressure, except for pressure generated by the weight of the boom.
I thought the tow truck in the first photo had been pulling it, but no the digger was going forward and stabbed the arm up into the bridge

It didn’t fit under the beams, it broke through the first one or two. The first pic it is traveling away from us, the truck facing the camera is the tow truck.
that... doesn't seem physically possible
the beams are all uniform heights
But the road isn't always uniformly level. Drive through Louisiana some time.
okay i could see that argument. Maybe that's the only thing that makes sense😅

No, it was being hauled away from the camera in the first pic. The red and black truck facing is the tow truck, the truck on the other side of the bridge is the one that was hauling the excavator.
Okay, it THATS true, then it all makes perfect sense. That makes way more logical sense than of these theories
It is. You can see the brake lights of the trailer just beside the guy standing by the tow truck’s open door.
Also, the open door has “OWIN” on it, most of the word “TOWING”
yep. i see it now. it makes total sense.
you can easily see it once it's been pointed out. thanks for clearing it up for me, and everyone else!
Just another case of dumbassery on display!
Biggest clue is that people drive on the right side of the road in the US, and that's where the accident occurred.
You would never be moving forward and be on the left side, relative to the direction you're facing.

That‘s how you know its good.
„If you mess up, make sure its so fucked up nobody can explain it.“
Wind can blow those arms up if they’re not fully engaged. That’s why you see excavators being hauled with the arm facing the rear of the trailer.
Helpful. I was wondering “how do you not notice when loading…?”
Apathy or ignorance is my guess
Height of stem vs space between stem and bridge
Bro. I have never driven anything bigger than a U-Haul and if I could get that rig into gear I’d at least be a step ahead of this driver because I could tell that my load is damn near taller than the bridge I’m approaching.
This could be an ad for Caterpillar’s durability. That thing went through some concrete.
Trucker's insurance is gonna be pissed. Wrecking a whole bridge is expensive.
“You hit a what? With a what???”
Yeah, but it’s gonna have a hellava headache in the morning.
If not totalled, they have to messure for days, to even find out where to beginn with straighten things. Perhaps cheaper to make one out of this, and an other with burned engine compartment.

Curiosity killed the CAT
But satisfaction brought it back!
We did it better in Hays, KS.

Damn!!!
Is this a thing that happens often in Kansas?
Twice that I know of, but that feels like often enough.
Hays don’t play!
Yeah I kind of do agree with some legislation making these people pay for the damage. This happens way too much and it's costing people way too much money. Do your job correctly or face the consequences.
In California the labor and man hours are billed to responsible parties in at fault accidents
Isn't this why they have insurance? That's how they're held responsible.
What do you mean legislation? It already exists. If we destroy public property they will for sure come after us for damages. If a trucker hauls a large load improperly, whether they cause damage or not, they are held responsible. The only way this firm gets away with this is if the bridge was marked incorrectly.
While the insurance will pay up to the limits of the policy, the minimums required wont cover the cost to replace a bridge.
I agree and think the fact is crap, but that's on lawmakers to fix. Unfortunately, they are all focused on keeping their grifts going, so we're hosed...
This is definitely a company that will be shut down by the end of the week. And then reopened next week under a different name.
That is ridiculous
Why? You break it you buy it
yes being responsible for the damage you cause to others/public property is ridiculous…/s
Could not tell you, but I'm sure it's someone's job to check the route!
Ok, so you are agreeing to pay all my legal costs for the rest of my life? Because if so, I'll be back in a bit.
Land Shark in the second picture
"Candygram!"
I’m 59. That’s why I get this comment!
A testimony to engineering and build quality of Cat Excavators
I’m here to do the demolition, where do I unload?
Wow it's lucky that nobody was on the bridge at the time. Imagine driving along and then all of a sudden some shit just pops up out of the road. Would your brain be able to react in time?
It's also lucky the bridge didn't collapse, the excavator took out a pretty good junk
r/cantparkthere
And I thought “Storrowing” was bad.
Now it’s a Kansas Passthrough
Great advertising for CAT durability
That is not gonna buff out 😬
The truck facing camera is the tow vehicle. It was traveling away from the first pic
What trucker even half worth his salt doesn't look at that thing and ask the clearance...it's obviously too high for most US roads.
Just happened in Washington state on I-90, they had to demolish the bridge
Upscavated
Durka durka......
The driver definitely slapped the straps and said "That ain't going anywhere." It's the only way it stayed on the trailer.
This is why the arm is usually at its lowest position during transport
Kitty got claws
Impressed
Dun dun dun...no one exact catashark
Land Shark
Imagine having to make that phone call. Hey boss, you will never guess what just happened.
I’m sure that’ll get fixed eventually
This happened in Michigan two times this year on the same bridge. One northbound one southbound
I don’t think the insurance company will cover you from now on.
Should buff right out - just need a little elbow grease.
Was delivering this here bridge, ran out of gas...
Don Quixote at the wheel ...
One guy ruined the travel over a bridge, and on an expressway.
Amateur hour. I've never seen an excavator loaded with the boom towards the front. Always load it towards the back and tucked in. It shouldn't stick up much more than the cab.

BIG oof.
"Here's your sign."
Land shark!
It's Kansas... they can just pray on that and it will be fine.
I'm guessing we don't EVER get to see a pic of the driver or hear his last name. For reasons.
California CDL perhaps?
