I work in insurance and make the joke "its not like u hit a bunch of parked lamborghinis so this damage is minor in comparison" to anyone at fault and concerned to try and ease their mind.
While I cannot speak for American insurance policies, most Australian third-party insurance policies begin at $20 million and can extend to $32 million.
American insurance policies are usually a lot lower.
The person you responded to was talking about the fact that these insurance companies fire their customers if they do too much damage, and those customers usually have a hard time finding other insurance based on their driving record.
$20 fucking million?! and what are the premiums for twenty mil in coverage??
shit, do i need to move to australia and start doing personal injury work there? around here most (auto) liability policies are ten or twenty thousand
you're really telling me the average person in australia is rolling around with $20,000,000.00 in liability coverage? why?? you guys have government health care, the vicious cycle in america of high medical bills justifying high insurance payouts isn't present there! what would this twenty mil be paying out for? surely not medical bills...just pain and suffering, loss of wages, etc?
Here in Italy on my car insurance covers for 50m €, the whole insurance price (with other items like tow truck/animal damages/windshield dmg/etc...), is 432€/year
Auto insurance limits in the US are typically around $100k for property damage, sometimes less.
People can certainly purchase more, but many simply purchase whatever the minimum for their state is (which can be quite a bit less than $100k in some states).
I worked at an auto-body shop in high school.
Near the end of a normal workday I came in moved fleet vehicles did the trash and cleaned the shop.
Also dealership drivers would drop cars off and throw keys at me to park it for them as they want to pick up a finished car and leave.
Not exactly my job, but within the duties.
BMW guy parks in my work truck and leaves.
I take the keys put my foot on the brake and the car starts rolling. I panic a bit and I decide to tap the gas and the car stops.
It was at that moment I realized I had hit the clutch not the brake and the brake not the gas.
I was inches from clipping the BMW into 3 lexuses.
I turned the car off still inches from the Lexi(?) and the CFO walked out whom I promptly gave the keys to. That was the first time I had actually driven a manual.
Why do you think it’s an emissions thing? They’re everywhere in Europe, most countries in which have stricter standards than the US. The problem is they’ve been falling out of favor for nigh on 40 years in the states, and not enough drivers here want to drive a manual for makers to maintain separate production lines to produce them. I drive a manual as well, but I believe we’re down to <10 cars made or imported in the US that offer one stock.
I once rented a car from a lawyer who just had a squad of cars at his office to rent out. Random cars. He said he only had a manual available. I said no problem. He walks out to see me drive away because he could not believe I could. Guess he hadn't rented that particular car since he got it. It was trash but it worked for what I needed. Definitely nothing feels the same when you take out that part of driving. Even the most beautiful or expensive or unique machine lacks soul if you just make it an automatic. Paddle shifting tries but falls short.
Irish guy here, driven manuals all my life except for my last car which was a dual clutch automatic. Manuals are a pain in the arse compared to automatic, especially in traffic. I bought my last vehicle used because prices have gone to hell, but I'd be all over automatics if I had the choice - couldn't get the vehicle I wanted used with an auto box unfortunately as the vast majority of regular cars here are manuals. The BMWs etc. are majority auto alright, but not VWs, Toyotas, Hyundai's etc. This car I have now has a really tight 6 speed in it and I constantly put it in 3rd when I want 1st, stalling it in mid drive (happens with 2nd and 4th too) - this has never happened me before and doesn't happen in my wife's car, maybe it's a feature of this gearbox, bit it's fuggin painful as well as dangerous.
I agree, all my/my gf's cars have been manuals but driving my parent's automatic is so much more pleasant. We've just had shit boxes so far and it'll probably stay that way for a couple of years lol.
Weirdly though, I don't think I'll get an automatic motorcycle or scooter even though that's my daily commuter. There's something different about a manual bike that makes it more fun for me, even in traffic (though I suppose I can usually filter/lane split through the worst of it).
I guess you also don't need to love your hands/feet from their normal positions when riding a manual bike, vs having to constantly move your foot off of and onto the clutch and your hand off of and onto the gear lever in a car. It feels more natural and less hassle on a bike.
Have you looked into readjusting the linkages for the shifter? I bought a brand new VW GTI in 2023 that was horribly aligned from the factory. It always wanted to go into the gear on the right like yours (1st to 3rd, 2nd to 4th). The linkage was set too high causing the shifter to sit ever so slightly to the right of center. Was super easy to adjust. Just an idea if it keeps bugging you!
on a long drive through the country or whatever, sure
in the 80%+ of driving situations i encounter where it's slow, stop-and-go traffic, dotted with stoplights, traffic jams, etc? manual is a fucking nightmare, enormous work and a pointless aggravation of my sciatica
I’ve driven both manuals and automatics all my life. My personal car which I drive daily to work is a manual, and commuting in a manual is hell. I still wouldn’t get rid of it for the world. Whenever I have open roads it is instant pleasure. An automatic is great in traffic but just so lifeless in any other setting. Paddle shifters literally feel fake to me since you can’t stall out. I generally forget to downshift with them and the transmission software just downshifts and then puts it in neutral automatically lol. Maybe someday if life circumstances permit I will get an automatic for commuting, but I will never give up having a manual transmission.
1970 is when emissions started to be put in cars. By 1977 cars were absolute dogs, no pickup whatsoever. Around 1986 they started to get more horsepower back. Now it's mileage that is what they are concerned about.
Most every one still makes them as far as I know, there is just less of them being made. Why would they make manuals when most people nowadays can hardly drive an automatic without causing accidents.
A manual car with a proficient driver is more efficient than an automatic. Automatics gas all the time and you need to brake, where as you can get a manual car to just roll with momentum.
Good manual driving is like one pedal EV driving. Use the accelerator when required and engine brake to slow down. That's how I drive a manual daily. 🙂
The ultimate goal of driving is to touch the brakes as little as possible. Every time you press the brakes, it costs you money. You lose acceleration and need to use more fuel again, which costs money. You add wear and tear on the brake system, which costs money to replace.
A skilled driver knows when to glide to a stop, and when to hit the brakes. Most people are all brakes and all gas, very few actually use momentum and prediction.
I worked in a dealership body shop just after high school.
Had a couple cars in for work that the guys forgot to tell me didn't have anything more for brakes than wishes.
Fortunately the worst result was slowly dropping the front wheels into the ditch off the end of the parking lot pavement and having to get the guys to lift the front end up to rescue the car (dealership owned used car so nobody really cared)
our record was a 20 year old in an old shitbox with a $500 third party property damage policy that ran into and wrote off a 1.2 million dollar Ferrari.
Fair enough. Whenever I've had to fill out insurance applications they've asked how much any previous claims might have paid out (at least some of the times) so i suspect it'd have a fairly hefty effect on quotes here.
They’re going to have to learn a couple different languages to describe how fucked he is. I feel bad for him though, that is a bad feeling without it involving classics
When I worked in a garage ages ago, it was not auto insurance that covered damage like this. It was a specialized garage insurance, which I suspect is something like property insurance.
I would think an auction house would have some kind of coverage like this, wouldn't it? Not saying that I know any better than you since you work in the industry, but the garage I worked in had me driving some really expensive cars at times, and my first question before I put my first Ferrari on the lift was "My liability insurance doesn't apply to this, does it?"
(I wasn't an exotic car mechanic. I did tires, oil changes, and brakes in a rich neighborhood in Los Angeles)
For cars like this, do they just have normal car insurance or should they have something else? Like the insurances you put on valubles like art and jewelry?
This’ll probably fall on the auction company’s insurance I would hope at least, but there’s a company called Haggerty that I have my car insured through. They specialize in classic/high end vehicles. You can only drive it so many miles per year but I can’t remember the limit off the top of my head.
Yes, Mecum will have business liability insurance to cover this, probably event liability, maybe E&O gets explored. Like others have already pointed out, it's nearly always the auction company and/or venue employees that drive the cars to the block, not the owners. This will be an unfortunate claim for Mecum 'twas my first thought.
My buddy’s lotus got rear ended at a red light by this kid. For some inexplicable reason he got the kids number and STAYED IN CONTACT for a while. Bizarre. Anyways that kid hit a Porsche a couple weeks after hitting the esprit and last I heard he wasn’t doing so hot.
My question to you is how fucked are you if you hit a lotus esprit and then a Porsche (I think it was a Cayenne) inside of a month?
It was a huge mess. I think the transmission mounts had to be refabbed or something, plus the fiberglass work. It took 18 months and lotus reps had to fly in from England to consult but it got fixed. I believe it’s a salvage title now, which is a shame. But my understanding is that it doesn’t affect the value much. I forgot to mention it was my buddy’s first couple miles in the car after he rolled it off the shipping truck. Came to his first light and BAM!
Other than losing his job what can they go after him for? These old cars have such greasy old tires and it could have sputtered when the carb hit some clean gas.
Not really any personal liability, this is gonna get covered under the company policy. Hes likely fine other than whatever work punishment up to termination. Unless of course they can prove he rammed these on purpose...
3?! I thought this was low speed, what could have happened the the dude was fast enough to cause this much damage and 3 hospitalizations? Were thr 3 between the cars?
It cant be that low speed. At least 15-20 mph judging by the damage and force it appeared to have.

When you win a car you can find it in the garage and they let you start it and play around in it. All before it is completely paid for and finalized. This could be a big problem for the new owner and mecum. Could have been either driving it at this point in the sale and in a questionable state of ownership.
Owner of the jeep said after multiple delays, his car didn’t go across until very late in the night (around 7:30 - 8 PM).
There was very little people left in the crowd so he did not hit reserve.
The Mecum appointed driver then drove the car from the stage to the parking lot to store the car for “The Bid Goes On” and to simply close out the night and get cars put away.
That’s when the drivers foot allegedly slipped on to the accelerator and he panicked and shoved his foot down launching the vehicle in to the row of other vehicles.
The owner of the Jeep said he was standing back following the car and watched the entire thing go down in front of him.
"Hello Bob at (Insert insurance company) speaking, how can I help?...
I see, and were there any other vehicles involved?...
4? Ok, and can you tell me what the vehicles were?....
Uhuh.....
Uhuh....
Uhuh.....
Uhuh.....
And was anybody injured? Yes, ok, how badly?.....
Uhuh.....
Ok, please hold while I pass you onto our 'HOLY FUCKING SHIT HE FUCKING CRASHED INTO WHAT! OH FUCK YOUR SO SCREWED! OH FUCK WERE SO SCREWED!' Department."
Talked to a guy at an NSRA show. He wrecked the car he had out one day pulling out of his trailer. Had another to show on back up that was equally sick. He seemed to not give a fuck and said Haggery covers the damage easy. In this case its those people that are hurt that makes this troublesome.
This was at a casino, I wont say which one. A friend at the time started out at hotel reservations and then worked her way up sort to speak. She became something like a secretary to the top guy. He special ordered a Cadillac and waited months for it to arrive. It was parked in the parking lot. He told her she could move it, she hit one of the yellow pole barriers. They did marry not long after.
edit: Just wanted to add, this was on the first day of ownership. He had just picked it up that day.
I work in insurance and make the joke "its not like u hit a bunch of parked lamborghinis so this damage is minor in comparison" to anyone at fault and concerned to try and ease their mind.
No joke for this guy. He's screwed.
"you crashed a what into a what, into a what???? WHAT???? WHY?????"
...ANNNND a person! There's an injured person on the ground in several pics.
Might just be the driver after the vehicle's owners witnessed the incident.
Or the old owner after witnessing it
https://i.makeagif.com/media/6-17-2024/7Lfm1c.gif
There look to be multiple paramedics in the last picture. Probably helping tend to injured parties.
I figured it was just the guy who hit the cars having a heart attack.
Dudes hoping his life insurance pays it off so his family has something
Last photo, it looks like there's two people on the floor.
The driver and the guy who just bought the Corvette
By the looks on the 4th pic possibly 2 there is a guy bent over close to the car not looking
They should park less expensive cars between them as buffers.
I think they just used people instead - softer.
Oh please, that guy didn’t live to get to make an insurance claim
Uninsurable. The term is uninsurable.
Have you had any accidents in the last 3 years?
Bwahahajajaha. Hold on, you gotta tell my manager this before I hang up on you.
While I cannot speak for American insurance policies, most Australian third-party insurance policies begin at $20 million and can extend to $32 million.

as a lawyer in america, it's always a trip to hear about how other legal systems do it better than ours
Is that coverage? It can't be premium right?
third-party coverage sounds about right at $20 mill. in Aus.
Insurer wont pay a cent to your personal loses; but will with limitations cover damage caused to other parties.
lol, coverage.
premiums as always depend on your age and the car and where you live, but can be had pretty cheaply for a basic third party property damage policy .

Omgoodness. That sounds like a nightmare. I love driving manual, but it doesn’t seem like they make them anymore.
Emissions standards have killed them, for the most part. Some sports cars still have them, my 2019 Subaru is a manual. But they’re hard to find.
Why do you think it’s an emissions thing? They’re everywhere in Europe, most countries in which have stricter standards than the US. People just like saying "emissions" as a reason for every change in the auto industry since 1995
1970 is when emissions started to be put in cars. By 1977 cars were absolute dogs, no pickup whatsoever. Around 1986 they started to get more horsepower back. Now it's mileage that is what they are concerned about.

ever wonder why people tell you not to drive an automatic with two feet?

Upvote for calling them Lexi.
I worked insurance 25 years ago.
our record was a 20 year old in an old shitbox with a $500 third party property damage policy that ran into and wrote off a 1.2 million dollar Ferrari.
best 500 bucks that kid ever spent.
I thought for a second that the $500 was the coverage, not the premium lol. I was worried
That kid's insurance must not be cheap anymore.
it doesn't really work like that down here.
if you have multiple at fault accidents, you'll pay a higher premium for sure, but just one? it won't affect what you pay that much.
Fair enough. Whenever I've had to fill out insurance applications they've asked how much any previous claims might have paid out (at least some of the times) so i suspect it'd have a fairly hefty effect on quotes here.

Depending on the company/event, they wont even let you drive your own car into the show position. Specifically because of their own insurance.
Hagerty insurance is agreed value insurance, so we agree on the value of the car first.
Limited to 5,000 km/year
Still really cheap.

My man’s loss ratio is 4 digits
what is a loss ratio?
Looks like the auction house just bought a bunch of cars... :-)
And a bunch of lawyers and appraisers get a paid day fighting over prices.
The insurers auction
I know it was a joke but I think that would actually be the cheapest way to resolve this.
Expensive foot
Fired foot.
<owners son>
Ah.
Nevermind. 😂
“Before you can take over the family business, you must work in every department first.”
"Starting in the body shop."
Happy CakeDay!
Looks like someone got hurt, hopefully they are ok.
Yes. Three people were hospitalized. All around terrible accident.
Damn it! I was having fun reading all the snarky comments until I learned someone got hurt 🤕
3?! I thought this was low speed, what could have happened the the dude was fast enough to cause this much damage and 3 hospitalizations? Were thr 3 between the cars?
It cant be that low speed. At least 15-20 mph judging by the damage and force it appeared to have.
My assumption is he was doing about 10 mph and went to hit the brake and accidentally floored it instead. Im also assuming this person is above the age of 70 and his slow reaction time led to a larger increase in speed.
65 shouldn’t drive 😬
Getting squished between cars will hurt at any speed.
3 people hospitalized from heartbreak. Victims: the 3 car owners.
What? How? How fast was the driver going? This really looks like the kind of accident where nobody was hurt (much-less hospitalized)
You meant to say, ex-Mecum driver’s foot slipped
Incidentally fired just before the impact.
What's happening in the last photo? Did he get arrested lol?
Three people hospitalized.
Oh sorry. Hope they're ok.
His foot slipped a lot it seems
And quite continuously, I would say
How hard did he hit the cars that people had to be hospitalized?
They were likely not in the cars and just standing around them
From heart attacks cuz they just watched their babies get murdered I presume?
https://youtu.be/hvlN91slHg8?si=xMa1QwlZfHslqSMl
This guy just single-handedly raised everyone in the country’s insurance premiums
I hope the guy on the ground being attended to is going to be ok. I hope he was not between cars when it happened.
If that's his hat on the ground in the last pic, doesn't look great for him.
“Foot slipped” or “foot smashed the gas pedal and held it down so that 3 cars smashed into each other”?
Oh damn, that's gonna be one heck of a bill
CLARKSON!
HAMMOND YOU IDIOT YOU'VE CRASHED INTO THREE PARKED CARS!
YOU BLITHERING BUFFOON!
I had the exact face of the bald dude with glasses looking through the photos.
The wheels on that Willy's are a crime
Bandit ain't gonna like this.
Finally got that sumbitch!
Hagerty about to pay up.
Is that a 63 vette split window in pic 3?!
God I hope not.
Edit: Zooming in I can’t see a post running up the back window, so thankfully, no.
You can’t park there mate
I just got second-hand emotional damage.
Jetson, you're fired.
When you have to ask one of the worst questions possible: "What is the maximum I'm covered for?"
Don’t armor all the brake pedal……
I drove for mecum. It's literally unpaid job that car clubs run. Quite the scam but for us car guys it's a good day at "work"
feel bad for the Vette but there's nothing lost with the Jeep that hit it, Foose wheels are a scourge on humanity
I’m not a jeep guy either but you guys just shitting on specific cars for existing are the scourge on humanity you speak of.
Nah the jeep is cool, the rims are cheesy.
Oops
Didn’t something like this happen a year ago as well?
yeah , a ‘56(?) chevy fell off a two post hoist
Hopefully he already filed for unemployment….
Ah, the old 'foot slipped' cliché.
SOLD!!! To the gentleman with the slippery foot.
"Yall wanna see a dead body?"
Can't park there.
Bandits gonna be pissed
What are the qualifications and testing needed to become one of these drivers? Just asking, y'know, because they might have an opening...
Somebody just bought themself 4 cars.
Did the guy get hurt? The driver guy?
Or are they basically holding him down to rob him of every dollar he has to his name?
I think you probably meant "former driver"
Look at those wheels! That thing was at fault before the accident even started
When you win a car you can find it in the garage and they let you start it and play around in it. All before it is completely paid for and finalized. This could be a big problem for the new owner and mecum. Could have been either driving it at this point in the sale and in a questionable state of ownership.

🤣

I see, and were there any other vehicles involved?...
4? Ok, and can you tell me what the vehicles were?....
Uhuh.....
Uhuh....
Uhuh.....
Uhuh.....
And was anybody injured? Yes, ok, how badly?.....
Uhuh.....
Ok, please hold while I pass you onto our 'HOLY FUCKING SHIT HE FUCKING CRASHED INTO WHAT! OH FUCK YOUR SO SCREWED! OH FUCK WERE SO SCREWED!' Department."
When did this occur? Edit: Found it. It's from Dalton, GA in 2022
The incident occurred in Ft. Worth this weekend at a Mecum Auction.
Sucks to see that it’s happened more than once with this auction.
Right into that awesome giant sized hotwheel!
Oh fuck, not the Trans Am in there too 😭😭😭
“Mecum”? Who names their company “Mecum”? And how am I the first person asking this question?
Oof
Ouccchhhhhhh
Wonder what the end result was from all the damage. Did mecum cover it?
Happened this weekend must be too soon to tell
"Former" Mecum Auction Driver
Oh man what was that firebird going to go for?
Oh boy
Y'all need to be more careful where you stick your Willys.
This hurt to look at
The first guy in the third photo is legit giving a thousand yard stare.
You break it, you buy it.
I want to hear the sound people made when a car relic destroyed another car relic because of something as stupid as foot slipping.
Oops
It is sad that injuries happened. I hope they don't have any complications. I hope they recover well.
I know you’re worried, but that should (NOT!!) buff out just fine.
When did this happen? I'm not seeing it on any news sites.
Talked to a guy at an NSRA show. He wrecked the car he had out one day pulling out of his trailer. Had another to show on back up that was equally sick. He seemed to not give a fuck and said Haggery covers the damage easy. In this case its those people that are hurt that makes this troublesome.
Isn't this why they usually push the cars into the auction
How powerful was that jeep?!!! Or jeep like device. The hell is that thing
Then they announced them all sold after the first and only bid
That probably also sounded expensive.
“Oops.”
I'd pretend I had a stroke or something lol
Every time I watch their auctions the drivers are always super old guys
He’s working for free for the next 30 years…poor guy. I hope he’s ok. Looks like someone is getting med on the ground in a few pics.
Please tell me there is a video.
That's Lloyd's Of London kind of policy there...damn!
The hat there says a lot…
How does a foot slip end with it on the accelerator?
Anyone have any info on the wacky looking silver wagon behind the old Vette?
My jaw dropped 😭😭😭
That's a paddlin
I wonder if that’s the same Trans Am my grandfather and Burt Reynolds sold together a while back or if it’s a reproduction
The title is way funnier if you read it as Mr. Krabs.
Ohhhh that's gonna leave a mark. On that guy's soul too.
How fast was the driver going?!
This is, without a doubt, another Mecum moment
We just have to move on
Oh, dang! One mistake, four cars messed up.
Maybe the car wash is hiring?
"...and reserve is now OFF! Do I hear..."
C2 into a Firebird into a C7 ZR1?! DUUUUUDE
Don't worry, they'll resell all of them between two bidders and gavel the hammer to the other guy who didn't actually make a final bid.
